The way in which diversity is conveyed through the media can reflect the attitude of the communicators themselves and contribute to shaping society’s attitudes towards diversity. The aim of the study was to identify how diversity is conveyed by the University to the Society. A content analysis of diversity-related news items in the University’s Institutional Newspaper Journal of the Pablo de Olavide University (DUPO) (626 news items out of 3,186 published between 2016 and 2019, a full rector’s term) was conducted. Heterogeneity in diversity was identified: gender, functional, cultural, sexual, religious and age, with gender and functional or disability diversity being predominant. Dissemination of diversity was linked to the fields of social sciences, humanities and sport. Communicators were government teams, with a slightly larger role for women. In conclusion, the institutional communication of diversity carried out from the most common official communication channel of the university analysed is the majority compared to the actions of professors and researchers, and a heterogeneous conception of diversity was found, linking it to issues of gender, inequalities and violence

This work aims to reflect on the concept of social innovation, questioning its explanatory capacity for the discipline of social work. For this purpose, certain on-going debates with regard to this concept are examined and certain minimum dimensions are offered to enable an analysis of the social innovation strategies that certain affected groups implement to meet social needs. The approach is to construct «glasses» that permit an analytical engagement with new realities and with the strategies used by certain social groups to resolve situations of severe vulnerability. Finally, a case study is presented: a strategic group known as the Corrala Utopía that seeks to respond to severe housing problems and is developing in the city of Seville. The article highlights the elements of community social innovation emerging from the experience studied.

One of the difficulties in choosing the families who come to foster care is related to the lack of studies that indicate the features needed to support optimal integrated development of children in foster care and also help in the process both the family as the child to generate the necessary resources. The sample consisted of 53 families with 80 children in foster care for three years. The aim was to identify characteristics that allow promote the development of the child. The results underline the importance of establishing secure links between the child and the foster family, the integration of the child in the foster family (the emergence of a sense of belonging), the existence of children in the foster family and a sense of satisfaction with welcoming, by the foster family.peerReviewe

In the Ciénaga de Paredes (73 · 45'-73· 49'W y 7·26'-7·29'N), located in the Department of Santander (Colombia), the composition, and the spatial and temporal variation of the cladoceran community structure was determined with samples taken with a 68 μm vertical-hauled net, at eight sampling stations in an annual cycle (February 1998 to January 1999). To evaluate the structure, Hill numbers (N0, N1 and N2) and evenness were used. The sampling support was calculated with the Chao 1 and 2 estimators. The existence of significant differences for Hill numbers, evenness, numeric density, water column, pH, OD, and temperature among field trips and among stations, was analysed through an ANOVA. The species and morphospecies found (31), had a tropical, subtropical, and cosmopolitan distribution; belonging to temporary water bodies, floodplains or "ciénagas". The highest abundances were registered for Moina minuta, Moina cf. micrura, Diaphanosoma brevireme and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, which represented 81.9 % of the total collected individuals. The results obtained with the richness estimates suggest that if the sampling effort were increased using the same techniques, the morphospecies' number would have not increased. With regard to the structure's spatial variation, the station V showed higher evenness, richness, and diversity, but lower numeric density; this condition shows the difference between this station and the other ones; ical trend is explained by this station being near to the main tributary of the "Ciénaga" ("Quebrada La Gómez").Regarding the temporal variation, the cladocerans' community structure changed between field trips, since the evenness and the richness showed significant differences, reflected by the variation in the relative abundance of the morphospecies but not in the cladocerans' abundance. This was caused by the fluctuations in rainfall and water level

