A multidimensional analysis of maternal separation impact: corticosteroids and oxytocin linkage
Dissertação de Mestrado em Psicologia ClínicaExposure to early life stress and emotional trauma appear to be critical for neurodevelopment, stress
responsiveness, lifetime health, and behavioral programming. Importantly, the severity of these effects seems to
be mediated by the glucocorticoid levels exposure and the specific development stage at which it occurs. Indeed,
in the last decades elegant longitudinal research with humans informed about the impact of early life experiences
on the adult general adaptation. However, the mechanisms underlying the stress programming are still unclear.
Animal models have been developed to experimentally investigate the neural substracts of early chronic stress
exposure. In the rat, maternal separation (MS) in early ages have been linked to endocrinal, neurochemical and
behavioral disruptions in the rat. The present thesis aimed to investigate the long-term imprinting effects of early
stress exposure into two developmental time windows (MS2-15, MS7-20), in terms of behavioral outcomes: spatial
memory performance, anxiety behaviors, learn helplessness behavior and social behavior. Moreover, in order to
clarify the cross-talk between corsticosteroid and oxytocinergic systems as possible mechanism underlying the
proposed behavioral outcomes, we separately evaluated the long-term consequences of early life maternal
separation in corticosteroid and oxytocinergic pathways.
Independently of the temporal windows in which the stressor occurred, MS rats showed increased adrenal
glands and body’s weight, which may reflect a disruption of the HPA axis, as corroborated by the higher levels of
corticosteroids plasma found in the same animals. Behaviorally, MS2-15 rats presented depressive-like behaviors
and, indepently of the brain maturity, both MS groups showed hyperanxious behavior in the elevated plus maze
test. Finally, early adverse experiences showed to influence the mRNA OT-r expression in specific brain areas
linked to HPA axis regulation and to several cognitive- and social-emotional processes.
These findings could reflect the time-dependent imprinting effect of adverse experiences in childhood, since the
impact of corticosteroids in the maturation of specific neuronal substract of behavior and neuroendocrine
phenotypes were demonstrated.
No rato, a separação materna (MS)
específicas do cérebro associadas à regulação do eixo HPA e a vários processos cognitivos e sócio-emocionais.
Psychosocial adjustment and physical health in children of divorce
Objective: To review the literature on the effects of parental divorce over the psychological maladjustment and physical health problems in children of divorced parents, thus contributing to the integration of existing scientific knowledge based on the biopsychosocial model of the impact of divorce on children’s physical health as proposed by Troxel and Matthews (2004). Sources: Review of the literature using MEDLINE and PsycInfo (1980-2007) databases, selecting the most representative articles on the subject. Special attention was paid to contributions by internationally renowned investigators on the subject. Summary of the findings: Divorce may be responsible for a decline of physical and psychological health in children. The developmental maladjustment of children is not triggered by divorce itself, but rather by other risk factors associated with it, such as interparental conflict, parental psychopathology, decline in socio-economic level, inconsistency in parenting styles, a parallel and conflicting co-parenting relationship between parents and low levels of social support. Such risk factors trigger maladjusted developmental pathways, marked by psychopathological symptoms, poor academic performance, worst levels of physical health, risk behavior, exacerbated psychophysiological responses to stress and weakening of the immune system. Conclusions: Clear links were observed between experiencing parental divorce and facing problems of physical and psychological maladjustment in children. Divorce is a stressor that should be considered by health professionals as potentially responsible for maladjusted neuropsychobiological responses and for decline in children’s physical health. The authors are thankful to Patrícia Silva, biologist and PhD student in Clinical Psychology in the Neuropsychophysiology Laboratory of the School of Psychology at Universidade do Minho, for the orthographic adaptation of the original article to Brazilian Portuguese

The baby care scale: a psychometric study with fathers during pregnancy and the postpartum period
The Baby Care Scale (BCS) was designed to assess the involvement of father in infant care during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This study aimed to examine the psychometric characteristics of the BCS - antenatal (BCS-AN) and BCS - postnatal (BCS-PN) versions. A sample of 100 primiparous fathers completed the BCS-AN and/or the BCS-PN and self-reported the measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms and of father-infant emotional involvement during pregnancy and the postpartum period, respectively. Good internal consistency was found for both the BCS-AN and the BCS-PN. A two-factor model was found for both versions of the instrument: (1) household tasks and (2) infant care tasks. The BCS-AN and BCS-PN subscales revealed good internal consistency. Higher scores on the BCS-AN predicted higher scores on the BCS-PN. Significant associations were found among the BCS (BCS-AN and BCS-PN), depressive and anxiety symptoms, and father-infant emotional involvement, revealing good criterion validity. This study suggested that both the BCS-AN and the BCS-PN are reliable multidimensional self-report measures that assess the involvement of father in infant care during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This study was conducted at the Psychology Research Centre (PSI/01662), School of Psychology, University of Minho, and supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the Portuguese State Budget (UIDB/PSI/01662/2020)
Processos biológicos na paternidade: estado de arte
This review of the state of art aimed to present the most recent data on neuronal, neurochemical, hormonal
and genetic bases of paternal care using MEDLINE and PsycInfo databases (1970-2013). An
integrated model of biological substrates that assist men in the transition to fatherhood is presented.
