    Multispeckle diffusing-wave spectroscopy: a tool to study slow relaxation and time-dependent dynamics

    A multispeckle technique for efficiently measuring correctly ensemble-averaged intensity autocorrelation functions of scattered light from non-ergodic and/or non-stationary systems is described. The method employs a CCD camera as a multispeckle light detector and a computer-based correlator, and permits the simultaneous calculation of up to 500 correlation functions, where each correlation function is started at a different time. The correlation functions are calculated in real time and are referenced to a unique starting time. The multispeckle nature of the CCD camera detector means that a true ensemble average is calculated; no time averaging is necessary. The technique thus provides a "snapshot" of the dynamics, making it particularly useful for non-stationary systems where the dynamics are changing with time. Delay times spanning the range from 1 ms to 1000 s are readily achieved with this method. The technique is demonstrated in the multiple scattering limit where diffusing-wave spectroscopy theory applies. The technique can also be combined with a recently-developed two-cell technique that can measure faster decay times. The combined technique can measure delay times from 10 ns to 1000 s. The method is peculiarly well suited for studying aging processes in soft glassy materials, which exhibit both short and long relaxation times, non-ergodic dynamics, and slowly-evolving transient behavior.Comment: 11 pages 13 figures Accepted in Review of Scientific Instrument (june 02

    An extension of the SHARC survey

    We report on our search for distant clusters of galaxies based on optical and X-ray follow up observations of X-ray candidates from the SHARC survey. Based on the assumption that the absence of bright optical or radio counterparts to possibly extended X-ray sources could be distant clusters. We have obtained deep optical images and redshifts for several of these objects and analyzed archive XMM-Newton or Chandra data where applicable. In our list of candidate clusters, two are probably galaxy structures at redshifts of z\sim0.51 and 0.28. Seven other structures are possibly galaxy clusters between z\sim0.3 and 1. Three sources are identified with QSOs and are thus likely to be X-ray point sources, and six more also probably fall in this category. One X-ray source is spurious or variable. For 17 other sources, the data are too sparse at this time to put forward any hypothesis on their nature. We also serendipitously detected a cluster at z=0.53 and another galaxy concentration which is probably a structure with a redshift in the [0.15-0.6] range. We discuss these results within the context of future space missions to demonstrate the necessity of a wide field of view telescope optimized for the 0.5-2 keV range.Comment: Accepted in A&

    Linear Momentum Density in Quasistatic Electromagnetic Systems

    We discuss a couple of simple quasistatic electromagnetic systems in which the density of electromagnetic linear momentum can be easily computed. The examples are also used to illustrate how the total electromagnetic linear momentum, which may also be calculated by using the vector potential, can be understood as a consequence of the violation of the action-reaction principle, because a non-null external force is required to maintain constant the mechanical linear momentum. We show how one can avoid the divergence in the interaction linear electromagnetic momentum of a system composed by an idealization often used in textbooks (an infinite straight current) and a point charge.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Eur.     Cl 1205+44, a fossil group at z = 0.59

    This is a report of Chandra, XMM-Newton, HST and ARC observations of an extended X-ray source at z = 0.59. The apparent member galaxies range from spiral to elliptical and are all relatively red (i'-Ks about 3). We interpret this object to be a fossil group based on the difference between the brightness of the first and second brightest cluster members in the i'-band, and because the rest-frame bolometric X-ray luminosity is about 9.2x10^43 h70^-2 erg s^-1. This makes Cl 1205+44 the highest redshift fossil group yet reported. The system also contains a central double-lobed radio galaxy which appears to be growing via the accretion of smaller galaxies.     An empirical eigenvalue-threshold test for sparsity level estimation from compressed measurements

    Compressed sensing allows for a significant reduction of the number of measurements when the signal of interest is of a sparse nature. Most computationally efficient algorithms for signal recovery rely on some knowledge of the sparsity level, i.e., the number of non-zero elements. However, the sparsity level is often not known a priori and can even vary with time. In this contribution we show that it is possible to estimate the sparsity level directly in the compressed domain, provided that multiple independent observations are available. In fact, one can use classical model order selection algorithms for this purpose. Nevertheless, due to the influence of the measurement process they may not perform satisfactorily in the compressed sensing setup. To overcome this drawback, we propose an approach which exploits the empirical distributions of the noise eigenvalues. We demonstrate its superior performance compared to state-of-the-art model order estimation algorithms numerically. © 2014 EURASIP

    On the Nature of Fossil Galaxy Groups: Are they really fossils ?

