    The Influence of Fatty Acid Ester Alcohol Moiety Molecular Structure on Diesel Combustion and Emissions

    At present, biodiesel is primarily comprised of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) obtained by the transesterification of a variety of vegetable oils with methanol. However, transesterification can be carried out with a wide variety of alcohols other than methanol. This paper presents experimental studies carried out on a diesel engine supplied with a range of single-molecule fuels to investigate the effect of fuel molecular structure on combustion and emissions. Eight fatty acid esters that can be produced by transesterification of vegetable oils and animal fats using methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, iso-propanol, iso-butanol, and tert-butanol were investigated. The aim was to ascertain the way in which the structure of the alcohol reactant and the corresponding moiety in the ester molecule affects combustion and emissions. Previously obtained experimental results from a second set of 18 nonoxygenated acyclic hydrocarbons were used to assist the interpretation of the test results from the eight fatty acid esters. The engine tests were carried out at constant injection timing, and they were repeated at constant ignition timing and at constant ignition delay, the latter being achieved through the addition to the various fuels of small quantities of ignition improver (2-ethyl hexyl nitrate). Only small differences in ignition quality of the fatty acid esters were found with variation of the molecular structure of the alcohol moiety. Where present, differences in ignition delay were found to be the main driver of both combustion phasing and emissions production. With the effect of ignition delay isolated, physical properties of the esters, such as thermal degradation prior to vaporization and boiling point, were found to exert an influence on levels of particulate and NOx emissions

    Combustion and emissions characteristics of toluene/n-heptane and 1-octene/n-octane binary mixtures in a direct injection compression ignition engine

    Successfully designing and making effective of use of the next generation of liquid fuels, which will be derived from a range of biomass and fossil sources, requires an understanding of the interactions between structurally similar and dissimilar fuel components when utilised in current engine technology. Interactions between fuel components can influence the release of energy and production of harmful emissions in compression ignition combustion through determination of the autoignition behavior of the fuel. This paper presents experimental studies carried out in a single-cylinder engine supplied with a range of binary mixture fuels to investigate the effect of fuel component interactions on autoignition in direct injection compression ignition. A range of binary mixtures consisting of toluene and n-heptane and also 1-octene and n-octane were tested so as to observe respectively the effect of an aromatic compound and an alkene on n-alkane combustion and emissions. The engine tests were carried out at constant injection timing and they were repeated at constant ignition timing and at constant ignition delay, the latter being achieved through the addition to the various fuels of small quantities of ignition improver (2-ethylhexyl nitrate). Increasing the presence of toluene in the toluene/n-heptane binary mixtures resulted in an increased ignition delay time and generated a distinct two stage ignition process. An increased level of 1-octene in the binary mixtures of 1-octene/n-octane was also found to increase ignition delay, though to a much lesser extent than toluene in the case of the toluene/n-heptane mixtures. Interactions between the fuel components during the ignition delay period appear important in the case of the toluene/n-heptane mixtures but not those of 1-octene/n-octane. At constant injection and constant ignition timings, the combustion phasing and the level of emissions produced by each binary mixture were primarily driven by the ignition delay time. With ignition delay equalised, an effect of adiabatic flame temperature on NOx production was visible

    Five-Year Growth of Rock Lichens in a Low-Arctic Mountain Environment, Northern Labrador

