This text aims to contrast the metaphysical beginnings of the philosophies of Hegel and Kierkegaard. For this task, the notion of Being Pure of the Hegel of Logic will be used in relation with the concept of Irony that Kierkegaard expresses in his Concept of irony. The need for this "contrast of beginnings" seeks to clarify, from a “metaphysical awakening”, the evident theoretical courtship that has so far distanced by the dominant historiographical traditions of continental philosoph

    Get PDF
Nalmefene is the first pharmacological therapy approved in the EU to reduce alcohol consumption in alcohol-dependent subjects with a high drinking risk level in the context of a motivational approach. Nalmefene significantly reduced both the number of heavy drinking days and total alcohol consumption in alcohol-dependent patients. Also, this compound is generally well tolerated. This type of intervention has the potential to engage more patients in treatment, and also implies the implementation of the paradigm based on harm reduction

All-optical nonequilibrium pathway to stabilizing magnetic Weyl semimetals in pyrochlore iridates

Nonequilibrium many-body dynamics is becoming one of the central topics of modern condensed matter physics. Floquet topological states were suggested to emerge in photodressed band structures in the presence of periodic laser driving. Here we propose a viable nonequilibrium route without requiring coherent Floquet states to reach the elusive magnetic Weyl semimetallic phase in pyrochlore iridates by ultrafast modification of the effective electron-electron interaction with short laser pulses. Combining \textit{ab initio} calculations for a time-dependent self-consistent reduced Hubbard UU controlled by laser intensity and nonequilibrium magnetism simulations for quantum quenches, we find dynamically modified magnetic order giving rise to transiently emerging Weyl cones that are probed by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our work offers a unique and realistic pathway for nonequilibrium materials engineering beyond Floquet physics to create and sustain Weyl semimetals. This may lead to ultrafast, tens-of-femtoseconds switching protocols for light-engineered Berry curvature in combination with ultrafast magnetism.Comment: 27 pages including methods and supplementary information, 4 figures, 4 supplementary figure

On the electronic structure of silicene on Ag substrate: strong hybridization effects

    Get PDF
The electronic structure of the recently synthesised (3x3) reconstructed silicene on (4x4) Ag(111) is investigated by first-principles calculations. New states emerge due to the strong hybridization between silicene and Ag. Analyzing the nature and composition of these hybridized states, we show that i) it is possible to clearly distinguish them from states coming from the Dirac cone of free-standing silicene or from the sp-bands of bulk Ag and ii) assign their contribution to the description of the linearly dispersing band observed in photoemission. Furthermore, we show that silicene atoms contribute to the Fermi level, which leads to similar STM patterns as observed below or above the Fermi level. Our findings are crucial for the proper interpretation of experimental observations.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures including supplementary materia

    A-Set Process Improvement

Siemens Energy offers world-class products and solutions for power generation. They help their clients worldwide to successfully operate conventional power plants by renting out their toolkits. Clients can work on anything from gas or steam turbines, generators, turbines, or even hybrid power and storage. One of Siemens’ more profitable toolkits would be the A-Set, or as the floor assemblers refer to as ‘the majors,’ which consists of two large conex containers filled with thousands of tools ready for any type of operation at power plants. By looking at how long it takes floor assemblers at the Siemens Facility in Suwanee, GA to unload, degut, perform inventory, etc. on A-Sets coming in from use, our teams goal is to optimize the process and cut down on time to reduce the turnover rate. From time studies performed at the facility, the collection of logbooks kept since early 2016, and interviews taken from leads in involved departments, it was found that the average turnover rate of an A-Set is roughly 12 days, from start to finish. Given the processes involved with ensuring that the A-Set is ready to be “white -tagged” or ready to be sent out again to a new client, our team used tools such as Arena ® Simulation Software, DMAIC, statistical analysis, and process mapping to assess the system to be able to cut down on time. Through the analysis of the data and simulations run from Arena ®, the Mechanical Jack process was found to be the bottleneck in which the entire process would be waiting on. Following the acknowledgement of the bottleneck, the implementation of a solution involving an additional floor assembler and a priority system set to allow the Mechanical Jack process to begin faster, we were able to reduce the turnover time from 12 days to 8.55 days, while also increasing the revenue flow by increasing the amount of A-Sets Siemens could theoretically turn out in the same period of time with the reduction in time per turnover. With the turnover time being reduced, it is important to note that while in our calculations we accounted for additional A-Sets being turned out, that the Siemens facility in Suwanee could use the extra time shaved off per cycle in whatever which way they prefer. Initial recommendations would be to use the extra time to turnover more A-Sets, but another option could be to cross train their workers to circumvent any other slow processes that they may come up against through the reallocation of their workers from process to process as their priority levels increase. Regardless of what the facility decides to do with the reduction of turnover time, our team was successful in our endeavors and the following report will delve into what each process consisted of, as well as the direction our team chose to assess the system and give a formal recommendation to Siemens Energy

