Effects of E-Coaching During Mursionâą Simulations On the Occurrence and Variety of Behavior Specific Praise
We used a concurrent multiple-baseline research design replicated across participants to evaluate the effects of eCoaching on increasing the delivery and maintenance of behavior specific praise (BSP) in a mixed-reality Mursionâą classroom simulation. Participants consisted of four masterâs students in a special education program. Results showed noteworthy increases in the rate and percent participants gave BSP during the intervention condition. Additionally, praise variety increased in all participants, and high rates of BSP were observed as the intervention was faded and removed all together. Our study extends the extant literature on an emerging evidencebased practice (i.e., BSP) and helps validate eCoaching and an effective method for providing immediate feedback during Mursionâą classroom simulations
The Effects of Teacher-Delivered E-Coaching on Paraeducators and Students
Paraeducators play a vital role in providing special education services to students with disabilities, yet they often enter the classroom with inadequate training. Using a multiplebaseline across participants research design, we evaluated the effects of job-embedded bug-in-ear (BIE) coaching delivered to paraeducators on their use of behavior specific praise (BSP) while working 1:1 with transition-age students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Results showed all paraeducators used optimal rates of BSP during the intervention condition while receiving immediate feedback from the special education teacher (i.e., eCoach). High rates of BSP were sustained over time, and changes in expressive social and communicative behaviors in students were observed in relation to the intervention. Our findings extend the literature on BSP and have merit to help establish BIE coaching as an evidence-based practice (EBP) for paraeducators
Are older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain less active than older adults without pain? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Objective:
To compare the overall levels of physical activity of older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain and asymptomatic controls.
Review Methods:
A systematic review of the literature was conducted using a Cochrane methodology and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Major electronic databases were searched from inception until December 2012, including the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EBSCO, EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, PsycINFO, and the international prospective register of systematic reviews. In addition, citation chasing was undertaken, and key authors were contacted. Eligibility criteria were established around participants used and outcome measures focusing on daily physical activity. A meta-analysis was conducted on appropriate studies.
Results:
Eight studies met the eligibility criteria, four of these reported a statistically lower level of physical activity in the older adult sampl e with chronic pain compared with the asymptomatic group. It was possible to perform a non-heterogeneous meta-analysis on five studies. This established that 1,159 older adults with chronic pain had a significantly lower level of physical activity (â0.20, confidence interval 95%â=ââ0.34 to â0.06, pâ=â0.004) compared with 576 without chronic pain.
Conclusion:
Older adults with chronic pain appear to be less active than asymptomatic controls. Although this difference was small, it is likely to be clinically meaningful. It is imperative that clinicians encourage older people with chronic pain to remain active as physical activity is a central non-pharmacological strategy in the management of chronic pain and is integral for healthy aging. Future research should prioritize the use of objective measurement of physical activity
Dietary supplementation by older adults in southern China: a hospital outpatient clinic study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There has been little knowledge about dietary supplementation by the Chinese elderly. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the usage of dietary supplements by older adults in southern China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 600 community-dwelling older adults were recruited from the outpatient clinics of three major hospitals in Foshan city between July 2007 and July 2008. Face-to-face interviews of participants were conducted to obtain information on demographics, lifestyle and dietary supplements use. Frequency and duration of usage were recorded for six categories of dietary supplements.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the 446 consented participants (241 men and 205 women) who were over 55 years of age, 19.1% consumed one or more types of dietary supplements. The prevalence of usage was significantly higher (p = 0.008) for females (24.4%) than for males (14.5%). Dietary supplements were more likely to be consumed by non-smokers (p = 0.021) and those with hyperlipidemia (p = 0.003). The most popular supplement among users was calcium (53%). The majority (71%) of the users consumed supplements on a regular basis at one or more times per day, with an average duration of 2.95 (SD 4.80) years.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The overall prevalence of dietary supplementation in this older Chinese population was considerably lower than those in other Asia-Pacific countries.</p

Quantitative analyses and modelling to support achievement of the 2020 goals for nine neglected tropical diseases
Quantitative analysis and mathematical models are useful tools in informing strategies to control or eliminate disease. Currently, there is an urgent need to develop these tools to inform policy to achieve the 2020 goals for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). In this paper we give an overview of a collection of novel model-based analyses which aim to address key questions on the dynamics of transmission and control of nine NTDs: Chagas disease, visceral leishmaniasis, human African trypanosomiasis, leprosy, soil-transmitted helminths, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis and trachoma. Several common themes resonate throughout these analyses, including: the importance of epidemiological setting on the success of interventions; targeting groups who are at highest risk of infection or re-infection; and reaching populations who are not accessing interventions and may act as a reservoir for infection,. The results also highlight the challenge of maintaining elimination âas a public health problemâ when true elimination is not reached. The models elucidate the factors that may be contributing most to persistence of disease and discuss the requirements for eventually achieving true elimination, if that is possible. Overall this collection presents new analyses to inform current control initiatives. These papers form a base from which further development of the models and more rigorous validation against a variety of datasets can help to give more detailed advice. At the moment, the modelsâ predictions are being considered as the world prepares for a final push towards control or elimination of neglected tropical diseases by 2020