    We use SDSS-DR4 photometric and spectroscopic data out to redshift z~0.1 combined with ROSAT All Sky Survey X-ray data to produce a sample of twenty-five fossil groups (FGs), defined as bound systems dominated by a single, luminous elliptical galaxy with extended X-ray emission. We examine possible biases introduced by varying the parameters used to define the sample and the main pitfalls are discussed. The spatial density of FGs, estimated via the V/V_ MAX} test, is 2.83 x 10^{-6} h_{75}^3 Mpc^{-3} for L_x > 0.89 x 10^42 h_{75}^-2 erg/s consistent with Vikhlinin et al. (1999), who examined an X-ray overluminous elliptical galaxy sample (OLEG). We compare the general properties of FGs identified here with a sample of bright field ellipticals generated from the same dataset. These two samples show no differences in the distribution of neighboring faint galaxy density excess, distance from the red sequence in the color-magnitude diagram, and structural parameters such as a4_{4} and internal color gradients. Furthermore, examination of stellar populations shows that our twenty-five FGs have similar ages, metallicities, and α\alpha-enhancement as the bright field ellipticals, undermining the idea that these systems represent fossils of a physical mechanism that occurred at high redshift. Our study reveals no difference between FGs and field ellipticals, suggesting that FGs might not be a distinct family of true fossils, but rather the final stage of mass assembly in the Universe.Comment: 18 pages, Accepted to A

    Topological Lattice Gravity Using Self-Dual Variables

    Topological gravity is the reduction of general relativity to flat space-times. A lattice model describing topological gravity is developed starting from a Hamiltonian lattice version of B\w F theory. The extra symmetries not present in gravity that kill the local degrees of freedom in BFB\wedge F theory are removed. The remaining symmetries preserve the geometrical character of the lattice. Using self-dual variables, the conditions that guarantee the geometricity of the lattice become reality conditions. The local part of the remaining symmetry generators, that respect the geometricity-reality conditions, has the form of Ashtekar's constraints for GR. Only after constraining the initial data to flat lattices and considering the non-local (plus local) part of the constraints does the algebra of the symmetry generators close.     The Bright SHARC Survey: The Cluster Catalog

    We present the Bright SHARC (Serendipitous High-Redshift Archival ROSAT Cluster) Survey, which is an objective search for serendipitously detected extended X-ray sources in 460 deep ROSAT PSPC pointings. The Bright SHARC Survey covers an area of 178.6 sq.deg and has yielded 374 extended sources. We discuss the X-ray data reduction, the candidate selection and present results from our on-going optical follow-up campaign. The optical follow-up concentrates on the brightest 94 of the 374 extended sources and is now 97% complete. We have identified thirty-seven clusters of galaxies, for which we present redshifts and luminosities. The clusters span a redshift range of 0.0696<z<0.83 and a luminosity range of 0.065<Lx<8.3e44 erg/s [0.5-2.0 keV] (assuming Ho = 50 km/s/Mpc and qo=0.5). Twelve of the clusters have redshifts greater than z=0.3, eight of which are at luminosities brighter than Lx=3e44 erg/s. Seventeen of the 37 optically confirmed Bright SHARC clusters have not been listed in any previously published catalog. We also report the discovery of three candidate ``fossil groups'' of the kind proposed by Ponman et al. (1994).Comment: Minor revisions: References updated and typos corrected.
