Gauss rules associated with nearly singular weights

We consider the problem of evaluating View the MathML source, when f is smooth and G is nearly singular and non-negative. For this we construct a Gauss quadrature formula w.r.t. the weight G(x)(1−x2)−1/2. Once the factor G has been chosen, the procedure is relatively simple and mainly involves the application of FFT to compute a finite number of coefficients of the Chebyshev series expansion of G which in turn are used to calculate modified moments. It is shown that this approach is very effective when the complexity of f is high, or when f is parametric and the integral must be calculated for many values of the parameters. For this, there is presented a selection of numerical examples which allows comparison with other methods. In particular, there is considered the evaluation of Hadamard finite part integrals when the regular part of the integrand is nearly singular.

BodyJump® is a discipline that has broken out strongly in recent years in fitness centers. However, there is no evidence to support its use as an effective and safe program for improving fitness and health. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyze the effect of a short-term BodyJump® program on fitness and health. A total of three sedentary adult women (age: 23 years, 55.3 ± 2.8 kg, 161.3 ± 7.1 cm) completed this case study undergoing a BodyJump® program for four weeks. A total of 17 measures of fitness and health and two measures related to symptoms of Achilles and patellar tendon were defined as dependent variables. The effect of the BodyJump® program on the dependent variables was determined through the statistical effect size. A small effect size (d = 0.5-1.25) was found in measures related to trunk musculature strength and endurance, power of countermovement vertical jump and dynamic balance. For the rest of physical and health measures, a trivial or non-relevant change was observed after the intervention (d <0.5). The findings of the current study report that a short BodyJump® program could be considered an efficient activity for improving trunk muscle strength, endurance, and dynamic balance in sedentary young-adult women.

Perinatal HCV Transmission Rate in HIV/HCV Coinfected women with access to ART in Madrid, Spain.

BACKGROUND:Maternal HIV coinfection is a key factor for mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HCV. However, data about HCV MTCT in HIV/HCV-coinfected pregnant women on combined antiretroviral treatment (ART) are scarce. This study assessed the HCV MTCT rate in the Madrid Cohort of HIV-infected women. METHODS:Retrospective study within the Madrid Cohort of HIV-infected pregnant women (2000-2012). Epidemiological, clinical and treatment related variables were analysed for the mother and infant pairs. HCV MTCT rate was determined. RESULTS:Three hundred thirty-nine HIV/HCV-coinfected women and their exposed infants were recorded. A total of 227 (67%) paired mother-children had available data of HCV follow-up and were included for the analysis. Sixteen children (rate 7.0%, 95%CI 3.7-10.4%) were HCV infected by 18 months of age, none of them coinfected with HIV. HIV/HCV-coinfected pregnant women were mostly of Spanish origin with a background of previous injection drug use. HCV-genotype 1 was predominant. The characteristics of mothers that transmitted HCV were similar to those that did not transmit HCV with respect to sociodemographic and clinical features. A high rate (50%) of preterm deliveries was observed. Infants infected with HCV were similar at birth in weight, length and head circumference than those uninfected. CONCLUSION:MTCT rates of HCV among HIV/HCV-coinfected women on ART within the Madrid cohort were lower than previously described. However, rates are still significant and strategies to eliminate any HCV transmission from mother to child are needed

The genetic variant rs72824905-G (minor allele) in the PLCG2 gene was previously associated with a reduced Alzheimer’s disease risk (AD). The role of PLCG2 in immune system signaling suggests it may also protect against other neurodegenerative diseases and possibly associates with longevity. We studied the effect of the rs72824905-G on seven neurodegenerative diseases and longevity, using 53,627 patients, 3,516 long-lived individuals and 149,290 study-matched controls. We replicated the association of rs72824905-G with reduced AD risk and we found an association with reduced risk of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We did not find evidence for an effect on Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) risks, despite adequate sample sizes. Conversely, the rs72824905-G allele was associated with increased likelihood of longevity. By-proxy analyses in the UK Biobank supported the associations with both dementia and longevity. Concluding, rs72824905-G has a protective effect against multiple neurodegenerative diseases indicating shared aspects of disease etiology. Our findings merit studying the PLCγ2 pathway as drug-target.Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatic
