Detection of Geothermal Potential Zones Using Remote Sensing Techniques

    Get PDF
21 p.The transition towards a new sustainable energy model—replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources—presents a multidisciplinary challenge. One of the major decarbonization issues is the question of to optimize energy transport networks for renewable energy sources. Within the range of renewable energies, the location and evaluation of geothermal energy is associated with costly processes, such as drilling, which limit its use. Therefore, the present research is aimed at applying different geomatic techniques for the detection of geothermal resources. The workflow is based on free/open access geospatial data. More specifically, remote sensing information (Sentinel-2A and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER)), geological information, distribution of gravimetric anomalies, and geographic information systems have been used to detect areas of shallow geothermal potential in the northwest of the province of Orense, Spain. Due to the variety of parameters involved, and the complexity of the classification, a random forest classifier was employed, since this algorithm works well with large sets of data and can be used with categorical and numerical data. The results obtained allowed identifying a susceptible area to be operated on with a geothermal potential of 80 W·m−1 or higherS

Analysis of the start to the first hurdle in 110m hurdles at the IAAF World Athletics Championships Beijing 2015

The purpose of this study was to use observational analysis to evaluate the relationships between variables measured at the start of the men’s 110 hurdles event and race performance itself. Data were obtained for competitors in 2015 IAAF World Athletics Ch ampionships, in Beijing, China. The athletes’ start was quantified by reaction time and time to the first hurdle; their action over the first hurdle was quantified by the take - off distance (i.e., the distance from the last step to the first hurdle), the la nding distance, and the total distance in the air over the first hurdle. Regression analyses revealed that the combination of one measure of the start (either reaction time or time to the first hurdle) and the measure of propulsion over the first hurdle (d istance in air over the first hurdle) predicted performance (SEE = 0.23 s in the heats, SEE = 0.16 s in the semi - finals, SEE = 0.09 s in the finals). In addition, looking at performances in the finals, where all athletes with available data used a seven - st ep approach to the first hurdle, inclusion of stride length data improved the prediction somewhat (SEE = 0.07 s). The results demonstrate that a combination of a fast start, rapid acceleration, and strong drive over the first hurdle quantifiably explains a nd contributes to performance in the men’s 110 m hurdles at the highest level

Functional supramolecular tetrathiafulvalene-based films with mixed valences states

Tetrathiafulvalene molecules substituted with a carboxylic acid group (TTFCOOH) were bound as redox-active moieties into a poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) skeleton through non-covalent interactions (hydrogen bonds). The aspect of the resulting P4VP-TTFCOOH films showed a uniform and smooth morphology. Moreover, the redox function of TTFCOOH in P4VP-TTFCOOH was demonstrated using tetrachloroauric acid, iron(III) perchlorate and iodine vapors as doping agents. The oxidized states of TTFCOOH as well as the mixed valance state TTFCOOH0-TTFCOOH+• were generated in a controlled manner in solid state, resulting in an organic film capable of charge transport. The charge transport along the organic donor molecules hydrogen bonded to the polymer matrix was demonstrated employing Electrostatic Force Microscopy (EFM)Postprint (author's final draft

I.[Abstract] We develop a conceptual framework that allows students to develop specific competencies in the field of Strategic Management and Company Policies. To do this, and using as a starting point the competences established in the degree program in Business Administration and Management of the University of A Coruña, we present a diagram of the dynamics of the teaching-learning process, including aspects of the educational context and the student's own motivation. The final goal of this framework is to allow a better planning of tasks focused on the development of students competences. This experience has allowed to understand the strategic analysis and business formulation of 135 companies-case, involving students in the solution of problems of their business environment, which is a key objective of the discipline of Strategic Management and Business Policy I

Learning block memories with metric networks

An attractor neural network on the small-world topology is studied. A learning pattern is presented to the network, then a stimulus carrying local information is applied to the neurons and the retrieval of block-like structure is investigated. A synaptic noise decreases the memory capability. The change of stability from local to global attractors is shown to depend on the long-range character of the network connectivity. This work was supported by TIN 2004-04363-CO03-03, TIN 2007-65989 and CAM S-SEM-0255-2006

Synthesis of 5-/8-Halogenated or Ethynylated Lipophilic Nucleobases as Potential Synthetic Intermediates for Supramolecular Chemistry

This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: European Journal of Organic Chemistry 2015.32 (2015): 7160-7175, which has been published in final form at http://dx.doi.org/10486/10.1002/ejoc.201501026A series of lipophilic nucleobases that are substituted at the 5- (pyrimidines) or 8- (purines) position with either a halogen atom or a terminal triple bond have been synthesized. The sequences and reactions studied in this work, which mainly comprise halogenation, alkylation, Sonogashira coupling, and trimethylsilylacetylene deprotection, have been carefully optimized, to reach the final compounds in the most straightforward and convenient way, with the highest possible purity and yield. These compounds include cytosine, isocytosine, and uracil derivatives as pyrimidine heterocycles, and guanine, isoguanine, and 2-aminoadenine derivatives as complementary purine bases. Variability was introduced at the N-1/N-9 positions of these pyrimidine/purine nucleobases, which were functionalized with alkyl or benzyl groups, as well as with protected amine or carboxylic acid substituents. The molecules prepared constitute a useful collection of synthetic intermediates for the field of chemical self-assembly. Shaping ability of Mtwo and Twisted File rotary systems in curved root canals

    Get PDF
Objective: To compare the straightening of root canal curvature, the apical transportation, the loss of working length and the working time using two rotary systems. Study design: Sixty buccal root canals with angles of curvature between 30 to 99º were instrumented with Mtwo and Twisted File rotary instruments. A series of pre- and post-operative radiographs were superimposed to determine the straightening of root canal curvature and apical transportation. The loss of working length and working time were also calculated. Results: All data were analyzed by means of the Student´s t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. No statistically significant differences in the straightening of root canal curvature, apical transportation, or the loss of working length were found between groups. There was a significant difference in working time between angles of curvature when using the Mtwo system. Conclusion: Both rotary systems showed minimal changes in the original root canal curvature
