    Key features of a succesful invasive macroalgae: the case of asparagopsis taxiformis in Alboran Sea

    Asparagopsis taxiformis (Bonnemaisoniales, Rhodophyta) is considered one of the most invasive seaweeds in the Mediterranean, and is included in the spanish checklist of invasive species. Recorded for first time in Southern Spain nearly twenty years ago, we are now ready to highlight its key features to have become a successful invader in Alboran Sea. Genetic studies showed that only one lineage of this species complex, is invasive in Alboran Sea, the lineage 2, which exhibits a wide physiological plasticity, exhibited in a wide thermal adaptation of performances of photosynthetic parameters like Pmax and α. Furthermore, the species is able to inhabit from shallow subtidal up to depths over -30m, due to its low Ic. The species exhibits a trigenetic life-cycle, with an invasive gametophyte dominating the host community, and a free-living tetrasporophyte (Falkenbergia phase) being the dispersal one. The gametophyte is present all the year round, and exhibits a high recruitment and vegetative growth capacity, which support more than 90% of the community biomass. Furthermore, sexual reproduction was perfomed during the whole year, except in winter months, accounting in summer months with more than 50% of the population with reproductive structures. Minimum size for reproduction was low (4-6 cm), considering the maximal size observed for the species in the study site (30 cm). Statistical anaylisis has shown no relationship of reproduction with environmental factors, such as nutrients or temperatura. These features, together with some other more, become A. taxiformis in an invasive species already well settled in Alboran Sea.Universidad de Málaga.     Evaluation and characterization of nutritional, microbiological and sensory properties of beet greens

    Growing interest of consumers on incorporate healthy foods into their diets has triggered extensive research in finding and developing new food products that meet their expectations. Leaves of beet plants are an alternative source of appreciable value albeit they are usually discarded at the time of beetroot harvest. The aim of this study was to evaluate and characterize the nutritional, microbiological and sensory quality of beet greens as a prelude to the development of new products from them. Beet greens represents approximately 50% of harvested material. The proximate composition of leaves and its anti-nutritional factors (oxalate, phytates and tanins) were in the range of commonly consumed leafy vegetables, standing out for its high contents of protein, fat, fiber and iron and low content of phytates and tanins. Contents of phytochemical compounds, especially carotenoids and betalains, were higher than those reported for commonly consumed leafy vegetables, resulting in a high antioxidant potential. Microbiological counts were in the typical range for fresh consumed leafy vegetables while, sensorial quality resulted adequate with highly appreciated characteristics in beet greens such as red veins and green blade. This work sets the basis for several recovery possibilities such as development of a minimally processed product for fresh consumption and the extraction of phytochemical compounds from this resource.Fil: Fernandez, María Verónica.     Bio-adhesives from soy protein concentrate and montmorillonite: Rheological and thermal behaviour

    The incorporation of different amounts of montmorillonite (MMT) to soy protein concentrate (SPC) was used to improve the performance of the bio-nano-adhesive obtained. X-Ray diffraction, rheology, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electronic microscopy were carried out to characterize the adhesives, and dry and wet strength was used to determine the adhesion strength. In the rheological measurement, the incorporation of up to 3 wt% of MMT did not modify the consistency index values of the SPC, while an increase in the flow consistency index for higher concentrations can be observed due to a strong interaction between MMT and the protein. Besides, the flow point values increase four times with respect to the value obtained for SPC alone. The decomposition temperature of SPC increases with the addition of MMT, which provides a tortuous pathway that obstructs the diffusion of volatile products out of the bio-nano-adhesive. Further addition beyond 5 wt% led to the formation of agglomerates, as verified by SEM. Moreover, the roughness of the fractured surface of the matrix can explain the decrease of the net adhesion of the nano-particles to the SPC suspensions.Fil: Bacigalupe, Alejandro.     Proyecto de aprendizaje-servicio para la formación inicial del maestro/a de educación infantil desde contextos reales

