The GR2 gripper: an underactuated hand for open-loop in-hand planar manipulation

    Get PDF
Performing dexterous manipulation of unknown objects with robot grippers without using high-fidelity contact sensors, active/sliding surfaces, or a priori workspace exploration is still an open problem in robot manipulation and a necessity for many robotics applications. In this paper, we present a two-fingered gripper topology that enables an enhanced predefined in-hand manipulation primitive controlled without knowing the size, shape, or other particularities of the grasped object. The in-hand manipulation behavior, namely, the planar manipulation of the grasped body, is predefined thanks to a simple hybrid low-level control scheme and has an increased range of motion due to the introduction of an elastic pivot joint between the two fingers. Experimental results with a prototype clearly show the advantages and benefits of the proposed concept. Given the generality of the topology and in-hand manipulation principle, researchers and designers working on multiple areas of robotics can benefit from the findings

Dietary AGEs as Exogenous Boosters of Inflammation

Most chronic modern non-transmissible diseases seem to begin as the result of low-grade inflammation extending over prolonged periods of time. The importance of diet as a source of many pro-inflammatory compounds that could create and sustain such a low-grade inflammatory state cannot be ignored, particularly since we are constantly exposed to them during the day. The focus of this review is on specific components of the diet associated with inflammation, specifically advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that form during thermal processing of food. AGEs are also generated in the body in normal physiology and are widely recognized as increased in diabetes, but many people are unaware of the potential importance of exogenous AGEs ingested in food. We review experimental models, epidemiologic data, and small clinical trials that suggest an important association between dietary intake of these compounds and development of an inflammatory and pro-oxidative state that is conducive to chronic diseases. We compare dietary intake of AGEs with other widely known dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diets, as well as the Dietary Inflammation Index (DII). Finally, we delineate in detail the pathophysiological mechanisms induced by dietary AGEs, both direct (i.e., non-receptor-mediated) and indirect (receptor-mediated

Economic evaluation of sunitinib versus pazopanib and best supportive care for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma in Chile: cost-effectiveness analysis and a mixed treatment comparison

© 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. Background: Sunitinib and Pazopanib are two metastatic renal cell carcinoma (MRCC) treatment alternatives, however the health system in Chile does not consider coverage for any. The cost-effectiveness versus relevant comparator was assessed to support evidence-based decision making. Methods: A four health states Markov model was built: first, second line treatments, BSC and death. Benefits were measured in QALYs, and efficacy estimates were obtained from an indirect treatment comparison. A 10-year time horizon and a 3% undifferentiated discount rate were considered. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: The costs of treating MRCC with Sunitinib were higher than Pazopanib and BSC. When comparing Sunitinib versus Pazopanib, the incremental benefit is small favoring Sunitinib (0.03 QALYs). The base case scenario shows an average ICER of PA versus BSC of US62,327.11/QALYandofUS62,327.11/QALY and of US85,885/QALY for Sunitinib versus Pazopanib. The ICER was most sensitive to the OS relative to BSC, where evidence was associated to important bias. Conclusions: Sunitinib or Pazopanib can be considered cost-effective if a 3 GDP per-capita threshold is assumed. The decision between SU or PA is highly sensitive to the price of the drugs, rather than the outcomes. Therefore, the decision might be made based on cost-minimization exercise

Werner’s syndrome: understanding the phenotype of premature aging—First case described in Colombia

Pacientes con Síndrome de WernerWerner’s syndrome (WS) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease, which is mainly characterized by scleroderma-like skin changes, juvenile cataracts, short stature, and signs of premature aging. We report a case of a 48-year-old male patient, who presents with cardinal signs of WS including high-pitched voice, sclerotic skin lesions mainly on feet, premature greying of scalp hair, bilateral cataracts, and “bird-like” facial appearance. In addition, the patient presents other clinical characteristics observed in patients with WS such as short stature, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypogonadism, parental consanguinity, and a history of a sibling with similar clinical characteristics. WRN gene sequencing identified the homozygous pathogenic variant NM_00553.4: c.2581C>T (NP_000544.2: pGln861Ter). This is the first case of WS reported in the Colombian population. We report this case to avoid misdiagnosis of this infrequent condition and allow timely identification of potential complications associated with premature aging, especially malignancies, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1903-9621https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6336-5347https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9784-188XRevista Internacional - IndexadaN

La formacion del arquitecto ante la conservacion del patrimonio

    Get PDF

Discapacitat intel·lectual; Retard greu del desenvolupament global; Microcefàlia severaDiscapacidad intelectual; Retraso severo en el desarrollo global; Microcefalia severaIntellectual disability; Severe global developmental delay; Severe microcephalyBackground: De novo pathogenic variants in CHAMP1 (chromosome alignment maintaining phosphoprotein 1) that encodes kinetochore-microtubule associated protein on 13q34 cause a rare neurodevelopmental disorder. Methods: We enrolled 14 individuals with pathogenic variants in CHAMP1 that were documented by exome sequencing or gene panel sequencing. Medical history interviews, seizure surveys, Vineland Adapted Behavior Scales Second Edition, and other behavioral surveys were completed by primary care givers of available participants in Simons Searchlight. Clinicians extracted clinical data from the medical record for two participants. Results: We report on clinical features of fourteen individuals (ages 2-26) with de novo predicted loss of function variants in CHAMP1 and compare them with previously reported cases (total n=32). At least two individuals have the same de novo variant: p.(Ser181Cysfs*5), p.(Trp348*), p.(Arg398*), p.(Arg497*), or p.(Tyr709*). Common phenotypes include intellectual disability/developmental delay, language impairment, congenital and acquired microcephaly, behavioral problems including autism spectrum disorder, seizures, hypotonia, gastrointestinal issues of reflux and constipation, and ophthalmologic issues. Other rarely observed phenotypes include leukemia, failure to thrive and high pain tolerance. Conclusion: Pathogenic variants in CHAMP1 are associated with a variable clinical phenotype of developmental delay/intellectual disability and seizures. This work is supported by the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Research Committee who awarded Madison Garrity Summer Fellowship Honors and grants from SFARI and the JPB Foundation
