‘Otros reyes de la su casa onde él venían’: Metáforas, diagramas y figuras en la historiografía castellana (1282-1332)

Tras la muerte de Alfonso X, se constata en el entorno de los monarcas castellanos la presencia recurrente de una serie de imágenes –reales o mentales– que reformulan ciertas metáforas cardinales para el imaginario del parentesco en Occidente. El análisis de estas obras –galerías regias sobre diversos soportes, compendios historiográficos, emblemas heráldicos– deja ver las tensiones políticas y familiares provocadas por el pleito sucesorio, poniendo de manifiesto también el papel de las imágenes como elementos articuladores del relato historiográfico y la memoria dinástica.In the decades after the death of Alfonso X, the kings and queens of Castile seem to have been surrounded by a variegated series of images –either real objects or mental pictures– generated around several key metaphors for the Western imagery of kinship. In these works –painted or sculpted galleries of kings, historiographical texts, heraldic emblems– political and family tensions arise, revealing also the role played by images in the articulation of historical narratives and dynastic memory

Partiendo del ejemplo proporcionado por la Crónica Troyana de Alfonso Xl (Escorial, h.I.6), se ofrece una reflexión sobre el papel de las imágenes en tanto que mediadoras en la construcción de temporalidades y espacialidades. Las imágenes condicionan no sólo la percepción del texto sino también la propia visualización del pasado. Esta circunstancia permite establecer un paralelismo entre su función en el contexto de la lectura medieval y en el de la práctica histórica actual, con la noción de anacronismo como hilo conductor.: The purpose of this artiele is to offer an inquiry on location and mediation, trying to analyze the role of images in thinking about history and place. The miniatures of the Crónica Troyana de Alfonso Xl (Escorial, h.I.6) allow us to reflect upon the way they shape a concrete perception of the text and also a very idea of past and its meanings. The notion of anachronism links both the medieval refiguration of past and our own, and poses compelling questions about the ethics of historical writing

La tumba erigida por Alvaro de Luna en su capilla de la Catedral de Toledo fue destruida ya en vida del Maestre. La trascendencia del personaje efigiado, las especiales características del monumento y su violenta desaparición, influyeron en la gestación, a partir del siglo xvii, de toda una tradición legendaria que ha condicionado hasta hoy el estudio de la tumba. El análisis riguroso de las fuentes textuales permite reconstruir el aspecto originario del sepulcro y el impacto que causó en sus contemporáneos.The particular circumstances that surrounded both the erection and the destruction of Alvaro de Luna's tomb, when he was still alive, generated a legendary history about it. However, the analysis of the written sources allows us to consider again the questions related to its original disposition and reception.</p

Plasma lipid profiles discriminate bacterial from viral infection in febrile children

Fever is the most common reason that children present to Emergency Departments. Clinical signs and symptoms suggestive of bacterial infection are often non-specific, and there is no definitive test for the accurate diagnosis of infection. The 'omics' approaches to identifying biomarkers from the host-response to bacterial infection are promising. In this study, lipidomic analysis was carried out with plasma samples obtained from febrile children with confirmed bacterial infection (n = 20) and confirmed viral infection (n = 20). We show for the first time that bacterial and viral infection produces distinct profile in the host lipidome. Some species of glycerophosphoinositol, sphingomyelin, lysophosphatidylcholine and cholesterol sulfate were higher in the confirmed virus infected group, while some species of fatty acids, glycerophosphocholine, glycerophosphoserine, lactosylceramide and bilirubin were lower in the confirmed virus infected group when compared with confirmed bacterial infected group. A combination of three lipids achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.911 (95% CI 0.81 to 0.98). This pilot study demonstrates the potential of metabolic biomarkers to assist clinicians in distinguishing bacterial from viral infection in febrile children, to facilitate effective clinical management and to the limit inappropriate use of antibiotics
