    The researchers at the Langley Research Center Flight Simulation Computing System are provided with an advanced real-time digital simulation capability. This capability is controlled at the user interface level by the Real Time Simulation Supervisor. The Supervisor is a group of subprograms loaded with a simulation application program. The Supervisor provides the interface between the application program and the operating system, and coordinates input and output to and from the simulation hardware. The Supervisor also performs various utility functions as required by a simulation application program

    Weight optimization of an aerobrake structural concept for a lunar transfer vehicle

    An aerobrake structural concept for a lunar transfer vehicle was weight optimized through the use of the Taguchi design method, finite element analyses, and element sizing routines. Six design parameters were chosen to represent the aerobrake structural configuration. The design parameters included honeycomb core thickness, diameter-depth ratio, shape, material, number of concentric ring frames, and number of radial frames. Each parameter was assigned three levels. The aerobrake structural configuration with the minimum weight was 44 percent less than the average weight of all the remaining satisfactory experimental configurations. In addition, the results of this study have served to bolster the advocacy of the Taguchi method for aerospace vehicle design. Both reduced analysis time and an optimized design demonstrated the applicability of the Taguchi method to aerospace vehicle design

    Limitations in cooling electrons by normal metal - superconductor tunnel junctions

    We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally two limiting factors in cooling electrons using biased tunnel junctions to extract heat from a normal metal into a superconductor. Firstly, when the injection rate of electrons exceeds the internal relaxation rate in the metal to be cooled, the electrons do no more obey the Fermi-Dirac distribution, and the concept of temperature cannot be applied as such. Secondly, at low bath temperatures, states within the gap induce anomalous heating and yield a theoretical limit of the achievable minimum temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, added Ref.     Classification of fresh edible oils using a coated piezoelectric sensor array-based electronic nose with soft computing approach for pattern recognition

    An electronic nose based on an array of six bulk acoustic wave polymer-coated piezoelectric quartz (PZQ) sensors with soft computing-based pattern recognition was used for the classi-fication of edible oils. The electronic nose was presented with 346 samples of fresh edible oil headspace volatiles, generated at 45°C. Extra virgin olive (EVO), nonvirgin olive oil (NVO) and sunflower oil (SFO) were used over a period of 30 days. The sensor responses were visualized by plotting the results from principal component analysis (PCA). Classification of edible oils was carried out using fuzzy c-means as well as radial basis function (RBF) neural networks both from a raw data and data after having been preprocessed by fuzzy c-means. The fuzzy c-means results were poor (74%) due to the different cluster sizes. The result of RBF with fuzzy c-means preprocessing was 95% and 99% for raw data input. RBF networks with fuzzy c-means preprocessing provide the advantage of a simple architecture that is quicker to train.</p

    XMM-Newton observations of HESS J1813-178 reveal a composite Supernova remnant

    We present X-ray and 12CO(J=1-0) observations of the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source HESS J1813-178 with the aim of understanding the origin of the gamma-ray emission. Using this dataset we are able to undertake spectral and morphological studies of the X-ray emission from this object with greater precision than previous studies. NANTEN 12CO(J=1-0) data are used to search for correlations of the gamma-ray emission with molecular clouds which could act as target material for gamma-ray production in a hadronic scenario. The NANTEN 12CO(J=1-0) observations show a giant molecular cloud of mass 2.5 10^5 M_{\sun} at a distance of 4 kpc in the vicinity of HESS J1813-178. Even though there is no direct positional coincidence, this giant cloud might have influenced the evolution of the gamma-ray source and its surroundings. The X-ray data show a highly absorbed non-thermal X-ray emitting object coincident with the previously known ASCA source AX J1813-178 showing a compact core and an extended tail towards the north-east, located in the centre of the radio shell-type Supernova remnant (SNR) G12.82-0.2. This central object shows morphological and spectral resemblance to a Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) and we therefore consider that the object is very likely to be a composite SNR. We discuss the scenario in which the gamma-rays originate in the shell of the SNR and the one in which they originate in the central object. We demonstrate, that in order to connect the core X-ray emission to the VHE gamma-ray emission electrons have to be accelerated to energies of at least 1 PeV.Comment: Submitted to A&

    Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

    We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance Δρ(T)lnT\Delta\rho(T)\propto ln T over 2 decades in temperatures above TcT_c. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which TcT_c is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Influence of temperature gradients on tunnel junction thermometry below 1 K: cooling and electron-phonon coupling

    We have studied thermal gradients in thin Cu and AlMn wires, both experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the wires were Joule heated non-uniformly at sub-Kelvin temperatures, and the resulting temperature gradients were measured using normal metal-insulator-superconducting tunnel junctions. The data clearly shows that even in reasonably well conducting thin wires with a short (10μ\sim 10 \mum) non-heated portion, significant temperature differences can form. In most cases, the measurements agree well with a model which includes electron-phonon interaction and electronic thermal conductivity by the Wiedemann-Franz law.Comment: J. Low Temp. Phys. in pres
