Quantifying electronic correlation strength in a complex oxide: a combined DMFT and ARPES study of LaNiO
The electronic correlation strength is a basic quantity that characterizes
the physical properties of materials such as transition metal oxides.
Determining correlation strengths requires both precise definitions and a
careful comparison between experiment and theory. In this paper we define the
correlation strength via the magnitude of the electron self-energy near the
Fermi level. For the case of LaNiO, we obtain both the experimental and
theoretical mass enhancements by considering high resolution
angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density
functional + dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) calculations. We use
valence-band photoemission data to constrain the free parameters in the theory,
and demonstrate a quantitative agreement between the experiment and theory when
both the realistic crystal structure and strong electronic correlations are
taken into account. These results provide a benchmark for the accuracy of the
DFT+DMFT theoretical approach, and can serve as a test case when considering
other complex materials. By establishing the level of accuracy of the theory,
this work also will enable better quantitative predictions when engineering new
emergent properties in nickelate heterostructures.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Mobile target tracking using a reconfigurable low earth orbit constellation
Traditional Earth-observing satellite constellations must preselect orbits to match established mission objectives, inherently limiting the capability of the system to respond to dynamic events. A more flexible approach to constellation design which maneuvers satellites to new orbits throughout the mission lifetime can enable the tracking of mobile targets; such a concept will be explored and evaluated in the following paper. Currently, an existing approach for creating a reconfigurable constellation of satellites (ReCon) demonstrates some increased functionality. However, the repeating ground track (RGT) orbits used are only well-suited for static ground targets (i.e. particular latitude and longitude points) as they are defined by their repetitious passes over the particular points on the globe; inherently these orbits are not ideal for tracking mobile targets such as ships, oil spills, hurricanes, and other weather events. By addressing this gap and designing the constellation to follow these mobile targets, data return can be of higher quality and quantity leading toward improved predictions of future movements. Traditional non-maneuverable satellites may of course capture mobile feature data; however, the quality and quantity of data returned is driven by the satellites’ orbits which were not designed for the particular mobile target. A proposed concept of operations that models possible sequential satellite maneuvers as a graph has shown promise for tracking mobile targets in the case of a single satellite. In the following paper, this concept is further explored by the addition of an optimizer to this method, applied to both a single satellite and a constellation of maneuverable satellites, like ReCon. Results for a tropical storm case study indicate that with relatively low amounts of delta-V per satellite, many possible maneuver combinations are found which result in improved accesses with greater total access time and closer passes. Trade-offs are shown between total target access time, mean distance to targets upon access, and total delta-V used. The performance of increased constellation size is also explored. By having satellites dynamically respond to mobile targets such as hurricanes, satellite imagery and remote sensing can be of better quality and even contribute to better predictions for developing storms
Critical sets of nonlinear Sturm-Liouville operators of Ambrosetti-Prodi type
The critical set C of the operator F:H^2_D([0,pi]) -> L^2([0,pi]) defined by
F(u)=-u''+f(u) is studied. Here X:=H^2_D([0,pi]) stands for the set of
functions that satisfy the Dirichlet boundary conditions and whose derivatives
are in L^2([0,pi]). For generic nonlinearities f, C=\cup C_k decomposes into
manifolds of codimension 1 in X. If f''0, the set C_j is shown to be
non-empty if, and only if, -j^2 (the j-th eigenvalue of u -> u'') is in the

Einfluss von Dauerkulturen auf die strukturelle und funktionelle Vielfalt von Bodenorganismengemeinschaften
In der Region Trier – Saarland – Luxemburg wurden an jeweils 5 verschiedenen Praxis-Standorten Landnutzungsgradienten von einjährigen Kulturen (Mais), Dauerkulturen der zweiten Generation (2G) und permanentes Grünland vergleichend untersucht. Bei den Dauerkulturen handelte es sich um die Kulturen Durchwachsende Silphie, Szarvasi, Igniscum und Miscanthus. Ziel der Arbeiten war es, den Einfluss eines prognostizierten Landnutzungswandels in Richtung Dauerkulturen auf Bodenorganismen und ihre Funktionen im Boden in Abhängigkeit von Standortseigenschaften aufzuzeigen und anhand des Vergleiches mit einjährigen Kulturen sowie Grünland zu beurteilen. Als Vergleichsparameter wurden neben wichtigen Standortseigenschaften dominante Bodenbakterien-Phyla mittels qPCR, funktionelle Gene aus dem N-Kreislauf (amoA, nifH) (ebenfalls mittels qPCR) sowie Artenbesatz, Abundanz, Biomasse und funktionelle Gruppen von Regenwürmern untersucht.