    En este trabajo se presentan los principales elementos de un Proyecto de Coordinación Docente desarrollado en el curso académico 2016/17, en 1º curso del Grado de Maestro/a de Educación Infantil de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Málaga. En él se han unificado principios y prácticas de las asignaturas de “Hacia una escuela inclusiva: modelos y prácticas”, “Organización Escolar en la Educación Infantil” y “Didáctica aplicada a la Educación Infantil”. La finalidad ha sido provocar en el alumnado el conocimiento, a través de la experiencia de su práctica real, desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar y reflexiva partiendo de los contenidos de las tres disciplinas. Como eje conductor, el aprendizaje han pivotado sobre un Proyecto de Aprendizaje-Servicio a la comunidad, en este caso, la mejora del Patio de Recreo de una Escuela de Infantil de la localidad, procurando convertirlo en un patio lúdico y educativo, donde cada una y cada uno de los niños vea facilitado su derecho al juego. Dicho proyecto ha posibilitado que nuestro alumnado pueda construir una visión de las asignaturas como recursos para dar respuestas a una única realidad, que es a lo que se enfrentarán en su futuro profesional. Igualmente, ha facilitado el aprendizaje a partir de otros tiempos y espacios didácticos más abiertos e integrales, mediante el trabajo colaborativo de docentes y alumnado y centrando la enseñanza en el aprendizaje.     Análisis del machismo sexual en estudiantes universitarios

    A study is presented that analyzed the characteristics of sexism; a descriptive, non-experimental cross-sectional methodology was used. The sample consisted of 3004 randomly chosen university students. A measurement scale with 12 items was used that allowed us to understand the current situation of the students in relation to sexism. The results indicate that sexism in university students is low, statistically significant differences were found between men and women, however, both groups present low scores. Likewise, there are differences in sexism by professional career, where engineering students score higher than social science students and age correlates directly and low with the variable under study. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 3004 estudiantes universitarios escogidos aleatoriamente. Se utilizó una escala de medición con 12 ítems que permitieron entender la situación actual de los estudiantes en relación con el machismo sexual. Los resultados indican que el machismo sexual en estudiantes universitarios es de nivel bajo, se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre hombres y mujeres, sin embargo, ambos grupos presentan puntajes bajos. Asimismo, existen diferencias del machismo sexual por carrera profesional, donde los estudiantes de ingenierías puntúan más alto que los estudiantes de ciencias sociales y que la edad correlaciona de forma directa y baja con la variable de estudio.     The role of small woodland remnants on ground dwelling insect conservation in Chaco Serrano, central Argentina

    Most terrestrial ecosystems are changing due to extensive land use, with habitat fragmentation being a major threat to biodiversity. We studied the effects of patch size, isolation and edge/interior localization on the ground dwelling insect communities associated to Chaco Serrano woodland remnants, in central Argentina. Sampling was carried out in December 2003 and March 2004 in nine remnants (0.57-1000ha) using pitfall traps. In total, 7071 individuals representing 12 orders and 79 families were recorded. The taxonomic composition of these communities was linked to remnant size. Insect abundance increased (as did their richness, albeit marginally) as remnant area decreased, with no significant effects of isolation or edge/interior localization on abundance, richness or diversity. No differential area effects were observed when abundance and richness of predators, scavengers and herbivores were compared. Thus, ground insect communities in fragmented Chaco Serrano seem to respond mainly to patch level, rather than to within-patch (edge effects) or landscape (isolation) level variables. Our results suggest that small Chaco Serrano remnants, by supporting larger ground-dwelling insect assemblages, may play an important role from a conservation viewpoint.Fil: Moreno, Maria Laura.     Augmented Statistics of Quaternion Random Variables:A Lynchpin of Quaternion Learning Machines

    Learning machines for vector sensor data are naturally developed in the quaternion domain and are underpinned by quaternion statistics. To this end, we revisit the `augmented' representation basis for discrete quaternion random variables q^a[n], i.e. [ q[n] q^i[n] q^j[n] q^k[n] ]; and demonstrate its pivotal role in the treatment of the generality of quaternion random variables (RV). This is achieved by a rigorous consideration of the augmented quaternion RV, and by involving for additional second order statistics, besides the traditional covariance E{q[n]q*[n]}. To illuminate the usefulness of quaternions, we consider their most well-known application - three-dimensional (3D) orientation and offer an account of augmented statistics for purely imaginary (pure) quaternions. The quaternion statistics presented here can be exploited in the analysis of the existing and the development of novel statistical machine learning methods, hence acting as a lynchpin for quaternion learning machines

