    While we know, or at least can imagine, what Gower looked like in his old age, it is hard to imagine or hear his voice. And yet, given what we know about his old age and visual impairments, his voice necessarily was important to his old age and continuing revisions of his texts. In this article, I attempt to reconstruct from some of his later poetry what that voice might have sounded like, at least in-text, and piece together how later authors heard that voice of old age

    Investigation into a Practical Application of Reinforcement Learning for the Stock Market

    A major problem of the financial industry is the ability to adapt their trading strategies at the same rate the market evolves. This paper proposes a solution using existing Reinforcement Learning libraries to help find new strategies at a practical scale. Using a wide domain of ticker symbols, an algorithm is trained in an environment that better represents reality. The supplied decision-making algorithm is tested using recorded data from the U.S stock market from 2000 through 2022. The results of this research show that existing techniques are statistically better than making decisions at random. With this result, this research shows how a practical application of Reinforcement Learning is possible through the inclusion of many more ticker symbols than previous research has done before. However, there is still work to be done to achieve acceptable returns. Potential applications of this research include informing human traders or creating automated traders

    Progress in Measurements of the Gravitational Bending of Radio Waves Using the VLBA

    We have used the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43, 23 and 15 GHz to measure the solar gravitational deflection of radio waves among four radio sources during an 18-day period in October 2005. Using phase-referenced radio interferometry to fit the measured phase delay to the propagation equation of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, we have determined the deflection parameter gamma = 0.9998 +/- 0.0003$ (68% confidence level), in agreement with General Relativity. The results come mainly from 43 GHz observations where the refraction effects of the solar corona were negligible beyond 3 degrees from the sun. The purpose of this experiment is three-fold: to improve on the previous results in the gravitational bending experiments near the solar limb; to examine and evaluate the accuracy limits of terrestrial VLBI techniques; and to determine the prospects and outcomes of future experiments. Our conclusion is that a series of improved designed experiments with the VLBA could increase the presented accuracy by at least a factor of 4.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figure

    Coherence between two coupled lasers from a dynamics perspective

    We compare a simple dynamical model of fiber laser arrays with independent experiments on two coupled lasers. The degree of agreement with experimental observations is excellent. Collectively the evidence presented supports this dynamical approach as an alternative to the traditional static eigenmode analysis of the coupled laser cavities
