    Robustness of reserve selection procedures under temporal species turnover

    Complementarity-based algorithms for the selection of reserve networks emphasize the need to represent biodiversity features efficiently, but this may not be sufficient to maintain those features in the long term. Here, we use data from the Common Birds Census in Britain as an exemplar data set to determine guidelines for the selection of reserve networks which are more robust to temporal turnover in features. The extinction patterns found over the 1981-1991 interval suggest that two such guidelines are to represent species in the best sites where they occur (higher local abundance) and to give priority to the rarer species. We tested five reserve selection strategies, one which finds the minimum representation set and others which incorporate the first or both guidelines proposed. Strategies were tested in terms of their efficiency (inversely related to the total area selected) and effectiveness (inversely related to the percentage of species lost) using data on eight pairs of ten-year intervals. The minimum set strategy was always the most efficient, but suffered higher species loss than the others, suggesting that there is a trade-off between efficiency and effectiveness. A desirable compromise can be achieved by embedding the concerns about the long-term maintenance of the biodiversity features of interest in the complementarity-based algorithms

    Machine learning to identify olive-tree cultivars

    The identification of olive-tree cultivars is a lengthy and expensive process, therefore, the proposed work presents a new strategy for identifying different cultivars of olive trees using their leaf and machine learning algorithms. In this initial case, four autochthonous cultivars of the Trás-os-Montes region in Portugal are identified (Cobrançosa, Madural, Negrinha e Verdeal). With the use of this type of algorithm, it is expected to replace the previous techniques, saving time and resources for farmers.     Dietary sugars analysis: quantification of fructooligossacharides during fermentation by HPLC-RI method

    In this work, a simple chromatographic method is proposed and in-house validated for the quantification of total and individual fructooligossacharides (e.g., 1-kestose, nystose, and 1F-fructofuranosylnystose). It was shown that a high-performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detector could be used to monitor the dynamic of fructooligossacharides production via sucrose fermentation using Aspergillus aculeatus. This analytical technique may be easily implemented at laboratorial or industrial scale for fructooligossacharides mass-production monitoring allowing also controlling the main substrate (sucrose) and the secondary by-products (glucose and fructose). The proposed chromatographic method had a satisfactory intra- and inter-day variability (in general, with a relative standard deviation lower than 5%), high sensitivity for each sugar (usually, with a relative error lower than 5%), and low detection (lower than 0.06 ± 0.04 g/L) and quantification (lower than 0.2 ± 0.1 g/L) limits. The correct quantification of fructooligossacharides in fermentative media may allow a more precise nutritional formulation of new functional foods, since it is reported that different fructooligossacharides exhibit different biological activities and effects.This work was partially co-financed by FCT and FEDER under Program COMPETE (Project PEst-C/EQB/LA0020/2013), by the Strategic Project PEst-OE/EQB/LA0023/2013 and by the project ref.     An unusual cause of myocardial infarction

    Copyright © 2019 European Society of CardiologyBackground: In order to direct the treatment it, is well established that is fundamental to clarify the aetiology of heart failure and the cause of myocardial infarction (MI) with non obstructive coronary artery disease (MINOCA), with CMR being one of the methods of choice in both clinical situations. Case report: A 70 years-old male patient was admitted in our emergency department with complaints of irregular palpitations, progressive dyspnoea and fatigue on exertion, with two weeks of evolution; these symptoms were associated to retrosternal chest pain in the last twelve hours. He had a previous medical history of dyslipidemia, no other cardiovascular risk factors were known. On admission, his heart rate was 130bpm, with an irregularly irregular pulse and the pulmonary auscultation revealed bibasal crackles. The remaining physical examination was unremarkable. The ECG showed an atrial fibrillation rhythm, with a mild ST elevation and T wave inversion in inferior leads. The echocardiogram revealed a diffuse hypokinesia of left ventricle with an ejection fraction of 35-40%. The lab tests documented an elevation of troponin (hs-TnT 210ng/L) and NTproBNP (1945pg/ml).     Biosynthesis of antioxidant xanthan gum by Xanthomonas campestris using substrates added with moist olive pomace

    Moist olive pomace (MOP) is a high moisture content by-product of the olive oil industry. Managing this recalcitrant residue (transport, storage, and drying) is a priority demanding investment in finding alternative valorisation routes. In this context, the biosynthesis of xanthan gum (XG) incorporating MOP in the substrate (0.0 %, 5.0 %, 10.0 %, 15.0 %, 20.0 %, 25.0 %, 30.0 % and 50.0 %) to induce bacterial stress was attempted. XG biosynthesis yield was quantified, and the product was characterised by structural analysis (FTIR), thermal behaviour (TG), rheology and antioxidant capacity. Relative to the control (sample with no added MOP), a significant increase in XG biosynthesis was found for concentrations up to 30.0 % MOP. In particular, for XG produced with 15 % MOP, a 50.91 % (p < 0.0001) increase was achieved, together with 395.78 % for viscosity. In general, XG produced with MOP presence showed antioxidant activity, a value-added property, especially for applications in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic areas. The results indicated that the stress imposed by the MOP induced a microbial response leading to XG production increase, structural and viscosity modifications, and antioxidant properties incorporation.     Heterotopic autotransplantation of ovarian tissue in a large animal model: Effects of cooling and VEGF.

    Heterotopic and orthotopic ovarian tissue autotransplantation techniques, currently used in humans, will become promising alternative methods for fertility preservation in domestic and wild animals. Thus, this study describes for the first time the efficiency of a heterotopic ovarian tissue autotransplantation technique in a large livestock species (i.e., horses) after ovarian fragments were exposed or not to a cooling process (4°C/24 h) and/or VEGF before grafting. Ovarian fragments were collected in vivo via an ultrasound-guided biopsy pick-up method and surgically autografted in a subcutaneous site in both sides of the neck in each mare. The blood flow perfusion at the transplantation site was monitored at days 2, 4, 6, and 7 post-grafting using color-Doppler ultrasonography. Ovarian grafts were recovered 7 days post-transplantation and subjected to histological analyses. The exposure of the ovarian fragments to VEGF before grafting was not beneficial to the quality of the tissue; however, the cooling process of the fragments reduced the acute hyperemia post-grafting. Cooled grafts compared with non-cooled grafts contained similar values for normal and developing preantral follicles, vessel density, and stromal cell apoptosis; lower collagen type III fibers and follicular density; and higher stromal cell density, AgNOR, and collagen type I fibers. In conclusion, VEGF exposure before autotransplantation did not improve the quality of grafted tissues. However, cooling ovarian tissue for at least 24 h before grafting can be beneficial because satisfactory rates of follicle survival and development, stromal cell survival and proliferation, as well as vessel density, were obtained