Guided by a genetic background, hypothalamic-midbrain-limbic-paralimbic-cortical circuits were
found to be activated in fathers when infant stimuli are presented. A set of specifi c neuropeptides and
steroid hormones are produced and seem to be related to brain activation, potentiating the paternal
phenotype. Together, genetic, brain and hormonal processes suggest the existence of biological bases
of paternal care in humans, activated and enhanced by infant stimuli and responsive to variations in
the father-infant relationship.
This investigation is granted by

Productive experience and specialization opportunities for Portugal : an empirical assessment
Following Hidalgo et al. (Sci Mag 317: 482–487, 2007), we use the structure of international trade to estimate a measure of “revealed relatedness” for each pair of internationally traded products, which intends to capture similarities in terms of the endowments or capabilities they use in production. Our method departs from the original one, in that we run statistical tests of equality in probabilities, instead of computing conditional probabilities. We estimate a matrix of “Revealed Relatedness Indexes” using
2005 data and we then investigate which “upscale” products in which Portugal didn’t develop comparative advantage are more related to products in which the country is currently specialized. The analysis suggests that more than 60 % of Portugal’s “upscale opportunities” lie in non-traditional sectors, such as “machinery” and “chemicals”.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Novel coding genetic variants of the GBP1 gene in wild and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa)
The interferon-induced guanylate-binding protein 1 gene (GBP1) plays an important role in host defense against viral, bacterial and protozoan infections. To explore novel genetic variants in this gene, we re-sequenced a 587-bp fragment spanning the exon 2 of the GBP1 gene in a sample panel consisting of 34 wild boars and 59 local domestic pigs from three geographic regions (China, Iberian Peninsula, and Central Europe) and 12 individuals of three commercial breeds (Pietrain, Landrace, and Large White). In a final 543-bp sequence fragment, there were 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), of which five were coding (three novel mutations).
A total of 19 haplotypes were reconstructed and most haplotypes were shared by two or more sample groups. Those shared haplotypes revealed a clear signature of genetic introgression from Chinese domestic pigs into European domestic pigs. In addition, there were six haplotypes with frequencies below 1%, but none of them were present in the three commercial breeds (Pietrain, Landrace, and Large White). Although a limited number of individuals and breeds were analyzed, the absence of rare alleles (or haplotypes) in the commercial breeds is an indication that a significant proportion of genetic diversity in domestic species is not present in commercial breeds. This study demonstrated the potential to find sufficient genetic variation for population genetic analyses of demography versus selection, in functional candidate genes of domestic pigs and wild boars worldwide
As energias renováveis aliadas à construção sustentável
suprir as necessidades climáticas durante o Inverno.
ABSTRACT: The fundamental aim of this paper is to expand the knowledge of the
energetic technologies, management and sustainable development in
order to rationalize and make an efficient use of energy in buildings.
Recent regulation in the thermal performance of buildings gave great
importance to the integration and use of renewable energy systems that,
could improve the quality of life in the buildings through a more rational use
of energy.
In this context, in a first phase, a thermal behaviour analysis of a building
was made, in three Portuguese regions with different climatic
characteristics to allow understanding the main differences related to the
regulation in force demands with the energetic consumption disparity in
these regions. When these differences were detected, considerable
reductions on the energy spent to climate the building, were made possible
by altering the building characteristics specially the opaque enclosure of
the building and the glass spans.
Another important theme, refers to the problematic of sustainability in the
fields of energy, consumption and renewable sources: in a first phase,
energy sources that can be applied in the building sector were described
On a second phase, the different renewable energy sources were studied
in order to make the building produce all the energy needed to supply itself.
Finally, an economic viability study was made, regarding the different
hypothesis considered to check if the proposed changes are profitable or
not.
The conclusion is that the same building has different behaviours
according to the climatic region surrounding it. So, the building in Bragança
needs a higher energy output to supply its climatic needs during winter. On
summer, because the weather is hotter, the building located in Beja shows
higher cooling needs.
The proposed changes on thermal behaviour are clearly profitable, not only
for the quality of life but also economically since after short time the
investment is completely amortized.
However, in terms of using renewable energy sources, the investment is
just amortized almost by the end of the useful life of said equipment.
Economically speaking it is not, by now, a rentable solution. However, in
environmental terms this is, for sure, the best option