Wir können zeigen, dass Dauerkulturen im Mittel eine Zwischenstellung zwischen einjährigen Kulturen (Mais) und Grünland einnehmen. Allerdings waren die Ergebnisse der Lumbriciden-Untersuchungen eindeutiger, als die der Bakteriengemeinschaften, was v.a. auf die Variabilität der Gehalte und Qualität der OBS bei den verschiedenen Kulturen und an den verschiedenen Standorten zurückgeführt werden muss
Effects of oxidized low density lipoprotein, lipid mediators and statins on vascular cell interactions
The integrin heterodimer CD11b/CD18 (alpha M beta 2, Mac-1, CR3) expressed on monocytes or polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) is a receptor for iC3b, fibrinogen, heparin, and for intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 on endothelium, crucially contributing to vascular cell interactions in inflammation and atherosclerosis. In this report, we summarize our findings on the effects of lipid mediators and lipid-lowering drugs. Exposure of endothelial cells to oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) induces upregulation of ICAM-1 and increases adhesion of monocytic cells expressing Mac-1. Inhibition experiments show that monocytes use distinct ligands, i.e. ICAM-1 and heparan sulfate proteoglycans for adhesion to oxLDL-treated endothelium. An albumin-transferable oxLDL activity is inhibited by the antioxidant pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), while 8-epi-prostaglandin F2 alpha (8-epi-PGF2 alpha) or lysophosphatidylcholine had no effect, implicating yet unidentified radicals. Sequential adhesive! and signaling events lead to the firm adhesion of rolling PMN on activated and adherent platelets, which may occupy areas of endothelial denudation. Shear resistant arrest of PMN on thrombin-stimulated platelets in flow conditions requires distinct regions of Mac-1, involving its interactions with fibrinogen bound to platelet alpha llb beta 3, and with other platelet ligands. Both arrest and adhesion strengthening under flow are stimulated by platelet-activating factor and leukotriene B4, but not by the chemokine receptor CXCR2. We tested whether Mac-1-dependent monocyte adhesiveness is affected by inhibitors of hydroxy-methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A reductase (statins) which improve morbidity and survival of patients with coronary heart disease. As compared to controls, adhesion of isolated monocytes to endothelium ex vivo was increased in patients with hypercholesterolemia. Treatment with statins decreased total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol plasma levels, surface expression of Mac-1, and resulted in a dramatic reduction of Mac,mediated monocyte adhesion to endothelium. The inhibition of monocyte adhesion was reversed by mevalonate but not LDL in vitro,indicating that isoprenoid precursors are crucial for adhesiveness of Mac-1. Such effects may crucially contribute to the clinical benefit of statins, independent of cholesterol-lowering, and may represent a paradigm for novel, anti-inflammatory mechanisms of action by this class of drugs
Exact Boundary Critical Exponents and Tunneling Effect in Integrable Models for Quantum Wires
Using the principles of the conformal quantum field theory and the finite
size corrections of the energy of the ground and various excited states, we
calculate the boundary critical exponents of single- and multicomponent Bethe
ansatz soluble models. The boundary critical exponents are given in terms of
the dressed charge matrix which has the same form as that of systems with
periodic boundary conditions and is uniquely determined by the Bethe ansatz
equations. A Luttinger liquid with open boundaries is the effective low-energy
theory of these models. As applications of the theory, the Friedel oscillations
due to the boundaries and the tunneling conductance through a barrier are also
calculated. The tunneling conductance is determined by a nonuniversal boundary
exponent which governs its power law dependence on temperature and frequency.Comment: REVTEX, submitted to PR
Improved limits on nuebar emission from mu+ decay
We investigated mu+ decays at rest produced at the ISIS beam stop target.
