Decision-making capacity for treatment in psychiatric and medical in-patients: Cross-sectional, comparative study
BackgroundIs the nature of decision-making capacity (DMC) for treatment significantly different in medical and psychiatric patients?AimsTo compare the abilities relevant to DMC for treatment in medical and psychiatric patients who are able to communicate a treatment choice.MethodA secondary analysis of two cross-sectional studies of consecutive admissions: 125 to a psychiatric hospital and 164 to a medical hospital. The MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool – Treatment and a clinical interview were used to assess decision-making abilities (understanding, appreciating and reasoning) and judgements of DMC. We limited analysis to patients able to express a choice about treatment and stratified the analysis by low and high understanding ability.ResultsMost people scoring low on understanding were judged to lack DMC and there was no difference by hospital (P=0.14). In both hospitals there were patients who were able to understand yet lacked DMC (39% psychiatric v. 13% medical in-patients, P<0.001). Appreciation was a better ‘test’ of DMC in the psychiatric hospital (where psychotic and severe affective disorders predominated) (P<0.001), whereas reasoning was a better test of DMC in the medical hospital (where cognitive impairment was common) (P=0.02).ConclusionsAmong those with good understanding, the appreciation ability had more salience to DMC for treatment in a psychiatric setting and the reasoning ability had more salience in a medical setting.</jats:sec
Ground-state properties of trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures: role of exchange-correlation
We introduce Density Functional Theory for inhomogeneous Bose-Fermi mixtures,
derive the associated Kohn-Sham equations, and determine the
exchange-correlation energy in local density approximation. We solve
numerically the Kohn-Sham system and determine the boson and fermion density
distributions and the ground-state energy of a trapped, dilute mixture beyond
mean-field approximation. The importance of the corrections due to
exchange--correlation is discussed by comparison with current experiments; in
particular, we investigate the effect of of the repulsive potential energy
contribution due to exchange--correlation on the stability of the mixture
against collapse.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (final version as published in Physical Review
An Examination of Strategic Drivers Impacting U.S. Multinational Lodging Corporations
Top executives from four major multinational lodging corporations were interviewed on corporate strategies to identify key
strategic drivers for creating value in the global lodging industry. In the face of greater environmental uncertainty, global
competition, and technological change, it is imperative that multinational lodging firms develop strategies for protecting
their domestic franchises and expanding internationally. The findings reveal shifts in current business models, strategies for
changing brand architecture, searches for profitable new markets, commoditization and differentiation of the product, and
development of customer-centered functional strategies. Implications of these strategic changes for the lodging industry are
discussed
Status of the Correlation Process of the V-HAB Simulation with Ground Tests and ISS Telemetry Data
The Virtual Habitat (V-HAB) is a dynamic Life Support System (LSS) simulation, created to investigate future human spaceflight missions. V-HAB provides the capability to optimize LSS during early design phases. Furthermore, it allows simulation of worst case scenarios which cannot be tested in reality. In a nutshell, the tool allows the testing of LSS robustness by means of computer simulations. V-HAB is a modular simulation consisting of a: 1. Closed Environment Module 2. Crew Module 3. Biological Module 4. Physio-Chemical Module The focus of the paper will be the correlation and validation of V-HAB against ground test and flight data. The ECLSS technologies (CDRA, CCAA, OGA, etc.) are correlated one by one against available ground test data, which is briefly described in this paper. The technology models in V-HAB are merged to simulate the ISS ECLSS. This simulation is correlated against telemetry data from the ISS, including the water recovery system and the air revitalization system. Finally, an analysis of the results is included in this paper
Results of the 2016 Indianapolis Biodiversity Survey, Marion County, Indiana
Surprising biodiversity can be found in cities, but urban habitats are understudied. We report on a bioblitz conducted primarily within a 24-hr period on September 16 and 17, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The event focused on stretches of three waterways and their associated riparian habitat: Fall Creek (20.6 ha; 51 acres), Pleasant Run (23.5 ha; 58 acres), and Pogue’s Run (27.1 ha; 67 acres). Over 75 scientists, naturalists, students, and citizen volunteers comprised 14 different taxonomic teams. Five hundred ninety taxa were documented despite the rainy conditions. A brief summary of the methods and findings are presented here. Detailed maps of survey locations and inventory results are available on the Indiana Academy of Science website (https://www.indianaacademyofscience.org/)
The thermal conductivity of alternating spin chains
We study a class of integrable alternating (S1,S2) quantum spin chains with
critical ground state properties. Our main result is the description of the
thermal Drude weight of the one-dimensional alternating spin chain as a
function of temperature. We have identified the thermal current of the model
with alternating spins as one of the conserved currents underlying the
integrability. This allows for the derivation of a finite set of non-linear
integral equations for the thermal conductivity. Numerical solutions to the
integral equations are presented for specific cases of the spins S1 and S2. In
the low-temperature limit a universal picture evolves where the thermal Drude
weight is proportional to temperature T and central charge c.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur
