PBL is one of the best ways to promote self-learning and simultaneously boost motivation. In this paper, we present our experience introducing project-based learning in the last year subject. New Internet of Things (IoT) topic allows us to carry out complete projects, integrating different technologies and tools. Moreover, the selection of open-source and standard free technologies makes easy and cheap the access to hardware and software platforms used. We carefully have picked communication, data management, and programming tools that we think would be attractive to our students. They can start making fast prototyping with little initial skills and, at the same time, these are serious and popular tools widely used in the industry. In this paper, we report on the design of a project-based learning for our course and the impact this has on the student satisfaction and motivation. Surveys taught us that tuning the courses towards developing real projects on the field, has a large impact on acceptance, learning objectives achievements and motivation towards the course content.”I Plan Propio Integral de Docencia de la Universidad de Málaga” y Proyecto de Innovación Educativa PIE17/085, de la Universidad de Málaga. Time Series Heterogeneous Co-execution on CPU+GPU

    Get PDF
Time series motif (similarities) and discords discovery is one of the most important and challenging problems nowadays for time series analytics. We use an algorithm called “scrimp” that excels in collecting the relevant information of time series by reducing the computational complexity of the searching. Starting from the sequential algorithm we develop parallel alternatives based on a variety of scheduling policies that target different computing devices in a system that integrates a CPU multicore and an embedded GPU. These policies are named Dynamic -using Intel TBB- and Static -using C++11 threads- when targeting the CPU, and they are compared to a heterogeneous adaptive approach named LogFit -using Intel TBB and OpenCL- when targeting the co-execution on the CPU and GPU.Universidad de Málaga. Gastric Perforation and Phlegmon Formation by Foreign Body Ingestion

    Get PDF
This is a case report of foreign body ingestion in a suicide attempt resulting in gastric perforation and phlegmon formation during a subsequent 6 month period that eventually required surgical intervention. The patient had a prolonged course because she did not report a history of foreign body ingestion and the initial evaluating physicians had no suspicion about possible foreign body ingestion and may have missed important findings on physical examination. Gastric perforation by a foreign object  may have a slow course rather than presenting acute abdomen. The realization of a proper physical examination in the emergency department is key to an accurate diagnosis

Dual phase steels become more important every day due to the good combination of mechanical properties that offer the automotive industry being the main application, the combination of ferrite and martensite microstructure are responsible for producing changes in their mechanical properties. For this study, an AISI/SAE 1045 steel treated from intercritical temperatures which are ferrite and austenite and rapid cooling to make the martensite becomes used. The fractions of each phase vary with increasing temperature from which the treatment is performed. For these ratios the ASTM 562 standard was used, various microstructural analysis and hardness tests were performed. Upon water quenching and subsequent tempering from different temperatures in the intercritical range, it was found that in certain ranges had a substantial change in the analyzed properties after quenching tempering was performed 550 ºC with times of 1, 2 and 4 hours, the metallographic show significant variation in the volume fraction of martensite, while the oil tempering the material showed the typical structure of a dual phase steel, where even in some cases the appearance of pearlite was evident

Approximately one-third of all annual food production in the world is lost or wasted. This supposes a serious problem for the society in which we live since it aspires to a circular economy model. Compost appears as a possible solution to palliate this problem, which helps take advantage of the nutrients from organic waste to convert them into fertilizer for plants. Sometimes, unbalance of the parameters in the composting process produces poor quality compost. In this work, an IoT system has been developed to monitor in real time the temperature and humidity of a compost pile at different heights to help obtain the best quality of the compost. Fengycin and the amyloid TasA of Bacillus subtilis stimulates the growth and immunization of plants by targeting the seed storages

    Get PDF
Beneficial microbes are known to stimulate the germination of the seeds; however, the exact mechanisms mediating these interactions are only beginning. Bacillus subtilis is a commonly detected member of the plant holobiont and provides multifaceted traits to the plant health. In this work, we demonstrated that B. subtilis triggered genetic and physiological responses in seeds that resulted in changes in the metabolic and developmental status of adult plants. A multidisciplinary approach based on microscopy, transcriptomics and metabolomics demonstrated that the chemically diverse extracellular matrix of Bacillus structurally cooperate in bacterial colonization of the seed storage tissues. The amyloid protein TasA and fengycin, two components of the extracellular matrix differentially stimulated levels of ROS inside seeds after imbibition and targeted the oil bodies of the seed endosperm, provoking specific changes in lipid metabolism or accumulation of glutathione-related molecules that resulted in two different plant growth programs: the development of seed radicles or major growth and immunization of adult plants. Our findings prove the versatility of the bacterial ECM in establishing a mutualistic interaction with plants.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

From bacterial antagonism to co-existence: the chemical interplay and adaptative strategies between Pseudomonas and Bacillus

    Get PDF
Bacterial communities are continuously adapting and evolving for survival. They produce and secrete a broad range of molecules that kill, defend, or mediate communication between cells of different lineages, thus shaping the final structure of the microbial community. In this work, with the combination of -omics approaches, molecular biology and microscopic techniques, we expand our knowledge on the chemical interplay and specific mutations that modulate the transition from antagonism to co-existence between two plant-beneficial bacteria, Pseudomonas chlororaphis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. We demonstrate that bacillaene, a secondary metabolite with bacteriostatic activity produced by Bacillus, interacts with the protein elongation factor FusA of P. chlororaphis to arrest its growth and population advancement. Point mutations in this protein lead to tolerance to bacillaene and other inhibitors of protein translation. Additionally, we describe the key role of the glycerol kinase GlpK from B. amyloliquefaciens in its unspecific tolerance against P. chlororaphis. Mutations in GlpK provoked by a decrease of Bacillus cell membrane permeability among other pleiotropic responses. We conclude that nutrient specialization and mutations in basic biological functions are bacterial adaptive dynamics that lead to the coexistence of two primary competitive bacterial species rather than their mutual eradication.Universidad de Málaga.