Midterm Results of an Anatomical Radial Head Arthroplasty for Treating Fractures and Degenerative Joint Diseases of the Radial Head

Background: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is typically performed to restore elbow stability or function in patients with fractures or degenerative joint diseases. The procedure requires a specific operating technique to avoid complications such as overstuffing, capitellar erosion, stiffness, instability, micro motion, and loosening. It is difficult to restore native radial head function reliably. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 45 patients who underwent radial head arthroplasty using the ALIGN radial head implant (ALIGN Radial Head System, Skeletal Dynamics, Miami, FL) at our institution. A total of 15 patients met inclusion criteria and were contacted to complete a QuickDASH questionnaire, with additional questions on range of motion, strength, stability, pain, and satisfaction. The monoblock ALIGN implant has a long, press-fit stem coated in titanium plasma spray (TPS), is comprised of cobalt chrome, and is anatomically aligned by the provided alignment jig. Results: Of the 15 patients, one reported severe loss of motion. No patient reported severe loss of strength, loss of stability, or pain. The average QuickDASH score was 12.62 (SD, 18.06) of 100, and the average patient satisfaction score was 8.80 (SD, 2.18) of 10. Conclusions: Radial head arthroplasty may result in suboptimal performance. Functional outcomes after using this implant with monoblock design have been favorable. The design may accurately replicate the anatomical function of the native radial head, and the long, TPS-coated press-fit stem may provide more stability and osseous integration than other implants. The results of this study indicated satisfactory midterm results after use of the ALIGN implant in radial head arthroplasty

NGC 6309, a Planetary Nebula that Shifted from Round to Multipolar

We present new narrow-band Ha, [N II], and [O III] high-resolution images of the quadrupolar planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6309 that show in great detail its bipolar lobes and reveal new morphological features. New high- and low-dispersion long-slit spectra have been obtained to help in the investigation of the new nebular components. The images and spectra unveil two diffuse blobs, one of them located at 55 arcsec from the central star along the NE direction (PA= +71) and the other at 78 arcsec in the SW direction (PA= -151). Therefore, these structures do not share the symmetry axes of the inner bipolar outflows. Their radial velocities relative to the system are quite low: +3 and -4 km/s, respectively. Spectroscopic data confirm a high [O III] to Ha ratio, indicating that the blobs are being excited by the UV flux from the central star. Our images convincingly show a spherical halo 60 arcsec in diameter encircling the quadrupolar nebula. The expansion velocity of this shell is low, 66 km/s. The software SHAPE has been used to construct a morpho-kinematic model for the ring and the bipolar flows that implies an age of 4,000 yrs, the expansion of the halo sets a lower limit for its age 46,000 yrs, and the very low expansion of the blobs suggests they are part of a large structure corresponding to a mass ejection that took place 150,000 yrs ago. In NGC 6309 we have direct evidence of a change in the geometry of mass-loss, from spherical in the halo to axially-symmetric in the two pairs of bipolar lobes.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA

The creation of more sustainable energy generation and management systems remains a priority at both European and international levels, as shown by projects such as Horizon Europe, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the initiatives of the International Energy Agency (IEA). While renewable energies hold a key role in this energy transition, other complementary techniques are also being developed to compensate for some of their disadvantages, such as intermitent supply or the decoupling of energy generation and consumption. Thus, energy storage becomes indispensable, including Thermal Energy Storage (TES). Thermal energy storage by means of Phase Change Materials (PCM) is particularly receiving a great deal of atention from the scientific community due to its great potential and versatility. The present Thesis covers the main experimental methodologies employed in the study and creation of PCMs, including experimental results to support their validity.

    Get PDF

This paper compares the concepts of “spirit” and “dialectic” in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and Kierkegaard’s The Sickness unto Death respectively. For this purpose, I delve into the way in which both philosophers understand these two concepts. The aim of this comparison is to detect whether there is some kind of relationship between the two concepts that could bring Hegel and Kierkegaard closer to each other
