The changes in U.S. pork trade in the past 20 years are quite impressive. U.S. pork exports have grown from 86 million pounds carcass weight equivalent in 1986 to 2.66 billion pounds in 2005. This paper discusses the changes in pork trade since 1986

The changes in U.S. pork trade in the past 21 years are quite impressive. U.S. pork exports have grown from 86 million pounds carcass weight equivalent in 1986 to 3 billion pounds in 2006. This paper discusses the changes in pork trade since 1986 and how these changes have affected the industry

Directing growth cones of optic axons growing with laser scissors and laser tweezers

    Get PDF
We have combined a laser scissors and a laser tweezers to study, (1) the response of nerve fiber growth cones to laserinduced damage on single axons, and (2) localized microfluidic flow generated by laser-driven spinning birefringent particles. In the laser scissors study, sub-axotomy damage elicits a growth cone response whether damage is on the same or an adjacent axon. In laser tweezers study, the axon growth cones turn in response to the optically driven microfluidic flow. In summary, both the laser scissors and the laser tweezers studies elicit growth cone turning responses

The Global Emerging Infection Surveillance and Response System (GEIS), a U.S. government tool for improved global biosurveillance: a review of 2009

The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System (AFHSC-GEIS) has the mission of performing surveillance for emerging infectious diseases that could affect the United States (U.S.) military. This mission is accomplished by orchestrating a global portfolio of surveillance projects, capacity-building efforts, outbreak investigations and training exercises. In 2009, this portfolio involved 39 funded partners, impacting 92 countries. This article discusses the current biosurveillance landscape, programmatic details of organization and implementation, and key contributions to force health protection and global public health in 2009

Catastrophic senescence and semelparity in the Penna aging model

The catastrophic senescence of the Pacific salmon is among the initial tests used to validate the Penna aging model. Based on the mutation accumulation theory, the sudden decrease in fitness following reproduction may be solely attributed to the semelparity of the species. In this work, we report other consequences of mutation accumulation. Contrary to earlier findings, such dramatic manifestation of aging depends not only on the choice of breeding strategy but also on the value of the reproduction age, R, and the mutation threshold, T. Senescence is catastrophic when T≤RT \leq R. As the organism's tolerance for harmful genetic mutations increases, the aging process becomes more gradual. We observe senescence that is threshold dependent whenever T>R. That is, the sudden drop in survival rate occurs at age equal to the mutation threshold value

Ionized Gas in the Smith Cloud

We present WHAM observations of Halpha, [N II], and [S II] in the Smith Cloud. A map of Halpha emission from the cloud shows ionized gas coincident with the brightest H I emission, but nearly-as-bright Halpha in some regions with faint H I. The ionized mass of the cloud is at least as large as the neutral mass, > 10^6 M_sun. Ionized gas in the core of the Smith Cloud has an electron temperature 6000 K < T < 16000 K. The observed ratio [N II] / Halpha = 0.39 \pm 0.09 shows that the cloud has a non-primordial nitrogen abundance, 0.1 - 1 times solar.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.
