Pseudorandomness for Regular Branching Programs via Fourier Analysis

We present an explicit pseudorandom generator for oblivious, read-once, permutation branching programs of constant width that can read their input bits in any order. The seed length is O(log2n)O(\log^2 n), where nn is the length of the branching program. The previous best seed length known for this model was n1/2+o(1)n^{1/2+o(1)}, which follows as a special case of a generator due to Impagliazzo, Meka, and Zuckerman (FOCS 2012) (which gives a seed length of s1/2+o(1)s^{1/2+o(1)} for arbitrary branching programs of size ss). Our techniques also give seed length n1/2+o(1)n^{1/2+o(1)} for general oblivious, read-once branching programs of width 2no(1)2^{n^{o(1)}}, which is incomparable to the results of Impagliazzo et al.Our pseudorandom generator is similar to the one used by Gopalan et al. (FOCS 2012) for read-once CNFs, but the analysis is quite different; ours is based on Fourier analysis of branching programs. In particular, we show that an oblivious, read-once, regular branching program of width ww has Fourier mass at most (2w2)k(2w^2)^k at level kk, independent of the length of the program.Comment: RANDOM 201

Self-Focused Electron Beams Produced by Pyroelecric Crystals on Heating or Cooling in Dilute Gases

Self-focusing, spatially stable, electron beams arising from heating up to 160 degrees C and cooling to room temperature pyroelectric LiNbO3 crystals in dilute gases have been observed for the first time. The current (up to nanoamperes) and energies (up to 170 keV) of these electron beams attained maximum values and then decreased during the cooling phase of the thermal cycle. Cylindrical crystals produced spatially stable beams with typical focal lengths of 22 mm and 1mm spot sizes. Here we present photographic as well as electronic proof of their existence.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, pd

Diffractive Guiding of Waves by a Periodic Array of Slits

We show that in order to guide waves, it is sufficient to periodically truncate their edges. The modes supported by this type of wave guide propagate freely between the slits, and the propagation pattern repeats itself. We experimentally demonstrate this general wave phenomenon for two types of waves: (i) plasmonic waves propagating on a metal-air interface that are periodically blocked by nanometric metallic walls, and (ii) surface gravity water waves whose evolution is recorded, the packet is truncated, and generated again to show repeated patterns. This guiding concept is applicable for a wide variety of waves.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Affinity chromatography in dynamic combinatorial libraries: one-pot amplification and isolation of a strongly binding receptor

    Get PDF
We report the one-pot amplification and isolation of a nanomolar receptor in a multibuilding block aqueous dynamic combinatorial library using a polymer-bound template. By appropriate choice of a poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-based support, unselective ion-exchange type behaviour between the oppositely charged cationic guest and polyanionic hosts was overcome, such that the selective molecular recognition arising in aqueous solution reactions is manifest also in the analogous templated solid phase DCL syntheses. The ability of a polymer bound template to identify and isolate a synthetic receptor via dynamic combinatorial chemistry was not compromised by the large size of the library, consisting of well over 140 theoretical members, demonstrating the practical advantages of a polymer-supported DCL methodology