    In 1978, three lichen growth stations were established for Rhizocarpon section Rhizocarpon species and one for Alectoria miniscula in the Cirque Mountain area of the Torngat mountains. Five years later, in 1983, the lichens were remeasured. The five-year growth represented by the change in the theoretical diameter is very variable, between 0.10 and 0.54 mm per year. These rates are larger than expected and exceed rates previously determined for an eastern Arctic area, the Northern Cumberland Peninsula of Baffin Island, by more than 3 to more than 20 times. Similar rates are known for 'great period' growth outside Arctic regions. If the growth rates represent long-term growth, the ages of recessional moraines in the Torngat Mountains should be recalculated. Moraines formerly described as Late Wisconsin to mid-Holocene may be of Neoglacial age. Variability of growth rates from one individual to another precludes using these data for constructing growth curves which may be used, even locally, in lichenometric dating.En 1978, on a établi quatre sites de croissance du lichen dans la région du mont du Cirque dans les monts Torngat: trois sites des espèces Rhizocarpon de la section Rhizocarpon et un site de Alectoria miniscula. Cinq ans plus tard, en 1983, on a mesuré de nouveau les lichens pour constater que le diamètre moyen, qui témoigne de la croissance, a crû de manière très variable, soit de 0,10 à 0,54 mm par année. Ces taux de croissance sont plus élevés que prévu puisqu'ils dépassent de 3 à 20 fois les taux déjà mesurés dans le nord de la péninsule de Cumberland, île de Baffin. De tels taux de croissance du lichen s'apparentent davantage à ceux que l'on a observé dans les régions non arctiques au cours de sa période dite de grande croissance. Si ces taux s'appliquent à de longues périodes, il faudrait réévaluer la date de dépôt des moraines de récession dans les monts Torngat. Les moraines, que l'on croit dater de la période s'étendant du Wisconsinien supérieur à l'Holocène moyen, pourraient en fait dater du néoglaciaire. Toutefois, les variations observées entre les taux de croissance ne permettent pas d'utiliser ces données, même à l'échelle locale, pour tracer des courbes de croissance qui serviraient à établir des datations lichénométriques.1978 wurden im Cirque-Mountain-Gebiet der Torngat mountains vier Stationen zur Beobachtung des Flechten-Wachstums eingerichtet : drei Stationen fur Rhizocarpon-Arten der Sektion Rhizocarpon und eine Station fur Alectoria miniscula. Àhnliche Wachstumsraten sind fur die "groBe Periode" des Flechten-Wachstums auBerhalb der arktischen Gebiete bekannt. Wenn die Wachstumsraten Langzeit-Wachstum reprâsentieren, mûfite das Alter der Rùckzugs-Morànen in den Torngat-Bergen neu berechnet werden. Morànen, die zuvor dem spàten Wisconsin bis mittleren Holozân zugeschrieben wurden, kônnten aus der Neoglazialzeit stammen. Die Variationen der Wachstumsraten von einer Person zur anderen schlieBen eine Nutzung dieser Daten zum Aufbau von Wachstumskurven aus, welche, selbst lokal, zur Datierung auf der Basis der Flechten benutzt werden kônnten

    Frequentist Analysis of the Parameter Space of Minimal Supergravity

    We make a frequentist analysis of the parameter space of minimal supergravity (mSUGRA), in which, as well as the gaugino and scalar soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters being universal, there is a specific relation between the trilinear, bilinear and scalar supersymmetry-breaking parameters, A_0 = B_0 + m_0, and the gravitino mass is fixed by m_{3/2} = m_0. We also consider a more general model, in which the gravitino mass constraint is relaxed (the VCMSSM). We combine in the global likelihood function the experimental constraints from low-energy electroweak precision data, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the lightest Higgs boson mass M_h, B physics and the astrophysical cold dark matter density, assuming that the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is a neutralino. In the VCMSSM, we find a preference for values of m_{1/2} and m_0 similar to those found previously in frequentist analyses of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) and a model with common non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM1). On the other hand, in mSUGRA we find two preferred regions: one with larger values of both m_{1/2} and m_0 than in the VCMSSM, and one with large m_0 but small m_{1/2}. We compare the probabilities of the frequentist fits in mSUGRA, the VCMSSM, the CMSSM and the NUHM1: the probability that mSUGRA is consistent with the present data is significantly less than in the other models. We also discuss the mSUGRA and VCMSSM predictions for sparticle masses and other observables, identifying potential signatures at the LHC and elsewhere.Comment: 18 pages 27 figure

    Establishing local reference intervals for full blood count and white blood cell differential counts in Cape Town, South Africa

