Deese-roediger-McDermott paradigm: Effect of previous recall and type of memory task

Na tarefa de completamento, a primação semĂąntica foi estatisticamente superior Ă primação directa. A ausĂȘncia do efeito do nĂvel de processamento demonstra que o teste foi de memĂłria implĂcita. TambĂ©m avaliĂĄmos o impacto de uma tarefa de evocação numa tarefa de memĂłria posterior. VerificĂĄmos que a evocação prĂ©via anulou o efeito do nĂvel de processamento na tarefa de reconhecimento. The finding that lhe levei ofprocessing did not seem to have any effect on the word stem completion task supported lhe conclusion that the stem completion task was in fact an irnplicit memory test. The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. IX. Estimating the Efficiency of Galaxy Formation on the Lowest-Mass Scales
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey has recently determined the
luminosity function of galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster down to
unprecedented magnitude and surface brightness limits. Comparing simulations of
cluster formation to the derived central stellar mass function, we attempt to
estimate the stellar-to-halo-mass ratio (SHMR) for dwarf galaxies, as it would
have been before they fell into the cluster. This approach ignores several
details and complications, e.g., the contribution of ongoing star formation to
the present-day stellar mass of cluster members, and the effects of adiabatic
contraction and/or violent feedback on the subhalo and cluster potentials. The
final results are startlingly simple, however; we find that the trends in the
SHMR determined previously for bright galaxies appear to extend down in a
scale-invariant way to the faintest objects detected in the survey. These
results extend measurements of the formation efficiency of field galaxies by
two decades in halo mass, or five decades in stellar mass, down to some of the

Education policy as an act of white supremacy: whiteness, critical race theory and education reform
The paper presents an empirical analysis of education policy in England that is informed by recent developments in US critical theory. In particular, I draw on âwhiteness studiesâ and the application of Critical Race Theory (CRT). These perspectives offer a new and radical way of conceptualising the role of racism in education. Although the US literature has paid little or no regard to issues outside North America, I argue that a similar understanding of racism (as a multifaceted, deeply embedded, often taken-for-granted aspect of power relations) lies at the heart of recent attempts to understand institutional racism in the UK. Having set out the conceptual terrain in the first half of the paper, I then apply this approach to recent changes in the English education system to reveal the central role accorded the defence (and extension) of race inequity. Finally, the paper touches on the question of racism and intentionality: although race inequity may not be a planned and deliberate goal of education policy neither is it accidental. The patterning of racial advantage and inequity is structured in domination and its continuation represents a form of tacit intentionality on the part of white powerholders and policy makers. It is in this sense that education policy is an act of white supremacy. Following others in the CRT tradition, therefore, the paperâs analysis concludes that the most dangerous form of âwhite supremacyâ is not the obvious and extreme fascistic posturing of small neonazi groups, but rather the taken-for-granted routine privileging of white interests that goes unremarked in the political mainstream
Hot gas in Mach cones around Virgo Cluster spiral galaxies
The detailed comparison between observations and simulations of ram pressure
stripped spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster has led to a three dimensional
view of the galaxy orbits within the hot intracluster medium. The 3D velocities
and Mach numbers derived from simulations can be used to derive simple Mach
cone geometries for Virgo spiral galaxies. We search for indications of hot gas
within Mach cones in X-ray observations of selected Virgo Cluster spiral
galaxies (NGC 4569, NGC 4388, and NGC 4501). We find extraplanar diffuse X-ray
emission in all galaxies. Based on the 3D velocity vectors from dynamical
modelling a simple Mach cone is fitted to the triangular shape of NGC 4569's
diffuse X-ray emission. Assuming that all extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission
has to be located inside the Mach cone, we also fit Mach cones to NGC 4388's
and NGC 4501's extraplanar X-ray emission. For NGC 4569 it is hard to reconcile
the derived Mach cone opening angle with a Mach number based on the sound speed
alone. Instead, a Mach number involving the Alfv\'enic speed seems to be more
appropriate, yielding a magnetic field strength of -6 G for a
intracluster medium density of cm. Whereas the
temperature of the hot component of NGC 4569's X-ray halo (0.5 keV) is at the
high end but typical for a galactic outflow, the temperature of the hot gas
tails of NGC 4388 and NGC 4501 are significantly hotter (0.7-0.9 keV). In NGC
4569 we find direct evidence for a Mach cone which is filled with hot gas from
a galactic superwind. We suggest that the high gas temperatures in the X-ray
tails of NGC 4388 and NGC 4501 are due to the mixing of the stripped ISM into

