    The global study of atmospheric aerosol is one of the key factors in regards to climate change and those effects. Over the last 4 years a strong research work on aerosols properties characterization have been carried out into the Atmospheric Optics Group of the University of Valladolid (GOA-UVa) in Spain. We present the results about aerosol absorption coefficient measurements with two different techniques: the “integrating sphere photometer” and the particle soot absorption photometer (PSAP, Radiance Research). This data was acquired into the summer campaign 2008, made at north of Norway, like a result of the participation in-situ of GOA in the POLARCAT project, lead by the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, and included in the Fourth International Polar Year. Both methods are filter based and provide measurements that could be combined with optical column measurements for a better characterization of local aerosol. It contributes especially to the investigation of pollution events and to establishment the effects of the population over any local aerosol climatology. Based on this research background and the affordable and reliable instrumentation described in this work, the research can continue in Colombia in close collaborations with Spanish research groups.El estudio de los aerosoles atmosféricos a nivel mundial, es uno de los factores clave para entender el cambio climático y sus efectos. En los últimos 4 años, el Grupo de Óptica Atmosférica de la Universidad de Valladolid (GOA-UVa, España), ha venido realizando un importante trabajo de investigación respecto de la caracterización de las propiedades de los aerosoles. En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de las mediciones del coeficiente de absorción debida a los aerosoles con dos técnicas distintas: el fotómetro de esfera integrante y el fotómetro de absorción PSAP (Radiance Research). Estos datos fueron obtenidos durante la campaña de verano 2008 realizada al norte de Noruega, como resultado de la participación del GOA-UVa en el proyecto POLARCAT, dirigido por el Instituto Noruego para la investigación del aire y que está incluido en el cuarto año Polar Internacional. Los dos métodos utilizados están basados en las medidas sobre filtros y proporcionan medidas in situ que pueden ser combinadas con medidas sobre la columna atmosférica, para una mejor caracterización de los aerosoles locales. Este estudio contribuye especialmente a la investigación de los eventos de polución y en el establecimiento de los efectos de la población sobre la climatología local de aerosoles. Teniendo como base estos antecedentes de investigación y, la posibilidad de adquirir la asequible y fiable instrumentación descrita en este trabajo, la investigación puede continuar en Colombia en estrecha colaboración con los grupos de investigación españoles.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Se realizó un estudio con descriptores morfológicos cualitativos y cuantitativos en plantas de Arracacia xanthorrhiza Bancr. provenientes de tres localidades de la provincia de Tungurahua, Ecuador: municipios de Baños, Tisaleo y Pillaro y se estableció que, de acuerdo al análisis de los componentes principales, los tres primeros componentes explican más del 75% de la variación total. Se pudo diferenciar con claridad los materiales de las tres localidades, especialmente por el color de sus estructuras vegetativas

    Unravelling molecular responses to moderate dehydration in harvested fruit of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) using a fruit-specific ABA-deficient mutant

    Water stress affects many agronomic traits that may be regulated by the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA). Within these traits, loss of fruit quality becomes important in many citrus cultivars that develop peel damage in response to dehydration. To study peel dehydration transcriptional responsiveness in harvested citrus fruit and the putative role of ABA in this process, this study performed a comparative large-scale transcriptional analysis of water-stressed fruits of the wild-type Navelate orange (Citrus sinesis L. Osbeck) and its spontaneous ABA-deficient mutant Pinalate, which is more prone to dehydration and to developing peel damage. Major changes in gene expression occurring in the wild-type line were impaired in the mutant fruit. Gene ontology analysis revealed the ability of Navelate fruits to induce the response to water deprivation and di-, tri-valent inorganic cation transport biological processes, as well as repression of the carbohydrate biosynthesis process in the mutant. Exogenous ABA triggered relevant transcriptional changes and repressed the protein ubiquitination process, although it could not fully rescue the physiological behaviour of the mutant. Overall, the results indicated that dehydration responsiveness requires ABA-dependent and-independent signals, and highlight that the ability of citrus fruits to trigger molecular responses against dehydration is an important factor in reducing their susceptibility to developing peel damage.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (Research Grants AGL2006-09496, AGL2009-11969, and AGL2009-11558) and by the Generalitat Valenciana (PROMETEO/2010/010).     Effect of aquatic resistance interval training and dietary education program on physical and psychological health in older women: Randomized controlled trial

    Due to demographic changes, the world’s population is progressively aging. The physiological deterioration of the older adult may lead to reduced balance capacity and increased risk of falls, among others, due to the prevalence of degenerative diseases. Physical exercise can be effective in reducing the risk of disease and slowing functional decline in older people. The aim of the research is to test the effects of aquatic resistance training and dietary education on health indicators, strength, balance, functional autonomy, perception of satisfaction with life. Thirty-four participants aged 69 ± 4 years were randomly assigned into two groups: experimental (aquatic resistance interval training) and control group (no intervention). The intervention consisted of resistance training in an aquatic environment carried out for 14 weeks (three sessions per week: 60 min each). All variables were analyzed twice; pre - post intervention. Aquatic resistance training has positive effects on strength (p < 0.001), functional self-sufficiency (p < 0.001) and aerobic capacity (p < 0.001), however, no significant differences were observed in the perception of satisfaction with life and balance. Research results suggest that older women who engage in regular, scheduled aquatic resistance training have greater autonomy in performing activities of daily living, agility, gait control, and body composition variables (lower fat compartment and greater muscle mass)

    Electrochemical immunosensing of Growth arrest‐specific 6 in human plasma and tumor cell secretomes

    Growth arrest-specific 6 (GAS6) protein plays a key role in processes related toproliferation,inflammation,angiogenesis,andatheroscleroticplaqueformation.In addition, it has been reported that plasma levels of GAS6 are related to cancerprognosis and other relevant pathologies, such as heart failure or sepsis. Wereport here the first electrochemical immunoplatform for the determination ofGAS6, which has demonstrated to be competitive with other available method-ologies in terms of cost, simplicity, and decentralized application. The developedimmunoplatform involves a sandwich immunoassay using magnetic microparti-cles (MBs) and uses amperometric detection at disposable screen-printed carbonelectrodes (SPCEs). The MBs were modified with an antibody specific to GAS6for its selective capture, which is further recognized by a biotinylated secondaryantibody subsequently labeled with a streptavidin-horseradish peroxidase(Strep-HRP) conjugate. The electrochemical detection was carried out using thehydroquinone (HQ)/H2O2system.
