Laminosioptes cysticola and Gallibacterium anatis infections in a lymphoma diseased chicken hen with a cystic right oviduct
A domestic hen showing infraorbital swelling was presented for a routine classroom demonstration of avian diagnostics. At necropsy, tiny whitish caseo-calcareous nodules were found in the subcutaneous tissues of the carcass, produced by the subcutaneous fowl mite, Laminosioptes cysticola. Gallibacterium anatis biovar haemolytica was isolated from the infraorbital sinus, it containing a caseous exudate. During necropsy, a conspicuous cyst was found in the abdominal cavity. Microscopic examination of the internal lining of the cyst revealed a single cuboidal to columnar, ciliated epithelium, leading to a diagnosis of oviductal cyst. Also, the microscopic examination of the heart, lung, liver and kidney reveal a multifocal infiltration of lymphoma cells. It appears the first case of simultaneous presentation of these conditions from a single chicken
Radial and tangential migration of telencephalic somatostatin neurons originated from the mouse diagonal area
The telencephalic subpallium is the source of various GABAergic interneuron cohorts that invade the pallium via tangential migration. Based on genoarchitectonic studies, the subpallium has been subdivided into four major domains: striatum, pallidum, diagonal area and preoptic area (Puelles et al. 2013; Allen Developing Mouse Brain Atlas), and a larger set of molecularly distinct progenitor areas (Flames et al. 2007). Fate mapping, genetic lineage-tracing studies, and other approaches have suggested that each subpallial subdivision produces specific sorts of inhibitory interneurons, distinguished by differential peptidic content, which are distributed tangentially to pallial and subpallial target territories (e.g., olfactory bulb, isocortex, hippocampus, pallial and subpallial amygdala, striatum, pallidum, septum). In this report, we map descriptively the early differentiation and apparent migratory dispersion of mouse subpallial somatostatin-expressing (Sst) cells from E10.5 onward, comparing their topography with the expression patterns of the genes Dlx5, Gbx2, Lhx7-8, Nkx2.1, Nkx5.1 (Hmx3), and Shh, which variously label parts of the subpallium. Whereas some experimental results suggest that Sst cells are pallidal, our data reveal that many, if not most, telencephalic Sst cells derive from de diagonal area (Dg). Sst-positive cells initially only present at the embryonic Dg selectively populate radially the medial part of the bed nucleus striae terminalis (from paraseptal to amygdaloid regions) and part of the central amygdala; they also invade tangentially the striatum, while eschewing the globus pallidum and the preoptic area, and integrate within most cortical and nuclear pallial areas between E10.5 and E16.5.This work was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation grant BFU2008-04156, and SENECA Foundation contract 0458/GERM/06-10891 to L.P.; and the Local Government of Castilla-La Mancha grant PII1I09-0065-8194 to C.D. Multi-Objective and Financial Portfolio Optimization of Carrier-Sense Multiple Access Protocols with Cooperative Diversity
8th International Workshop on Multiple Access Communications (MACOM2015), Helsinki, Finland. This paper presents a trade-off design and optimization of a class of wireless carrier-sense multiple access protocols where collision-free transmissions are assisted by the potential cooperative retransmissions of inactive terminals with a correct copy of the original transmission. Terminals are enabled with a decode-and-forward relaying protocol. The analysis is focused on asymmetrical settings, where terminals experience different channel and queuing statistics. This work is based on multi-objective and financial portfolio optimization tools. Each packet transmission is thus regarded not only as a network resource, but also as a financial asset with different values of return and risk (or variance of the return). The objective of this financial optimization is to find the transmission policy that simultaneously maximizes return and minimizes risk in the network. The work is focused on the characterization of the boundaries (envelope) of different types of trade-off performance regions: the conventional throughput region, sum-throughput vs. fairness, sum-throughput vs. power, and return vs. risk regions. Fairness is evaluated by means of the Gini-index, which is a metric commonly used in economics to measure income inequality. Transmit power is directly linked to the global transmission rate. The protocol is shown to outperform non-cooperative solutions under different network conditions that are here discussed
Effect of Phosphorus and Strontium Additions on Formation Temperature and Nucleation Density of Primary Silicon in Al-19 Wt Pct Si Alloy and Their Effect on Eutectic Temperature
The influence of P and Sr additions on the formation temperature and nucleation density of primary silicon in Al-19 wt pct Si alloy has been determined, for small volumes of melt solidified at cooling rates _T of ~0.3 and 1 K/s. The proportion of ingot featuring primary silicon decreased
progressively with increased Sr addition, which also markedly reduced the temperature for first formation of primary silicon and the number of primary silicon particles per unit volume Nv: When combined with previously published results, the effects of amount of P addition and cooling rate on Nv are in reasonable accord with Nv _T ¼ ðp=6fÞ1=2 109 [250 215 (wt pct P)0.17]3, where Nv is in mm3, _T is in K/s, and f is volume fraction of primary silicon.
