(Liquid + liquid) equilibria of polymer-salt aqueous two-phase systems for laccase partitioning : UCON 50-HB-5100 with potassium citrate and (sodium or potassium) formate at 23 ºC

Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) are recognized as very suitable techniques for the recovery of target solutes in biological applications. Three new phase diagrams of (UCON 50-HB-5100 + potassium citrate + water), (UCON 50-HB-5100 + sodium formate + water), and (UCON 50-HB-5100 + potassium formate + water) systems were measured at 23 C. The binodal curves were successfully described using the empirical equation suggested by Merchuk and co-workers. The reliability of the tie-line data experimentally determined was evaluated using the equations reported by Othmer–Tobias and Bancroft and satisfactory linearity was obtained for all ATPS. Among the salts studied, potassium citrate proved to be the most effective in ATPS formation, providing the largest heterogeneous region. Besides, the effect of both anions and cations in the size of the heterogeneous region and in the slope of the tie-lines has been compared. For the same salts and conditions, the heterogeneous region using UCON as the phase-forming polymer is larger than using polyethylene glycol. Furthermore, laccase partition in the UCON-salt ATPS was studied and it was found that in all cases enzyme partition occurred preferably to the bottom phase (salt-rich phase). Laccase concentration in the salt-rich phase was approximately 2-fold that in the top phase, thus UCON-salt ATPS can be a suitable biphasic system for laccase extraction. This work is supported by project PEst-C/EQB/LA0020/2011, financed by FEDER through COMPETE - Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade and by FCT - Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, Portugal. Combination of DROOL rules and Protégé knowledge bases in the ONTO-H annotation tool

    Get PDF
ONTO-H is a semi-automatic collaborative tool for the semantic annotation of documents, built as a Protégé 3.0 tab plug-in. Among its multiple functionalities aimed at easing the document annotation process, ONTO-H uses a rule-based system to create cascading annotations out from a single drag and drop operation from a part of a document into an already existing concept or instance of the domain ontology being used for annotation. It also gives support to the detection of name conflicts and instance duplications in the creation of the annotations. The rule system runs on top of the open source rule engine DROOLS and is connected to the domain ontology used for annotation by means of an ad-hoc programmed Java proxy

There are few reports on intracardiac fungal masses, especially in the pediatric population. We present the case of an extremely premature patient who, after being hospitalized since birth in an intensive care unit, developed fungal masses in the right atrium, which, due to their size, location and resistance to medical treatment, required surgical excision. For this reason, at the slightest suspicion of systemic candidiasis in pediatric patients, it is mandatory to include an echocardiogram in the defocalization examinations to rule out endocarditis and thus avoid the development of intracardiac fungal masses. Therefore, early detection for timely medical management may avoid the surgical approach associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality in extremely premature patients.

Lattice dynamics of Sb2Te3 at high pressures

We report an experimental and theoretical lattice dynamics study of antimony telluride (Sb 2Te 3) up to 26 GPa together with a theoretical study of its structural stability under pressure. Raman-active modes of the low-pressure rhombohedral (R-3m) phase were observed up to 7.7 GPa. Changes of the frequencies and linewidths were observed around 3.5 GPa where an electronic topological transition was previously found. Raman-mode changes evidence phase transitions at 7.7, 14.5, and 25GPa. The frequencies and pressure coefficients of the new phases above 7.7 and 14.5 GPa agree with those calculated for the monoclinic C2/m and C2/c structures recently observed at high pressures in Bi 2Te 3 and also for the C2/m phase in the case of Bi 2Se 3 and Sb 2Te 3. Above 25 GPa no Raman-active modes are observed in Sb 2Te 3, similarly to the case of Bi 2Te 3 and Bi 2Se 3. Therefore, it is possible that the structure of Sb 2Te 3 above 25 GPa is the same disordered bcc phase already found in Bi 2Te 3 by x-ray diffraction studies. Upon pressure release, Sb 2Te 3 reverts back to the original rhombohedral phase after considerable hysteresis. Raman- and IR-mode symmetries, frequencies, and pressure coefficients in the different phases are reported and discussed. © 2011 American Physical Society. This work has been done under financial support from Spanish MICINN under Project Nos. El flavonoide izalpinina se aisló de las partes aéreas de Chromolaena leivensis. The flavonoid izalpinin was isolated from the aerial parts of Chromolaena leivensis. Its structural determination was carried out using MS and NMR spectroscopic techniques (1H, 13C). This compound was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory effect in a rat model on -carrageenan-induced plantar edema. Paw inflammation was measured at one-hour intervals for seven hours following the administration of -carrageenan. Serum creatine kinase (CK) levels were evaluated, obtaining statistically significant results with the treatments at doses of 10 mg/kg (* p < 0.01) and 20 mg/kg (** p < 0.005). The anti-inflammatory effect of the compound was evaluated by using plethysmography, and the results showed significant differences at the three concentrations (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg) in the first and third hours after treatment. * p < 0.05; ** p < 0.001; **** p < 0.0001 vs. the negative control group treated with vehicle (DMSO). Lastly, molecular docking analyses reveal that izalpinin has a strong binding affinity with five target proteins involved in the inflammatory process. The analysis using molecular dynamics allowed demonstrating that the ligand–protein complexes present acceptable stability, with RMSD values within the allowed range

The interaction of a poly-functional ligand derived from o-vanillin and 2-thiophenemethylamine (oVATPNH2) with transition metal ions Cu(II) and Zn(II) leads to the formation of stable coordination compounds, namely [Cu(oVATPNH2)2] and [Zn(oVATPNH2)2]. Their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Two molecules of the deprotonated ligand acting in a bidentate fashion build a nearly square planar environment around Cu(II) and a distorted tetrahedral coordination arrangement for Zn(II). The complexes were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, including solid state FTIR, Raman, EPR and diffuse reflectance and solution UV-vis and EPR. Their thermal behavior has been analyzed by means of TGA and DTA. DFT theoretical studies, using computational methods based on DFT, were employed to assist the interpretation and assignment of spectroscopic data. Cytotoxicity assays against two human breast cancer cell lines, namely MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, revealed an enhancement of the effectiveness of the complexes as compared with both the ligand and the free metal ions. The results for the copper compound are promising, as its cytotoxic effect was stronger than the reference metallodrug cisplatin in both cancer cell lines tested.CONICET-CCT-La Plata (PIP 0651 and 0034), ANPCyT (PICT 2016-1574) and UNLP (11/X-473) (Argentina) and also by Consejerı´a de Educacio´n CyL and FFEDER BU076U16, BU022G18 and Ministerio de Economı´a y Competitividad CTQ2016-75023-C2-1-P and CTQ2015-70371- REDT MetDrugs Network (Spai

The crisis that is causing the disease called COVID-19 is severely affecting the health system of many countries, which require alternative measures to care this large number of patients who are not able to be treated at medical centers. This is the reason why home care is considered an alternative, for which it must be very rigorous with the care of the sick person, since if it is not done in a proper way, the other members of the family home are under risk of contamination, which would increase the saturation of the health system. Indications such as the stay of the patient in one place, the use of protective barriers when entering this area, or the constant sanitization of hands, among other measures, can lead to the success of this type of actions, favoring the prompt recovery of the patient and the preservation of the health of the other members at home.
