    Modeling and forecasting persistent financial durations

    This paper introduces the Markov-Switching Multifractal Duration (MSMD) model by adapting the MSM stochastic volatility model of Calvet and Fisher (2004) to the duration setting. Although the MSMD process is exponential ß-mixing as we show in the paper, it is capable of generating highly persistent autocorrelation. We study analytically and by simulation how this feature of durations generated by the MSMD process propagates to counts and realized volatility. We employ a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator of the MSMD parameters based on the Whittle approximation and establish its strong consistency and asymptotic normality for general MSMD specifications. We show that the Whittle estimation is a computationally simple and fast alternative to maximum likelihood. Finally, we compare the performance of the MSMD model with competing short- and long-memory duration models in an out-of-sample forecasting exercise based on price durations of three major foreign exchange futures contracts. The results of the comparison show that the MSMD and the Long Memory Stochastic Duration model perform similarly and are superior to the short-memory Autoregressive Conditional Duration models

    Consenso mexicano de la enfermedad por hígado graso no alcohólico

    Resumen: La enfermedad por hígado graso no alcohólico (EHGNA) afecta prácticamente a un tercio de la población mundial. México es uno de los países cuya población reúne varios factores de riesgo para esta enfermedad y su prevalencia podría superar el 50%; es por eso que el panorama a mediano plazo es muy pesimista si no se toman acciones inmediatas para contrarrestar lo que ya se considera un problema de salud nacional.De ahí el interés de la Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología y de la Asociación Mexicana de Hepatología para realizar el Consenso mexicano de EHGNA, en el cual se hizo una revisión actualizada y a fondo de temas como epidemiología, fisiopatología, formas clínicas, diagnóstico y tratamiento, con el objetivo de ofrecer al médico mexicano una herramienta útil para la prevención y el manejo de esta enfermedad.     Cortical Evolution: Introduction to the Reptilian Cortex

    Some 320 million years ago (MYA), the evolution of a protective membrane surrounding the embryo, the amnion, enabled vertebrates to develop outside water and thus invade new terrestrial niches. These amniotes were the ancestors of today's mammals and sauropsids (reptiles and birds). Present-day reptiles are a diverse group of more than 10,000 species that comprise the sphenodon, lizards, snakes, turtles and crocodilians. Although turtles were once thought to be the most "primitive" among the reptiles, current genomic data point toward two major groupings: the Squamata (lizards and snakes) and a group comprising both the turtles and the Archosauria (dinosaurs and modern birds and crocodiles). Dinosaurs inhabited the Earth from the Triassic (230 MYA), at a time when the entire landmass formed a single Pangaea. Dinosaurs flourished from the beginning of the Jurassic to the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous (65 MYA), and birds are their only survivors. What people generally call reptiles is thus a group defined in part by exclusion: it gathers amniote species that are neither mammals nor birds, making the reptiles technically a paraphyletic grouping. Despite this, the so-defined reptiles share many evolutionary, anatomical, developmental, physiological (e.g., ectothermia), and functional features. It is thus reasonable to talk about a "reptilian brain.