Analyzing false memories in children with associative lists specific for their age
Two experiments attempted to resolve previous contradictory findings concerning developmental trends in false memories within the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm by using an improved methodology-constructing age-appropriate associative lists. The research also extended the DRM paradigm to preschoolers. Experiment 1 (N = 320) included children in three age groups (preschoolers of 3-4 years, second-graders of 7-8 years, and preadolescents of 11-12 years) and adults, and Experiment 2 (N = 64) examined preschoolers and preadolescents. Age-appropriate lists increased false recall. Although preschoolers had fewer false memories than the other age groups, they showed considerable levels of false recall when tested with age-appropriate materials. Results were discussed in terms of fuzzy-trace, source-monitoring, and activation frameworks

This article revisits accounts of the black radical tradition as a critique and alternative to institutionalised modes of knowledge and learning, reprising Harney and Motenâs concept of the undercommons to think about the constraints of the university and the possibility for thinking differently together. The deployment of linguistic and conceptual difficulty as a tactic of political speech is linked to Sutherlandâs discussion of Marxâs poetics, leading to the suggestion that the repetitive interspersing of poetic or theoretical fragments in the public speech of social justice actors operates to create a shared rhythm that establishes mutuality. The piece ends with a discussion of the refashioning of Audre Lorde as a voice punctuating the assertion of anti-racist and intersectional consciousness via social media
Atomic and Molecular Gas Components in Spiral Galaxies of the Virgo Cluster
Based on two models, we investigate the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio in
Virgo cluster galaxies in comparison with field galaxies. We show that the
enhanced metallicity for cluster members and the ram pressure stripping of
atomic gas from the disk periphery cannot fully explain the observed gas
component ratios. The additional environmental factors affecting the
interstellar medium and leading to an increase in the molecular gas fraction
should be taken into account for cluster galaxies.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
The Psychosis of Whiteness: The celluloid hallucinations of Amazing Grace and Belle
Critical Whiteness studies has emerged as an academic discipline that has produced a lot of work and garnered attention in the last two decades. Central to this project is the idea that if the processes of Whiteness can be uncovered, then they can be reasoned with and overcome, through rationale dialogue. This article will argue, however, that Whiteness is a process rooted in the social structure, one that induces a form of psychosis framed by its irrationality, which is beyond any rational engagement. Drawing on a critical discourse analysis of the two only British big budget movies about transatlantic slavery, Amazing Grace and Belle, the article argues that such films serve as the celluloid hallucinations that reinforce the psychosis of Whiteness. The features of this discourse that arose from the analysis included the lack of Black agency, distancing Britain from the horrors of slavery, and downplaying the role of racism
The Alleged Crisis and the Illusion of Exact Replication
There has been increasing criticism of the way psychologists conduct and analyze studies. These critiques as well as failures to replicate several high-profile studies have been used as justification to proclaim a "replication crisis" in psychology. Psychologists are encouraged to conduct more "exact" replications of published studies to assess the reproducibility of psychological research. This article argues that the alleged "crisis of replicability" is primarily due to an epistemological misunderstanding that emphasizes the phenomenon instead of its underlying mechanisms. As a consequence, a replicated phenomenon may not serve as a rigorous test of a theoretical hypothesis because identical operationalizations of variables in studies conducted at different times and with different subject populations might test different theoretical constructs. Therefore, we propose that for meaningful replications, attempts at reinstating the original circumstances are not sufficient. Instead, replicators must ascertain that conditions are realized that reflect the theoretical variable(s) manipulated (and/or measured) in the original study