Increased P addition reduces the eutectic temperature, while increased Sr appears to generate a minimum in eutectic temperature at about 100 ppmw Sr
New silica based adsorbent material from rice straw and its in-flow application to nitrate reduction in waters: Process sustainability and scale-up possibilities
[EN] This paper shows a particular example to move to a sustainable circular economical process from valorization of rice straw ashes by developing a green synthesis for obtaining a useful sub-product. This strategy can palliate negative effects of the agriculture waste practices on the environment and also the obtained silica reduced nitrate content in waters. It is demonstrated that the silica synthesis developed at lab was scalable more than a hundred times with good results. Adsorption studies of nitrate in standards and real well waters at lab scale and scaling-up provided similar results. Adsorption values near to 15 mg/g for nitrate standards and 8.5 mg/g for well water were obtained until achieving the initial nitrate concentration. Experimental breakthrough curves fitted to Thomas model, which gave similar results for adsorption capacities. The adsorption capacity was checked with that obtained by a commercial resin, providing improved results. The method at large scale was compared with industrial traditional methods and green adsorbents. The authors are grateful to EU (EASME LIFE and CIP ECO-Innovation) LIBERNITRATE. The astrometric Gaia-FUN-SSO observation campaign of 99 942 Apophis
Astrometric observations performed by the Gaia Follow-Up Network for Solar
System Objects (Gaia-FUN-SSO) play a key role in ensuring that moving objects
first detected by ESA's Gaia mission remain recoverable after their discovery.
An observation campaign on the potentially hazardous asteroid (99 942) Apophis
was conducted during the asteroid's latest period of visibility, from
12/21/2012 to 5/2/2013, to test the coordination and evaluate the overall
performance of the Gaia-FUN-SSO . The 2732 high quality astrometric
observations acquired during the Gaia-FUN-SSO campaign were reduced with the
Platform for Reduction of Astronomical Images Automatically (PRAIA), using the
USNO CCD Astrograph Catalogue 4 (UCAC4) as a reference. The astrometric
reduction process and the precision of the newly obtained measurements are
discussed. We compare the residuals of astrometric observations that we
obtained using this reduction process to data sets that were individually
reduced by observers and accepted by the Minor Planet Center. We obtained 2103
previously unpublished astrometric positions and provide these to the
scientific community. Using these data we show that our reduction of this
astrometric campaign with a reliable stellar catalog substantially improves the
quality of the astrometric results. We present evidence that the new data will
help to reduce the orbit uncertainty of Apophis during its close approach in
2029. We show that uncertainties due to geolocations of observing stations, as
well as rounding of astrometric data can introduce an unnecessary degradation
in the quality of the resulting astrometric positions. Finally, we discuss the
impact of our campaign reduction on the recovery process of newly discovered
asteroids.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Heterotic-Type II duality in the hypermultiplet sector
We revisit the duality between heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x
T^2 and type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X in the hypermultiplet
sector. We derive an explicit map between the field variables of the respective
moduli spaces at the level of the classical effective actions. We determine the
parametrization of the K3 moduli space consistent with the Ferrara-Sabharwal
form. From the expression of the holomorphic prepotential we are led to
conjecture that both X and its mirror must be K3 fibrations in order for the
type IIA theory to have an heterotic dual. We then focus on the region of the
moduli space where the metric is expressed in terms of a prepotential on both
sides of the duality. Applying the duality we derive the heterotic
hypermultiplet metric for a gauge bundle which is reduced to 24 point-like
instantons. This result is confirmed by using the duality between the heterotic
theory on T^3 and M-theory on K3. We finally study the hyper-Kaehler metric on
the moduli space of an SU(2) bundle on K3.Comment: 27 pages; references added, typos correcte