Lepton flavor (LF) conservation has been tested by searching for \nueb via the
detection reaction p(\nueb,e+)n. No \nueb signal from LF violating mu+ decays
was identified. We extract upper limits of the branching ratio for the LF
violating decay mu+ -> e+ \nueb \nu compared to the Standard Model (SM) mu+ ->
e+ nue numub decay: BR < 0.9(1.7)x10^{-3} (90%CL) depending on the spectral
distribution of \nueb characterized by the Michel parameter rho=0.75 (0.0).
These results improve earlier limits by one order of magnitude and restrict
extensions of the SM in which \nueb emission from mu+ decay is allowed with
considerable strength. The decay \mupdeb as source for the \nueb signal

Mycolactone-dependent depletion of endothelial cell thrombomodulin is strongly associated with fibrin deposition in Buruli ulcer lesions
A well-known histopathological feature of diseased skin in Buruli ulcer (BU) is coagulative necrosis caused by the Mycobacterium ulcerans macrolide exotoxin mycolactone. Since the underlying mechanism is not known, we have investigated the effect of mycolactone on endothelial cells, focussing on the expression of surface anticoagulant molecules involved in the protein C anticoagulant pathway. Congenital deficiencies in this natural anticoagulant pathway are known to induce thrombotic complications such as purpura fulimans and spontaneous necrosis. Mycolactone profoundly decreased thrombomodulin (TM) expression on the surface of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMVEC) at doses as low as 2ng/ml and as early as 8hrs after exposure. TM activates protein C by altering thrombin's substrate specificity, and exposure of HDMVEC to mycolactone for 24 hours resulted in an almost complete loss of the cells' ability to produce activated protein C. Loss of TM was shown to be due to a previously described mechanism involving mycolactone-dependent blockade of Sec61 translocation that results in proteasome-dependent degradation of newly synthesised ER-transiting proteins. Indeed, depletion from cells determined by live-cell imaging of cells stably expressing a recombinant TM-GFP fusion protein occurred at the known turnover rate. In order to determine the relevance of these findings to BU disease, immunohistochemistry of punch biopsies from 40 BU lesions (31 ulcers, nine plaques) was performed. TM abundance was profoundly reduced in the subcutis of 78% of biopsies. Furthermore, it was confirmed that fibrin deposition is a common feature of BU lesions, particularly in the necrotic areas. These findings indicate that there is decreased ability to control thrombin generation in BU skin. Mycolactone's effects on normal endothelial cell function, including its ability to activate the protein C anticoagulant pathway are strongly associated with this. Fibrin-driven tisischemia could contribute to the development of the tissue necrosis seen in BU lesions
Fluctuating heat stress during development exposes reproductive costs and putative benefits
Temperature and thermal variability are increasing worldwide, with well-known survival consequences. However, effects on other potentially more thermally sensitive reproductive traits are less understood, especially when considering thermal variation. Studying the consequences of male reproduction in the context of climate warming and ability to adapt is becoming increasingly relevant.
Our goals were to test how exposure to different average temperatures that either fluctuated or remained constant impacts different male reproductive performance traits and to assess adaptive potential to future heat stress.
We took advantage of a set of Drosophila melanogaster isogenic lines of different genotypes, exposing them to four different thermal conditions. These conditions represented a benign and a stressful mean temperature, applied either constantly or fluctuating around the mean and experienced during development when heat stress avoidance is hindered because of restricted mobility. We measured subsequent male reproductive performance for mating success, fertility, number of offspring produced and offspring sex ratio, and calculated the influence of thermal stress on estimated heritability and evolvability of these reproductive traits.
Both costs and benefits to different thermal conditions on reproductive performance were found, with some responses varying between genotypes. Mating success improved under fluctuating benign temperature conditions and declined as temperature stress increased regardless of genotype. Fertility and productivity were severely reduced at fluctuating mean high temperature for all genotypes, but some genotypes were unaffected at constant high mean temperature. These more thermally robust genotypes showed a slight increase in productivity under the fluctuating benign condition compared to constant high temperature, despite both thermal conditions sharing the same temperature for 6 hr daily. Increasing thermal stress resulted in higher heritability and evolvability.
Overall, the effects of temperature on reproductive performance depended on the trait and genotype; performance of some traits slightly increased when high temperatures were experienced for short periods but decreased substantially even when experiencing a benign temperature for a portion of each day. While thermal stress increased genetic variation that could provide adaptive potential against climate warming, this is unlikely to compensate for the overall severe negative effect on reproductive performance as mean temperature and variance increase.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
