„THE RITUAL MURDER OF A GERMAN”. A FEW COMMENTS ON ANDRZEJ STASIUK’S „DOJCZLAND”The subject of the present article is an attempt to interpret Andrzej Stasiuk’s novel entitled Dojczland (Deutschland - Germany) as a book which, on the one hand, seems to be typical of the writer as it continues the poetics of travel style writing, whose best realizations are Stasiuk’s essay Dziennik okrętowy (Ship’s Log) and novels: Jadąc do Babadag (On the Way to Babadag) and Fado, and on the other hand, as a work which undermines this very poetic. For in Dojczland we are dealing with the deconstruction of the very concept of writing about travel – if one assumes that such features, preserved in the tradition of the genre as experiencing, witnessing aiming at trans-cultural communication, fascination with the exoticism of the different and the alien are indeed distinctive of it. In the case of Stasiuk’s novel, the situation is quite different: his description of Germany, as it looms to us from the pages of Dojczland, is in fact a documentation of a certain cognitive and esthetic fiasco. The German travels of the author of Opowieści galicyjskie (Galician Tales) are in reality nothing more than a tautological enumeration of the fantasies associated with the German reality, of successive derivatives of what had already been experienced – in reality presenting the German otherness as its petrified mental picture and by comparing what is different with what is already known, it transforms the exotic into the experience of boredom. The hypothesis with which the author ends his article is the enunciation that maybe it is precisely in this way that Stasiuk carries out a symbolic act of resentful violation of the colonizing discourse of the Western civilization which seems to dominate the Central-European identity

The article aims to characterize new work environments such as coworking spaces, business incubators (including academic business incubators) and startups, and to try to show their educational potential. These environments have a relatively short history, but they have significantly changed the way people think about the educational dimension of professional life. Their educational potential understood as informal and non-formal learning possibilities, includes cooperation with universities and business, practising entrepreneurship, consultations with experts and advisers, feedback, democratic management, diffusion, absorption and transfer of knowledge, following the idea of work-life balance, magazine subscriptions, conferences, training, mentoring and coaching. This educational potential creates a new, promising field of andragogical research.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, has forced all countries affected by it to introduce quarantine and isolation to prevent the spread of the virus, as well as masking and distancing. Not everyone is equally willing to follow the rules related to limit the extent of the coronavirus epidemic. This might be connected with personality traits, especially openness, positive attitude, and optimism. Materials and Methods: An online survey was created and completed by participants in April–May 2020. Self-assessment of personality traits and adherence to lockdown recommendations were assessed. A total of 7404 participants took part in the study, mainly from Poland (83.6%) and Italy (12.7%). Univariate and multivariate regression analysis was performed. Results: The participants were divided into groups depending on the degree of compliance with the lockdown rules. In the multivariate analysis, variables that increased the odds for stricter lockdown compliance were temporary work suspension OR 1.27 (95% CI 1.10–1.48), income level “we can’t handle this situation” OR 1.67 (95%CI 1.20–2.33), and junior high school education OR 1.68 (95% CI 1.13–2.50). Other significant factors included age and place of residence. Each point of self-assessed sociability OR 1.07 (95% CI 1.00–1.13) also increased the likelihood of adhering to lockdown rules. Conclusions: Taking the basic demographic characteristics as well as working and health environment conditions traits into account may be helpful when forecasting epidemiological compliance during a pandemic, as well as in other public health tasks. The key role of self-assessed personality traits was not confirmed in this study. Reliability of the results is limited by significant disproportions in the size of the study groups

My autumn, the sore legs of my mother, the public houses of my Lublin friends. Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki and imitating nothing

The article – which is an abridged version of a paper presented on a conference devoted to new views on the category of realism – has two aims. Firstly, to think over the traditional way of formulating the effect of reality as something that is placed inside a literary work of art. Starting from theoretical identifications of a broadly understood poetics of reception, the author tires to show that it is the reader who is responsible for creating this effect, also because he possess the extratextual knowledge about the text, which it cannot be eliminated from the act of interpretation. In the analytical part – and this is the second aim of the article – the author undertakes an attempt of checking his theoretical intuitions in confrontation with poetry by Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki from the tome A song about dependencies and independencies (Piosenka o zależnościach i niezależnościach) which is exceptionally strongly marked with both autobiographical context and figurization aimed at blurring it

Use of Sertraline in Hemodialysis Patients

No full text
Depression and anxiety are the most common psychiatric disorders in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients treated with hemodialysis (HD) and may correlate with lower quality of life and increased mortality. Depression treatment in HD patients is still a challenge both for nephrologists and psychiatrists. The possible treatment of depressive disorders can be pharmacological and non-pharmacological. In our article, we focus on the use of sertraline, the medication which seems to be relatively safe and efficient in the abovementioned population, taking under consideration several limitations regarding the use of other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In our paper, we discuss different aspects of sertraline use, taking into consideration possible benefits and side effects of drug administration like impact on QTc (corrected QT interval) prolongation, intradialytic hypotension (IDH), chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP), bleeding, sexual functions, inflammation, or fracture risk. Before administering the medication, one should consider benefits and possible side effects, which are particularly significant in the treatment of ESRD patients; this could help to optimize clinical outcomes. Sertraline seems to be safe in the HD population when provided in proper doses. However, we still need more studies in this field since the ones performed so far were usually based on small samples and lacked placebo control

Chromosome Number and Genome Size Evolution in Brasolia and Sobralia (Sobralieae, Orchidaceae)

Despite the clear circumscription of tribe Sobralieae (Orchidaceae), its internal relationships are still dubious. The recently delimited genus Brasolia, based on previous Sobralia species, is now assumed to be paraphyletic, with a third genus, Elleanthus, nested in it. The morphology of these three genera is significantly different, indicating the necessity of new data for a better genera delimitation. Though morphology and molecular data are available, cytogenetics data for Sobralieae is restricted to two Sobralia and one Elleanthus species. Aiming to evaluate the potential of cytogenetic data for Brasolia-Elleanthus-Sobralia genera delimitation, we present chromosome number and genome size data for 21 and 20 species, respectively, and used such data to infer the pattern of karyotype evolution in these genera. The analysis allowed us to infer x = 24 as the base chromosome number and genome size of average 1C-value of 5.0 pg for the common ancestor of Brasolia-Elleanthus-Sobralia. The recurrent descending dysploidy in Sobralieae and the punctual genome upsize suggest a recent diversification in Sobralieae but did not allow differing between Brasolia and Sobralia. However, the basal position of tribe Sobralieae in the subfamily Epidendroideae makes this tribe of interest to further studies clarifying the internal delimitation and pattern of karyotype evolution
