Anthropometric measures as predictive indicators of metabolic risk in a population of “holy week costaleros”

Preventive measures are a priority in those groups that perform intense physical efforts without physical preparation and that can also be overweight or obese. One of the groups that reflect these characteristics is the costaleros of the Holy Week of Andalusia, Spain. This paper aims to describe the effect of obesity on blood pressure. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 101 costaleros. The anthropometric measures were determined through segmental impedance. Cardiac recovery and anaerobic power were measured through the Ruffier–Dickson test and the Abalakov test, respectively. Blood pressure was measured when the individuals were at rest. The Kruskal–Wallis test was applied for of continuous parameters and the X2 test for dichotomous measures. Binary logistic regression models were used for the subsequent analysis with R-square and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. The average population was 28 years of age, 173.7 cm tall, and 82.59 Kg weigh. The excess of body fat was 11.27 Kg and Body Mass Index was 27.33 Kg/m2. 72.3% showed abnormal blood pressure and 68.2% were overweight. 32.7% had a waist-hip ratio higher than 0.94. The probability of presenting abnormal blood pressure was higher among the subjects whose fat content was higher and muscle content was lower

Segregation-induced grain boundary electrical potential in ionic oxide materials: A first principles model

    Get PDF
A first principles continuum analytical model for cationic segregation to the grain boundaries in complex ceramic oxides is presented. The model permits one to determine the electric charge density and the segregation-induced electric potential profiles through the grain and can be extrapolated to the range of nanostructured grain sizes. The theoretical predictions are compared with existing data for yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals. The implications for physical properties (mainly high temperature plasticity and hardening behaviour) are then discussed.

Reconstruction of the neutron star equation of state from ww-quasinormal modes spectra with a piecewise polytropic meshing and refinement method

In this paper we present a new approach to the inverse problem for relativistic stars using quasinormal modes and the piecewise polytropic parametrization of the equation of state. The algorithm is a piecewise polytropic meshing and refinement method that reconstructs the neutron star equation of state from experimental data of the mass and the wIwI-quasinormal modes. We present an algorithm able to numerically calculate axial quasinormal modes of neutron stars in an efficient way. We use an initial mesh of 2744027440 equations of state in a 44-volume of piecewise polytropic parameters that contains most of the candidate equations of state used today. The refinement process drives us to the reconstruction of the equation of state with a certain precision. Using the reconstructed equation of state, we calculate predictions for tidal deformability and slow rotation parameters (moment of inertia and quadrupole moment, for example). In order to check the method with an explicit example, we use as input data a few (five) configurations of a given equation of state. We reconstruct the equation of state in a quite good approximation, and then we compare the curves of physical parameters from the original equation of state and the reconstructed one. We obtain a relative difference for all of the parameters smaller than 2.5%2.5\% except for the tidal deformability, for which we obtain a relative difference smaller than 6.5%6.5\%. We also study constraints from GW170817 event for the reconstructed equation of state.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figure

Analysis and Viability of Railway Exportation to Europe from the South of Spain

AbstractMore and more companies nowadays are opting to broaden their horizons in order to offer their products or services abroad. The need for the export arises from the current economic situation, not only in the Andalusian region but also throughout the rest of Spain. While domestic demand is at a standstill, foreign trade is often the best or the only alternative to safeguard the financial survival of the company. The trading of a product beyond national borders implies requirements or demands in which risks and costs occur. This paper is focused on an important challenge, the transport, particularly the freight transport by rail. Railway transport presents interesting advantages, but also some constraints in reaching every place and potential customer. At this point, its combination or intermodality with the road system has a great value, since the road is the nexus between companies and intermodal chains where the trade takes place. This paper defines the options for the railway transport of freights from the south of Spain to Europe, and studies one particular case, to be used as a guidance for companies interested in exports
