    The reliability of two visual motor integration tests used with children

    Occupational therapists often assess the visual motor integration (VMI) skills of children and young people. It is important that therapists use tools with strong psychometric properties. This study aims to examine the reliability of 2 VMI tests. Ninety-two children between the ages of 5 and 17 years (response rate of 31%) completed 2 VMI tests: the Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration (DTVMI) and the Full Range Test of Visual Motor Integration (FRTVMI). Cronbach\u27s alpha coefficient was used to examine the internal consistency of the 2 VMI tests whereas Spearman\u27s rho correlation was used to evaluate the test&ndash;retest reliability, intrarater reliability, and interrater reliability of the 2 VMI tests. The Cronbach\u27s alpha coefficient for the DTVMI was .82 and .72 for the FRTVMI. The test&ndash;retest reliability coefficient was .73 (p = .000) for the DTVMI and .49 (p = .05) for the FRTVMI. The interrater correlation was significant for both the DTVMI at .94 (p = .000) and FRTVMI at .68 (p = .001). The DTVMI intrarater reliability correlation result was .90 (p = .000) and the FRTVMI at .85 (p = .000). Overall, the DTVMI exhibited a higher level of reliability than the FRTVMI. Both VMI tests appear to exhibit reasonable levels of reliability and are recommended for use with children and young people.<br /

    Spectroscopy of 28^{28}Na: shell evolution toward the drip line

    Excited states in 28^{28}Na have been studied using the β\beta-decay of implanted 28^{28}Ne ions at GANIL/LISE as well as the in-beam γ\gamma-ray spectroscopy at the NSCL/S800 facility. New states of positive (Jπ^{\pi}=3,4+^+) and negative (Jπ^{\pi}=1-5−^-) parity are proposed. The former arise from the coupling between 0d_5/2\_{5/2} protons and a 0d_3/2\_{3/2} neutron, while the latter are due to couplings with 1p_3/2\_{3/2} or 0f_7/2\_{7/2} neutrons. While the relative energies between the Jπ^{\pi}=1-4+^+ states are well reproduced with the USDA interaction in the N=17 isotones, a progressive shift in the ground state binding energy (by about 500 keV) is observed between 26^{26}F and 30^{30}Al. This points to a possible change in the proton-neutron 0d_5/2\_{5/2}-0d_3/2\_{3/2} effective interaction when moving from stability to the drip line. The presence of Jπ^{\pi}=1-4−^- negative parity states around 1.5 MeV as well as of a candidate for a Jπ^{\pi}=5−^- state around 2.5 MeV give further support to the collapse of the N=20 gap and to the inversion between the 0f_7/2\_{7/2} and 1p_3/2\_{3/2} levels below Z=12. These features are discussed in the framework of Shell Model and EDF calculations, leading to predicted negative parity states in the low energy spectra of the 26^{26}F and 25^{25}O nuclei.Comment: Exp\'erience GANIL/LISE et NSCL/S80

    Selective Laser Sintering and Freeze Extrusion Fabrication of Bioglass Bone Scaffolds [abstract]

    Biomedical Tissue Engineering, Biomaterials, and Medical Devices Poster SessionBioactive glasses are promising materials for bone scaffolds due to their ability to assist in tissue regeneration. When implanted in vivo, bioactive glasses can convert to hydroxyapatite, the main mineral constituent of human bone and form a strong bond with the surrounding tissues, providing an advantage over polymer scaffold materials. Bone scaffold fabrication using additive manufacturing (solid freeform fabrication) methods provides control over design and fabrication of pores in the scaffold. 13-93 bioglass (manufactured by Mo-Sci Corporation), a third-generation bioactive and resorbable material designed to accelerate the body's natural ability to heal itself, was used in the research described herein to fabricate bone scaffolds using two different additive manufacturing methods - Selective Laser Sintering and Freeze Extrusion Fabrication. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a process where a laser light is controlled to selectively sinter the particles in a powder bed layer-by-layer to fabricate a 3D part based on a CAD model. The SLS machine used in this research was a DTM Sinterstation 2000. 13-93 bioglass mixed with stearic acid (as the polymer binder) by ball milling was used as the powder feedstock for the SLS machine. The fabricated green scaffolds underwent binder burnout to remove the stearic acid binder and then sintered at temperatures between 6500C and 7000C. After sintering, the scaffolds were mechanically tested, achieving a maximum compressive strength of 16 MPa for scaffolds with 60% apparent porosity. Bioactivity results showed the ability of the SLS scaffolds to support the growth of osteoblastic cells. Scanning electron microsocopy analysis and MTT formazan formation measurements provided evidence that the bioglass scaffolds fabricated by the SLS process offer a surface capable of supporting robust cell growth. Freeze Extrusion Fabrication (FEF) is a process where an aqueous-based glass paste is extruded and deposited layer-by-layer to fabricate a 3D part in a sub-freezing temperature environment. The FEF system, developed at Missouri S&T, consists of a 3-axis positioning system, a ram extruder for paste extrusion, and position and force sensors for measurement and control. Bioglass slurry was prepared by ball milling 13-93 bioglass particles along with a dispersant (surfynol) and a binder (aquazol). Further, a lubricant (PEG-400) was added to the paste to aid in extrusion. The bioglass slurry was then heated to obtain bioglass paste. Scaffolds with varying pore sizes from 300μm to 800μm were successfully fabricated using the FEF process. Post processing of green scaffolds, including binder burnout and sintering, is currently being performed. Scaffolds produced by the FEF process will be evaluated and compared with the scaffolds obtained using the SLS process

