SPIRE imaging of M 82: Cool dust in the wind and tidal streams
M 82 is a unique representative of a whole class of galaxies, starbursts with superwinds, in the Very Nearby Galaxy Survey with Herschel. In addition, its interaction with the M 81 group has stripped a significant portion of its interstellar medium from its disk. SPIRE maps now afford better characterization of the far-infrared emission from cool dust outside the disk, and sketch a far more complete picture of its mass distribution and energetics than previously possible. They show emission coincident in projection with the starburst wind and in a large halo, much more extended than the PAH band emission seen with Spitzer. Some complex substructures coincide with the brightest PAH filaments, and others with tidal streams seen in atomic hydrogen. We subtract the far-infrared emission of the starburst and underlying disk from the maps, and derive spatially-resolved far-infrared colors for the wind and halo. We interpret the results in terms of dust mass, dust temperature, and global physical conditions. In particular, we examine variations in the dust physical properties as a function of distance from the center and the wind polar axis, and conclude that more than two thirds of the extraplanar dust has been removed by tidal interaction, and not entrained by the starburst wind
Relationship of Blood Serum Protein and Protein Fractions to Milk Constituents and Temperature-Season
Blood serum protein and protein fractions were determined in 265 samples from 62 lactating Holstein cows over one calendar year. Temperature-seasonal changes (cool, optimum, hot) were responsible for significant linear and quadratic fluctuation in serum protein fractions. Serum albumin, β-globulin, α2- globulin, and the A:G ratio significantly decreased as seasons progressed from cool to hot. Further, globulin and γ-globulin both increased significantly from cool to hot seasons. An a1bumin:globulin ratio (.56:1) was inverted. Milk fat percentage was positively correlated with serum albumin percentage and a1bumin:globulin ratio and negatively correlated with total serum protein, and serum globulin and γ-globulin percentages. No correlations were significant between Wisconsin Mastitis Test or Direct Microscopic Somatic Cell Count and any of the serum protein constituents or total serum protein. Monthly 4% fat-corrected milk was negatively correlated with total serum protein and serum globulin percentage and positively correlated with serum α2-globulin percentage. © 1972, American Dairy Science Association. Acid/base-triggered switching of circularly polarized luminescence and electronic circular dichroism in organic and organometallic helicenes.
Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence acid/base switching activity has been demonstrated in helicene-bipyridine proligand 1 a and in its “rollover” cycloplatinated derivative 2 a. Whereas proligand 1 a displays a strong bathochromic shift (>160 nm) of the nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence upon protonation, complex 2 a displays slightly stronger emission. This strikingly different behavior between singlet emission in the organic helicene and triplet emission in the organometallic derivative has been rationalized by using quantum-chemical calculations. The very large bathochromic shift of the emission observed upon protonation of azahelicene-bipyridine 1 a has been attributed to the decrease in aromaticity (promoting a charge-transfer-type transition rather than a π–π* transition) as well as an increase in the HOMO–LUMO character of the transition and stabilization of the LUMO level upon protonation
A Spitzer Unbiased Ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey
We carried out an unbiased, spectroscopic survey using the low-resolution
module of the infrared spectrograph (IRS) on board Spitzer targeting two 2.6
square arcminute regions in the GOODS-North field. IRS was used in spectral
mapping mode with 5 hours of effective integration time per pixel. One region
was covered between 14 and 21 microns and the other between 20 and 35 microns.
We extracted spectra for 45 sources. About 84% of the sources have reported
detections by GOODS at 24 microns, with a median F_nu(24um) ~ 100 uJy. All but
one source are detected in all four IRAC bands, 3.6 to 8 microns. We use a new
cross-correlation technique to measure redshifts and estimate IRS spectral
types; this was successful for ~60% of the spectra. Fourteen sources show
significant PAH emission, four mostly SiO absorption, eight present mixed
spectral signatures (low PAH and/or SiO) and two show a single line in
emission. For the remaining 17, no spectral features were detected. Redshifts
range from z ~ 0.2 to z ~ 2.2, with a median of 1. IR Luminosities are roughly
estimated from 24 microns flux densities, and have median values of 2.2 x
10^{11} L_{\odot} and 7.5 x 10^{11} L_{\odot} at z ~ 1 and z ~ 2 respectively.
This sample has fewer AGN than previous faint samples observed with IRS, which
we attribute to the fainter luminosities reached here.Comment: Published in Ap
The anterior cribriform plate foramina: from anatomy to surgery
Background: Despite the development of anterior skull base surgery, the anatomy of the nasal bone
and anterior cribriform plate remains unclear. A recent study confirmed 2 distinct foramina in the anterior part
of the cribriform plate: the ethmoidal slit (ES) and the cribroethmoidal foramen (CF). The aim of this study
was to specify their content, their anatomic relationship to the frontal sinus and skull base, and their potential
value in skull base surgery.
Methods: Dissections were performed on 36 cadaver heads. Macro- and microscopic examinations
were carried out. Microcomputed tomography scans contrasted with osmium were performed to identify
vessels and nerves. Histology with neural, meningeal, or luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone
immunomarkers was performed on the content of the foramina. Finally, endonasal surgical dissections were
carried out.
Results: The ES and the CF were observed in all cases. They measured a mean of 4.2 and 1.6 mm,
respectively. The ES contained dura mater, arachnoid tissues, lymphatics, and the terminal nerve. The CF
contained the anterior ethmoidal nerve and artery. This foramen continued forward with the cribroethmoidal
groove, which measured a mean of 2.5 mm. This groove was under the frontal sinus and in front of the skull
base. We also described a "cribroethmoidal canal" and a "nasal bone foramen." Clinical applications are
discussed.
Conclusion: The clinical applications of this new anatomic description concern both the cribriform
plate and frontal sinus surgeries. Identifying the terminal nerve passing through the ES is a step forward in
understanding pheromone recognition in humans
