    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     Actuator and sensor fault estimation based on a proportional-integral quasi-LPV observer with inexact scheduling parameters

ElsevierThis paper presents a method for actuator and sensor fault estimation based on a proportional-integral observer (PIO) for a class of nonlinear system described by a polytopic quasi-linear parameter varying (qLPV) mathematical model. Contrarily to the traditional approach, which considers measurable or unmeasurable scheduling parameters, this work proposes a methodology that considers inexact scheduling parameters. This condition is present in many physical systems where the scheduling parameters can be affected by noise, offsets, calibration errors, and other factors that have a negative impact on the measurements. A H8 performance criterion is considered in the design in order to guarantee robustness against sensor noise, disturbance, and inexact scheduling parameters. Then, a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) is derived by the use of a quadratic Lyapunov function. The solution of the LMI guarantees asymptotic stability of the PIO. Finally, the performance and applicability of the proposed method are illustrated through a numerical experiment in a nonlinear system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    NSGA-II-trained neural network approach to the estimation of prediction intervals of scale deposition rate in oil & gas equipment

    International audienceScale deposition can damage equipment in the oil & gas production industry. Hence, the reliable and accurate prediction of the scale deposition rate is critical for production availability. In this study, we consider the problem of predicting the scale deposition rate, providing an indication of the associated prediction uncertainty. We tackle the problem using an empirical modeling approach, based on experimental data. Specifically, we implement a multi-objective genetic algorithm (namely, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II)) to train a neural network (NN) (i.e. to find its parameters, that is its weights and biases) to provide the prediction intervals (PIs) of the scale deposition rate. The PIs are optimized both in terms of accuracy (coverage probability) and dimension (width). We perform k-fold cross-validation to guide the choice of the NN structure (i.e. the number of hidden neurons). We use hypervolume indicator metric to evaluate the Pareto fronts in the validation step. A case study is considered, with regards to a set of experimental observations: the NSGA-II-trained neural network is shown capable of providing PIs with both high coverage and small width

    Kalman filters for leak diagnosis in pipelines: brief history and future research

    The purpose of this paper is to provide a structural review of the progress made on the detection and localization of leaks in pipelines by using approaches based on the Kalman filter. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first review on the topic. In particular, it is the first to try to draw the attention of the leak detection community to the important contributions that use the Kalman filter as the core of a computational pipeline monitoring system. Without being exhaustive, the paper gathers the results from different research groups such that these are presented in a unified fashion. For this reason, a classification of the current approaches based on the Kalman filter is proposed. For each of the existing approaches within this classification, the basic concepts, theoretical results, and relations with the other procedures are discussed in detail. The review starts with a short summary of essential ideas about state observers. Then, a brief history of the use of the Kalman filter for diagnosing leaks is described by mentioning the most outstanding approaches. At last, brief discussions of some emerging research problems, such as the leak detection in pipelines transporting heavy oils; the main challenges; and some open issues are addressed