    Pain and analgesic use associated with skeletal-related events in patients with advanced cancer and bone metastases

    PURPOSE: Bone metastases secondary to solid tumors increase the risk of skeletal-related events (SREs), including the occurrence of pathological fracture (PF), radiation to bone (RB), surgery to bone (SB), and spinal cord compression (SCC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of SREs on patients' pain, analgesic use, and pain interference with daily functioning. METHODS: Data were combined from patients with solid tumors and bone metastases who received denosumab or zoledronic acid across three identically designed phase 3 trials (N = 5543). Pain severity (worst pain) and pain interference were assessed using the Brief Pain Inventory at baseline and each monthly visit. Analgesic use was quantified using the Analgesic Quantification Algorithm. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with moderate/severe pain and strong opioid use generally increased in the 6 months preceding an SRE and remained elevated, while they remained relatively consistent over time in patients without an SRE. Regression analysis indicated that all SRE types were significantly associated with an increased risk of progression to moderate/severe pain and strong opioid use. PF, RB, and SCC were associated with significantly greater risk of pain interference overall. Results were similar for pain interference with emotional well-being. All SRE types were associated with significantly greater risk of pain interference with physical function. CONCLUSIONS: SREs are associated with increased pain and analgesic use in patients with bone metastases. Treatments that prevent SREs may decrease pain and the need for opioid analgesics and reduce the impact of pain on daily functioning

    Truncated Power Laws Reveal a Link between Low-Level Behavioral Processes and Grouping Patterns in a Colonial Bird

    Background: Departures from power law group size frequency distributions have been proposed as a useful tool to link individual behavior with population patterns and dynamics, although examples are scarce for wild animal populations. Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied a population of Lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) breeding in groups (colonies) from one to ca. 40 breeding pairs in 10,000 km 2 in NE Spain. A 3.5 fold steady population increase occurred during the eight-year study period, accompanied by a geographical expansion from an initial subpopulation which in turn remained stable in numbers. This population instability was mainly driven by first-breeders, which are less competitive at breeding sites, being relegated to breed solitarily or in small colony sizes, and disperse farther than adults. Colony size frequency distributions shifted from an initial power law to a truncated power law mirroring population increase. Thus, we hypothesized that population instability was behind the truncation of the power law. Accordingly, we found a power law distribution through years in the initial subpopulation, and a match between the power law breakpoint (at ca. ten pairs) and those colony sizes from which the despotic behavior of colony owners started to impair the settlement of newcomers. Moreover, the instability hypothesis was further supported by snapshot data from another population of Lesser kestrels in SW Spain suffering a population decline.     The BRAIN Initiative: developing technology to catalyse neuroscience discovery

    The evolution of the field of neuroscience has been propelled by the advent of novel technological capabilities, and the pace at which these capabilities are being developed has accelerated dramatically in the past decade. Capitalizing on this momentum, the United States launched the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative to develop and apply new tools and technologies for revolutionizing our understanding of the brain. In this article, we review the scientific vision for this initiative set forth by the National Institutes of Health and discuss its implications for the future of neuroscience research. Particular emphasis is given to its potential impact on the mapping and study of neural circuits, and how this knowledge will transform our understanding of the complexity of the human brain and its diverse array of behaviours, perceptions, thoughts and emotions
