This paper studies the representation of the official memory about the Spanish Civil War in the newsreel NO-DO during the first period of Franco´s Regimen. It analyses the film features: which ideas were spread; which items showed them, and how the audiovisual language built the image of the crusade and, finally, justified it. In conclusion, we want to understand the particular and important contribution of the newsreel in order to impose this dominant memory to the society
Business Cycle and Speculative Pressures in a Target Zone
In the past time, most economies have suffered cyclical fluctuations in their activity which may influence the optimal use of productive factors in long slow-growth phases or price stability in periods of fast growth. This paper focuses on the possible interrelationship between business cycles and exchange rate ‡uctuations. We have chosen the European Monetary System framework in the nineties, from June 1989 to December 1998, because the Peseta belonged to the EMS during that time. This sample is specially interesting because it includes the worst crisis of the System in 1992-93 and the following ones affecting emerging countries like Mexico, Brazil or Russia at the end of the decade. We use a Binary Dependent Variable Logit Model to estimate the readjustment probability inside a band for two currencies, the Peseta and the french Franc . We calculate the dependent variable values from a Markov-Switching Regime Model with constant transition probabilities. We prove that it is a suitable method and that it allows both real and monetary variables to be identified in order to explain speculative pressures.Readjustment Probability, Speculative Pressures, Economic Fluctuations.
On track for solar grade silicon through a Siemens process-type laboratory reactor: operating conditions and energy savings
Polysilicon cost impacts significantly on the photovoltaics (PV) cost and on the energy payback time. Nowadays, the besetting production process is the so called Siemens process, polysilicon deposition by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from Trichlorosilane. Polysilicon purification level for PV is to a certain extent less demanding that for microelectronics. At the Instituto de Energía Solar (IES) research on this subject is performed through a Siemens process-type laboratory reactor. Through the laboratory CVD prototype at the IES laboratories, valuable information about the phenomena involved in the polysilicon deposition process and the operating conditions is obtained. Polysilicon deposition by CVD is a complex process due to the big number of parameters involved. A study on the influence of temperature and inlet gas mixture composition on the polysilicon deposition growth rate, based on experimental experience, is shown. Moreover, CVD process accounts for the largest contribution to the energy consumption of the polysilicon production. In addition, radiation phenomenon is the major responsible for low energetic efficiency of the whole process. This work presents a model of radiation heat loss, and the theoretical calculations are confirmed experimentally through a prototype reactor at our disposal, yielding a valuable know-how for energy consumption reduction at industrial Siemens reactorsPostprint (published version
The Cinema of apocalyptic landscape produced by Hollywood transcodes many features of the socio-political context marked by the 9/11 attacks. Specifically, those films have influenced the representation of one of the national icons in the US: the President himself. This paper explores the connection between the filmic portrait of the presidential institution, on the one hand, and the evolution in the approval rating to the jobs of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush on the other. The last two decades are the framework of this research, and it seeks to identify the contributions of a particular cinematographic genre to the critical depiction of this political figure.
[EN]In recent decades, illustration in children’s and young adults’ books has become especially important as a communicative and educational element. This has led to a proliferation of illustrated books and albums, as well as to an increase in the number of prizes and awards for them. This development has given the figure of the illustrator greater prominence and serves as an instrument for promotion and visibility, as well as a stimulus to production. Accordingly, the objective of this article is to set out the characteristics of Spanish children’s and young adults’ book awards focused on illustration within the 2000–2020 period, indicating their chronology, their organizers, the illustrators who have received the most awards, the thematic categories that are most commonly represented and the prize types and sums awarded to winners. To this end, a list of 103 Spanish children’s and young adults’ literature awards was compiled; 22 of these are specifically for illustration. The conclusion was reached that Spanish publishers are opting for illustrated books and albums that they themselves have produced. It was also found that such awards have consolidated over time, are normally of an institutional nature and offer small financial sums. Moreover, all kinds of thematic categories are represented in these awards, though fictional prose works clearly predominate, and within this category, awards most commonly go to illustrated albums
In the following paper we present the preliminary results obtained from the recent excavation of a public building from the ancient Roman Ilipa, nowadays Alcalá del Río (Seville). It offers an excellent conservation, -not only what corresponds to the preservation of the whole plan, but to the finishing materials and techniques of walls and pavement, that makes it an exceptional building in the province of Baetica and further, in whole Hispania. Its features make probable its identification as the curia of the Roman city, due to this it must be considered in a wider way as an example of a fundamental piece of the municipal life of the provincial cities
