    On the Cauchy problem for a nonlinearly dispersive wave equation

    We establish the local well-posedness for a new nonlinearly dispersive wave equation and we show that the equation has solutions that exist for indefinite times as well as solutions which blowup in finite times.     The Air Microwave Yield (AMY) experiment - A laboratory measurement of the microwave emission from extensive air showers

    The AMY experiment aims to measure the microwave bremsstrahlung radiation (MBR) emitted by air-showers secondary electrons accelerating in collisions with neutral molecules of the atmosphere. The measurements are performed using a beam of 510 MeV electrons at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) of Frascati INFN National Laboratories. The goal of the AMY experiment is to measure in laboratory conditions the yield and the spectrum of the GHz emission in the frequency range between 1 and 20 GHz. The final purpose is to characterise the process to be used in a next generation detectors of ultra-high energy cosmic rays.     Cheating, incentives, and money manipulation

    We use different incentive schemes to study truth-telling in a die-roll task when people are asked to reveal the number rolled privately. We find no significant evidence of cheating when there are no financial incentives associated with the reports, but do find evidence of such when the reports determine financial gains or losses (in different treatments). We find no evidence of loss aversion in the standard case in which subjects receive their earnings in a sealed envelope at the end of the session. When subjects manipulate the possible earnings, we find evidence of less cheating, particularly in the loss setting; in fact, there is no significant difference in behavior between the non-incentivized case and the loss setting with money manipulation. We interpret our findings in terms of the moral cost of cheating and differences in the perceived trust and beliefs in the gain and the loss frames

    A synthetic peptide from transforming growth factor beta type III receptor inhibits liver fibrogenesis in rats with carbon tetrachloride liver injury

    Transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) is a pleiotropic cytokine, which displays potent profibrogenic effects and is highly expressed in fibrotic livers. For this reason, development of TGF-B1 inhibitors might be of great importance to control liver fibrogenesis as well as other undesired side effects due to this cytokine. Potential peptide inhibitors of TGF-beta1 (derived from TGF-beta1 and from its type III receptor) were tested in vitro and in vivo using different assays. Peptides P11 and P12, derived from TGF-beta1, and P54 and P144, derived from its type III receptor, prevented TGF-beta1-dependent inhibition of MV1Lu proliferation in vitro and markedly reduced binding of TGF-beta1 to its receptors. P144 blocked TGF-beta1-dependent stimulation of a reporter gene under the control of human alpha2(I) collagen promoter. Intraperitoneal administration of P144 also showed potent antifibrogenic activity in vivo in the liver of rats receiving CCl4. These rats also showed a significant decrease in the number of activated hepatic stellate cells as compared with those treated with saline only. These results suggest that short synthetic peptides derived from TGF-beta1 type III receptor may be of value in reducing liver fibrosis in chronic liver injury

    Language and cultural capital in school experience of Polish children in Scotland

    This article addresses the complex relationship between migration and education in the context of recent intra-European labour mobility. It considers how this mobility impacts the education and life chances of migrant students attending schools in Scotland, UK. By examining the experiences of Polish migrant children and youth at schools in Scotland, the article engages with the issues of language, cultural capital transferability and social positioning. Drawing on qualitative data from 65 in-depth interviews with school children aged 5–17 years, their parents and teachers, as well as observations in the contexts of school and home, the article points to a range of factors affecting the transition of migrant pupils to new schools and social environments