    Fruit and vegetable smoothies preservation with natural antimicrobials for the assurance of safety and quality

    Current consumption trends indicate a clear increased interest in more natural, nutritious and healthier foods. Accordingly, natural fruits and vegetables (F&V) based beverages (juices, smoothies) companies showed great growth, since perceived as a practical way of ingesting the F&V nutrients and bioactives. However, when untreated, these products have a short shelf-life, mainly due to microbial spoilage. The combination of natural antimicrobials for their preservation constitutes an option in line with consumers’ requirements. This study aims to evaluate different combinations of natural antimicrobials, nisin, natamycin, green tea extract (GTE) and citric acid, to preserve the quality of a mixed F&V smoothie, extending their shelf-life and ensuring their safety. The results obtained suggest that a treatment with nisin 12.5 mg/kg natamycin 200 mg/kg and citric acid (until pH 3.5) could achieve a shelf-life extension of 14 d, a product with great nutritional and microbiological quality until 28 d of storage at 5 °C. Moreover, this treatment would allow controlling a 6 log CFU/mL Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Furthermore, if GTE (0.2%) is added to that combination, a product with fortified antioxidant properties (more than 10 times higher than control) is achieved, fulfilling the requirements of the most demanding natural products consumers.Fil: Nieva, S.     Germinação da semente e desenvolvimento pós-seminal de Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J. C. Sowerby (Nymphaeaceae) na Amazônia Central

    The Amazon floodplains are specific ecosystems with high biodiversity and endemism, divided in varzeas, white fertile waters, and Igapos with poor and acid waters, black or clear, and mixed waters between the two typologies. The main purpose of this investigation was to characterize the seed germination and post-seminal development of Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Sowerby, one of the few hydrophytes occurring in varzea and mixed waters in the region. In addition, it was evaluated the influence of environmental characteristics on the growth of the plants. Germination was monitored in seeds with and without scarification, in control and treatments with water low oxygen and in the dark. The plant development was monitored in field and laboratory; material from juvenile and adult plants was collected at six sampling sites near Manaus. Germination is favored in the dark, in hypoxic conditions, in water and seed coat shaved. The seedling has two cotyledons, one inside the seed and the other with an acicular shape, eophyll deltoid-hastate, abortive primary root and adventitious roots. New eophylls and the first metaphyll appear in twenty-day-old plants. The stem is rhizomatous. The mixed water environment was not very different from the varzea which is reflected in a similar chemical composition of the plants of both systems. The rhizomes of the varzea environment have caloric value three times higher than that of mixed water. This condition and the presence of larger leaves suggest the varzea floodplain to be more favorable environment for growth of Victoria amazonica.As várzeas amazônicas são ecossistemas específicos de alta biodiversidade e endemismo, que consistem em várzeas, com águas transparentes e férteis em nutrientes, e Igapós com água pobre e ácida, escura ou clara, e águas mistas entre os dois tipos referidos. O principal objetivo dessa investigação foi caracterizar a germinação das sementes e o desenvolvimento pós-seminal de Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Sowerby, que é considerada uma das poucas hidrófitas de várzea e águas mistas da região. Além disso, foi avaliada a influência das características ambientais no crescimento das plantas. A germinação foi monitorada em sementes com e sem escarificação, no controle e tratamentos com água de baixo teor de oxigênio e no escuro. O desenvolvimento da planta foi acompanhado no campo e laboratório; material de plantas juvenis e adultas foi coletado em seis amostras de locais próximos de Manaus. A germinação é favorecida no escuro, em condições hipóxicas, água e semente escarificada. A plântula tem dois cotilédones, um que permanece no interior da semente e outro acicular, eofilo deltoide-hastado, raiz primária abortiva e raízes adventícias. Novos eofilos e primeiro metafilo formam-se em plantas de vinte dias. O caule é rizomatoso. Ambiente de água mista não foi diferente da várzea, comprovado pela composição química similar das plantas de ambos sistemas. Os rizomas da várzea têm valores calóricos três vezes maior do que o de água mista. Esta condição e a presença de folhas maiores sugerem que a várzea é ambiente mais favorável para crescimento de Victoria amazonica