FINCH: A Blueprint for Accessible and Scientifically Valuable Remote Sensing Satellite Missions
Satellite remote sensing missions have grown in popularity over the past fifteen years due to their ability to cover large swaths of land at regular time intervals, making them suitable for monitoring environmental trends such as greenhouse gas emissions and agricultural practices. As environmental monitoring becomes central in global efforts to combat climate change, accessible platforms for contributing to this research are critical. Many remote sensing missions demand high performance of payloads, restricting research and development to organizations with sufficient resources to address these challenges. Atmospheric remote sensing missions, for example, require extremely high spatial and spectral resolutions to generate scientifically useful results. As an undergraduate-led design team, the University of Toronto Aerospace Teamâs Space Systems Division has performed an extensive mission selection process to find a feasible and impactful mission focusing on crop residue mapping. This mission profile provides the data needed to improve crop residue retention practices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from soil, while relaxing performance requirements relative to many active atmospheric sensing missions. This is accompanied by the design of FINCH, a 3U CubeSat with a hyperspectral camera composed of custom and commercial off-the-shelf components. The teamâs custom composite payload, the FINCH Eye, strives to advance performance achieved at this form factor by leveraging novel technologies while keeping design feasibility for a student team a priority. Optical and mechanical design decisions and performance are detailed, as well as assembly, integration, and testing considerations. Beyond its design, the FINCH Eye is examined from operational, timeline, and financial perspectives, and a discussion of the supporting firmware, data processing, and attitude control systems is included. Insight is provided into open-source tools that the team has developed to aid in the design process, including a linear error analysis tool for assessing scientific performance, an optical system tradeoff analysis tool, and data processing algorithms. Ultimately, the team presents a comprehensive case study of an accessible and impactful satellite optical payload design process, in hopes of serving as a blueprint for future design teams seeking to contribute to remote sensing research
A Review of Dietary Prevention of Human Papillomavirus-Related Infection of the Cervix and Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia
The natural history of cervical cancer suggests that prevention can be achieved by modification of the host's immune system through a nutrient-mediated program. This study reviews the preventive role of dietary intake on cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) induced by human papillomavirus (HPV). Electronic databases were searched using relevant keywords such as, but not limited to, human papillomavirus infection, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, lifestyle factors, nutrients intake, and diet. High consumption of fruit and vegetables appears to be protective against CIN. The findings also highlight the possibility of consuming high levels of specific nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and retaining sufficient level of these elements in the body, especially those with high antioxidants and antiviral properties, to prevent progression of transient and persistent HPV infections to high-grade CIN 2 and 3 (including in situ cervical cancer). The protective effect is not significant for high-risk HPV persistent infections and invasive cervical cancer. Although it appears that intake of specific nutrients, vitamins, and minerals may be good in CIN prevention, there is lack of evidence from controlled trial to confirm this. Health professionals shall focus on implementation of a balanced-diet prevention strategy at an early stage for cervical cancer prevention
International management platform for children's interstitial lung disease (chILD-EU)
BACKGROUND: Children's interstitial lung diseases (chILD) cover many rare entities, frequently not diagnosed or studied in detail. There is a great need for specialised advice and for internationally agreed subclassification of entities collected in a register.Our objective was to implement an international management platform with independent multidisciplinary review of cases at presentation for long-term follow-up and to test if this would allow for more accurate diagnosis. Also, quality and reproducibility of a diagnostic subclassification system were assessed using a collection of 25 complex chILD cases. METHODS: A web-based chILD management platform with a registry and biobank was successfully designed and implemented. RESULTS: Over a 3-year period, 575 patients were included for observation spanning a wide spectrum of chILD. In 346 patients, multidisciplinary reviews were completed by teams at five international sites (Munich 51%, London 12%, Hannover 31%, Ankara 1% and Paris 5%). In 13%, the diagnosis reached by the referring team was not confirmed by peer review. Among these, the diagnosis initially given was wrong (27%), imprecise (50%) or significant information was added (23%).The ability of nine expert clinicians to subcategorise the final diagnosis into the chILD-EU register classification had an overall exact inter-rater agreement of 59% on first assessment and after training, 64%. Only 10% of the 'wrong' answers resulted in allocation to an incorrect category. Subcategorisation proved useful but training is needed for optimal implementation. CONCLUSIONS: We have shown that chILD-EU has generated a platform to help the clinical assessment of chILD. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Results, NCT02852928
