    Last summer, Toysmart agreed to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission concerning use of its customer information database. Under the terms of the settlement, the defunct Internet toy retailer was permitted to sell customer information without either providing its former customers notice or giving them an opportunity to block the sale or use of their personal information. This issue ignited a privacy-rights maelstrom, but ended anti-climatically for Toysmart; in January, Buena Vista Internet Group, a Disney subsidiary and 60% majority shareholder of Toysmart, agreed to compensate the company\u27s creditors $50,000 for the privilege of destroying the database. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Carol Kenner approved this plan, subject to the limitation that Toysmart attorneys must retain the list and destroy it (rather than physically transfer it to Buena Vista) when all creditor claims are satisfied

    A clinician-mediated, longitudinal tracking system for the follow-up of clinical results

Although many clinicians track their patient follow-up by scheduling follow-up visits or by leaving physical reminders, most feel that automated, computerized systems to track abnormal test results would be useful. While existing clinical decision support systems and computerized clinical reminders focus on providing assistance with choosing the appropriate follow-up management, they fail by not tracking that follow-up effectively. We believe that clinicians do not want suggestions how to manage their patients, but instead want help tracking follow-up results once they have decided the management plan. We believe that a well-designed system can successfully track this follow-up and only require a small amount of information and time from the clinician. We have designed and implemented a complete tracking system including 1) an authoring tool to define tracking guidelines, 2) a query tool to search electronic medical records and identify patients without follow-up, and 3) a clinical tool to send reminders to clinicians and allow them to easily choose the follow-up management. Our tracking system has made improvements on previous reminder systems by 1) using our unique risk-management guideline model that more closely mirrors, yet does not attempt to replicate, the clinical decision process, 2) our use of massive population-based queries for tracking all patients simultaneously, and 3) our longitudinal approach that documents all steps in the patient follow-up cycle. With these developments, we are able to track 450 million pieces of clinical data for 1.8 million patients daily.(cont.)     Strategic supply chain management implications of an unregulated BREXIT

    Due to the integrated, complex and long supply chain structure of the automotive industry and the large size of cross-border trade of components and cars between UK´s and EU´s automotive supply chain actors, the implementation of a tariff scheme and custom handling procedures in the event of an unregulated (hard) BREXIT by March 2019 negatively affects the industry. The fundamental Four Freedoms are hindered resulting in an increase of sourcing costs. Assembly parts and distribution of final cars becomes costlier. The crucial JIT (just-in-time) philosophy is jeopardized due to the requirement of safety stock and custom checks. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a case study providing students with an effective way to apply Strategic- and Supply Chain Management (SCM) concepts based on a real case scenario of automobile industry (BMW). Professors are provided with resolution documents to effectively assess students’ solutions. A deductive approach was adopted in which the causal relationship between a hard BREXIT and strategic SCM implications is elaborated. A qualitative exploratory method was adopted, and the nature of the collected data is primarily qualitative, but also entails quantitative elements. Data was retrieved from scientific articles, industry specific reports, company reports, interviews and documentation from BMW. A hard BREXIT presents great challenges for BMW and their suppliers. BMW should foster cooperation with suppliers and engage in more backward integration policies to secure supply of strategic components and avoid supply stops. Supply network flexibility is crucial to maintain a sustained competitive SC. To offset trade barrier costs, BMW should partially shift MINI and eMINI production from the UK to other suitable European countries such as Hungary or the Netherlands and the company should aim towards more local sourcing in the UK for more standardized components

    Explicit error bounds for lazy reversible Markov Chain Monte Carlo

    We prove explicit, i.e., non-asymptotic, error bounds for Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, such as the Metropolis algorithm. The problem is to compute the expectation (or integral) of f with respect to a measure which can be given by a density with respect to another measure. A straight simulation of the desired distribution by a random number generator is in general not possible. Thus it is reasonable to use Markov chain sampling with a burn-in. We study such an algorithm and extend the analysis of Lovasz and Simonovits (1993) to obtain an explicit error bound

    A nod in the wrong direction : Does nonverbal feedback affect eyewitness confidence in interviews?

    Eyewitnesses can be influenced by an interviewer's behaviour and report information with inflated confidence as a result. Previous research has shown that positive feedback administered verbally can affect the confidence attributed to testimony, but the effect of non-verbal influence in interviews has been given little attention. This study investigated whether positive or negative non-verbal feedback could affect the confidence witnesses attribute to their responses. Participants witnessed staged CCTV footage of a crime scene and answered 20 questions in a structured interview, during which they were given either positive feedback (a head nod), negative feedback (a head shake) or no feedback. Those presented with positive non-verbal feedback reported inflated confidence compared with those presented with negative non-verbal feedback regardless of accuracy, and this effect was most apparent when participants reported awareness of the feedback.     Performance on a Virtual Reality Angled Laparoscope Task Correlates with Spatial Ability of Trainees

    The aim of the present study was to investigate whether trainees' performance on a virtual reality angled laparoscope navigation task correlates with scores obtained on a validated conventional test of spatial ability. 56 participants of a surgery workshop performed an angled laparoscope navigation task on the Xitact LS 500 virtual reality Simulator. Performance parameters were correlated with the score of a validated paper-and-pencil test of spatial ability. Performance at the conventional spatial ability test significantly correlated with performance at the virtual reality task for overall task score (p < 0.001), task completion time (p < 0.001) and economy of movement (p = 0.035), not for endoscope travel speed (p = 0.947). In conclusion, trainees' performance in a standardized virtual reality camera navigation task correlates with their innate spatial ability.