    Background. Accurate laboratory reference intervals (RIs) are essential to differentiate between health and disease. There are variations in haematological indices within populations relating to gender, age, ethnicity and environment. Iron deficiency is common, has a wide range of clinical morbidities and affects red cell indices. Locally derived RIs for full blood count (FBC) parameters are needed for the Western Cape region of South Africa, after the exclusion of iron deficiency. In addition, information regarding the prevalence of iron deficiency in first-time blood donors would inform blood transfusion services regarding policies to screen for and treat iron deficiency.Objectives. To establish locally derived RIs for FBC and white blood cell (WBC) differential count parameters in healthy adults in the Cape Town area, by including first-time blood donors and excluding those with iron deficiency and thalassaemic indices. These new locally established RIs could update those in use by the local National Health Laboratory Service. A secondary objective was to establish the prevalence of iron deficiency in first-time blood donors. This would inform blood donation policies regarding screening and appropriate iron supplementation in high-risk groups prior to blood donation.Methods. This was a prospective, descriptive study with direct convenience sampling. Participants were prospective voluntary blood donors aged between 18 and 60 years, presenting for first-time blood donation. Ethnicity was self-identified. Participants who tested positive for HIV or hepatitis B and/or C viruses were excluded. Prospective participants with iron deficiency, defined by serum ferritin levels below the RI, and those with red cell indices suggestive of an underlying thalassaemia trait were excluded. FBC samples were analysed using a Sysmex XN-1000 cell counter. Statistical non-parametric methods were used to calculate the RIs, according to international guidelines.Results. Of the 774 participants screened, 82 (11%) had iron deficiency and were excluded. Six hundred and sixty-two patients were included for analysis, 409 (62%) female and 253 (38%) male. The majority of the participants, 348 (53%), were between 20 and 29 years of age, with a mean age of 29 years for females and 28 years for males. Participants comprised a mix of the various ethnic groups residing in Western Cape Province. The mean haemoglobin concentration for females was lower than that for males (p<0.0001). There were significant gender differences for total WBC count, absolute neutrophil count and platelet count, with females having higher counts than males.Conclusions. Locally established, population-specific RIs are essential for the accurate interpretation of haematological indices. This study established locally derived gender-specific RIs for the Cape Town region, after exclusion of iron deficiency. These new RIs have implications for the accurate diagnoses of cytopenias, cytoses and other blood count abnormalities. Iron deficiency is common in first-time blood donors, and screening for iron deficiency using point-of-care testing should be considered

The ability to distinguish the features of a chemical sedimentary rock that can only be attributed to biology is a challenge relevant to both geobiology and astrobiology. This study aimed to test criteria for recognizing petrographically the biogenicity of microbially influenced fabrics and fossil microbes in complex Quaternary stalactitic carbonate rocks from Caerwys, UK. We found that the presence of carbonaceous microfossils, fabrics produced by the calcification of microbial filaments, and the asymmetrical development of tufa fabrics due to the more rapid growth of microbially influenced laminations could be recognized as biogenic features. Petrographic evidence also indicates that the development of "speleothem-like" laminae was related to episodes of growth interrupted by intervals of nondeposition and erosion. The lack of any biogenic characteristics in these laminae is consistent with their development as a result of variation in the physicochemical parameters that drive calcite precipitation from meteoric waters in such environmental settings

    Mechanism of Vanadium Leaching during Surface Weathering of Basic Oxygen Furnace Steel Slag Blocks: A Microfocus X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Electron Microscopy Study

    © 2017 American Chemical Society. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slag is enriched in potentially toxic V which may become mobilized in high pH leachate during weathering. BOF slag was weathered under aerated and air-excluded conditions for 6 months prior to SEM/EDS and μXANES analysis to determine V host phases and speciation in both primary and secondary phases. Leached blocks show development of an altered region in which free lime and dicalcium silicate phases were absent and Ca-Si-H was precipitated (CaCO 3 was also present under aerated conditions). μXANES analyses show that V was released to solution as V(V) during dicalcium silicate dissolution and some V was incorporated into neo-formed Ca-Si-H. Higher V concentrations were observed in leachate under aerated conditions than in the air-excluded leaching experiment. Aqueous V concentrations were controlled by Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 solubility, which demonstrate an inverse relationship between Ca and V concentrations. Under air-excluded conditions Ca concentrations were controlled by dicalcium silicate dissolution and Ca-Si-H precipitation, leading to relatively high Ca and correspondingly low V concentrations. Formation of CaCO 3 under aerated conditions provided a sink for aqueous Ca, allowing higher V concentrations limited by kinetic dissolution rates of dicalcium silicate. Thus, V release may be slowed by the precipitation of secondary phases in the altered region, improving the prospects for slag reuse
