Higher Order Approximation to the Hill Problem Dynamics about the Libration Points

An analytical solution to the Hill problem Hamiltonian expanded about the libration points has been obtained by means of perturbation techniques. In order to compute the higher orders of the perturbation solution that are needed to capture all the relevant periodic orbits originated from the libration points within a reasonable accuracy, the normalization is approached in complex variables. The validity of the solution extends to energy values considerably far away from that of the libration points and, therefore, can be used in the computation of Halo orbits as an alternative to the classical Lindstedt-Poincar\'e approach. Furthermore, the theory correctly predicts the existence of the two-lane bridge of periodic orbits linking the families of planar and vertical Lyapunov orbits.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figure

Richard Cobden’s Liberal Mission and the Quest for Universal Peace

Richard Cobden (1804-1865) is probably best known nowadays as the political agitator behind the introduction of free trade in England. Together with John Bright, he led the anti-Corn Law League, a mass political movement that resulted in the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. He was an uncommon type among the British politicians of the time: a merchant and experienced traveller who fostered his career in politics thanks to his remarkable popularity among middle and lower classes. While the literature has mostly examined his ideas on free trade as developed in public and parliamentary speeches, and to a lesser extent in a number of political pamphlets, in this paper I adopt a different stance by focusing on his travel diaries. One of my aims is to assess the relevance of some of his unpublished manuscripts, namely the travel notes he took during his so-called Eastern Tour. Between October 1836 and April 1837 Cobden visited places like Lisbon, Gibraltar, Malta, Constantinople, and Alexandria, before returning home via Greece, and met politicians and intellectuals, collected information on trade and politics, and generally reflected on the state of the countries he visited. More particularly, my aim is to study how the ideas of trade, peace, and civilisation are waved together. Whether he argued a link between the capacity for the development of wealth and commerce in society, a tendency towards a peaceful resolution of conflicts, and the general state of foreign societies as compared to England. This way I hope to examine how Cobden’s entanglements with other cultural and intellectual traditions abroad shaped his economic and political liberal ideas. Although Cobden’s tours have attracted attention in terms of their impact on the development of free-trade policies in the countries he visited, I focus instead on how Cobden’s cosmopolitan experiences led him to elaborate on wider issues on social and economic development and political liberalism.Universidad de Málaga. John Stuart Mill’s Idea of History: A Rhetoric of Progress

    Get PDF
This paper examines the crucial role the idea of history plays in John Stuart Mill’s social and political thought. Insofar as Mill argues that histori-cal change and progress are synonyms, the latter deserves a careful attention. However, academic literature has mostly regarded Mill’s philosophy of histo-ry a topic of minor importance. Some of his philosophical views on history, it will be argued, clearly affect his political views, but they also inform his sci-entific study of society. Accordingly, historical research aims both at under-standing the past to guide society’s future. By analysing the different sources from which Mill draws inspiration, the paper considers his views against the background of his personal and intellectual context. Mill’s temporary depres-sion, along with Macaulay’s criticism of the utilitarian ahistorical conception of politics, triggers an enquiry into the appropriate method to study society, which eventually places history at its core. His reading of Coleridge and a number of French thinkers reflects a renewed interest in the discipline. The article discusses, first, Mill’s interpretation of Coleridge as Bentham’s op-posite pole. Later in the article, I highlight Mill’s debts to Comte and Saint-Simon, especially as regards what he calls the “Inverse Deductive Method”. Some remarks on French historiographers, like Mignet, Dulaure, Sismondi, Michelet and Guizot, also support my argument

This paper aims to offer a general view of the studies devoted in Argentina and Chile to the literary genre called Natural History. With the emerging awareness of nationhood, a number of American and European authors, prompted by a desire for commercial expansion and scientific knowledge, began to describe the wildlife of the American territories. In undertaking this task they made use of classical literature, specially Pliny's Naturalis Historia. One of the most influential authors in this reworking of classical methods and figures was Abbot Molina, whose work Compendio de la Historia Geográfica, Natural y Civil del Reyno de Chile is closely modelled on Pliny's style