Dual encoding of muscle tension and eye position by abducens motoneurons

Extraocular muscle tension associated with spontaneous eye movements has a pulse-slide-step profile similar to that of motoneuron firing rate. Existing models only relate motoneuron firing to eye position, velocity and acceleration. We measured and quantitatively compared lateral rectus muscle force and eye position with the firing of abducens motoneurons in the cat to determine fundamental encoding correlations. During fixations (step), muscle force increased exponentially with eccentric eye position, consistent with a model of estimate ensemble motor innervation based on neuronal sensitivities and recruitment order. Moreover, firing rate in all motoneurons tested was better related to eye position than to muscle tension during fixations. In contrast, during the postsaccadic slide phase, the time constant of firing rate decay was closely related to that of muscle force decay, suggesting that all motoneurons encode muscle tension as well. Discharge characteristics of abducens motoneurons formed overlapping clusters of phasic and tonic motoneurons, thus, tonic units recruited earlier and had a larger slide signal. We conclude that the slide signal is a discharge characteristic of the motoneuron that controls muscle tension during the postsaccadic phase and that motoneurons are specialized for both tension and position-related properties. The organization of signal content in the pool of abducens motoneurons from the very phasic to the very tonic units is possibly a result of the differential trophic background received from distinct types of muscle fibers

Intergenerational programs and intergenerational contact zones: Aligning notions of ‘good quality

    Get PDF
This chapter focuses on the following question: How may we enhance good quality in Intergenerational Programs (IP) through the application of Intergenerational Contact Zones (ICZ) as programming tool? In this context, it is argued that it makes sense to align the introduction of good quality planning and implementation of IP with efforts to set up efficient ICZ. Consequently, the chapter exemplifies how this alignment may be made starting from two international models to incorporate quality features for IP: the Together Old and Young for Quality Program and the International Certificate in Intergenerational Learning Quality Standards. After careful analysis and combination of these models, four domains of IP quality are presented, and quality guidelines and indicators for both IP and ICZ as programming tool are listed accordingly. Despite some limitations, the chapter contributes to the development of ICZ through specifying 23 indicators for efficient ICZ as supportive settings for good quality IP

Axons Giving Rise to the Palisade Endings of Feline Extraocular Muscles Display Motor Features

Palisade endings are nerve specializations found in the extraocular muscles (EOMs) of mammals, including primates. They have long been postulated to be proprioceptors. It was recently demonstrated that palisade endings are cholinergic and that in monkeys they originate from the EOM motor nuclei. Nevertheless, there is considerable difference of opinion concerning the nature of palisade ending function. Palisade endings in EOMs were examined in cats to test whether they display motor or sensory characteristics. We injected an anterograde tracer into the oculomotor or abducens nuclei and combined tracer visualization with immunohistochemistry and α-bungarotoxin staining. Employing immunohistochemistry, we performed molecular analyses of palisade endings and trigeminal ganglia to determine whether cat palisade endings are a cholinergic trigeminal projection. We confirmed that palisade endings are cholinergic and showed, for the first time, that they, like extraocular motoneurons, are also immunoreactive for calcitonin gene-related peptide. Following tracer injection into the EOM nuclei, we observed tracer-positive palisade endings that exhibited choline acetyl transferase immunoreactivity. The tracer-positive nerve fibers supplying palisade endings also established motor terminals along the muscle fibers, as demonstrated by α-bungarotoxin. Neither the trigeminal ganglion nor the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve contained cholinergic elements. This study confirms that palisade endings originate in the EOM motor nuclei and further indicates that they are extensions of the axons supplying the muscle fiber related to the palisade. The present work excludes the possibility that they receive cholinergic trigeminal projections. These findings call into doubt the proposed proprioceptive function of palisade endings

Development of Gold Nanoparticle-Doped Activated Carbon Sorbent for Elemental Mercury

The control of mercury (Hg) from coal-fired power plants by adsorption in solid sorbents is an attractive way to reduce Hg emissions. In this study, a commercial activated carbon (Norit RB3) was impregnated with gold nanoparticles for the retention of Hg in the gas phase, with the intention to explore their potential to be regenerated in future investigations. The activated carbon (RB3) was impregnated with different gold contents using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) to compare the performance of these two methods. Gold particles of ∼5 nm were obtained in the carbonaceous support for low gold contents (0.1%). With comparative purposes of the sorbent behavior, the Hg0 retention capacity was evaluated in a lab-scale device in an O2 + N2 atmosphere. Although the Hg retention capacities of these sorbents were similar by the two methods, a higher efficiency was achieved with THPC, being in some cases 80%. The results showed that the use of THPC is a promising means for dropping gold (0.1%) to make carbonaceous sorbents for use in Hg capture. The authors thank the CSIC (PIF-06-050) and the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (CTQ2008-06860-C02-01) for financial support.Peer reviewe
