Book Review: James L. Drexler, Editor. Schools as Communities: Educational Leadership, Relationships, and the Eternal Value of Christian Schooling.
Anyone who has engaged in the calling of Christian education knows that it can be — and usually is — one of the most exciting, delightful, fulfilling, and joyous ministries that a believer can know. Its golden days are a real “foretaste of glory divine,” its opportunities for those who truly love the possibilities of the mind and heart of Christ in the lives of our students are the very aroma of the Lord in our work. Lives are changed; parents are supportive; administrators are helpful; the board is productive. Sacrifices are engaged willingly, trials are gladly borne. We go home at the end of the day, and can hardly wait to return in the morning
Book Review: William Jeynes. Religion, Education, and Academic Success
In this provocative work, Dr. William Jeynes of California State University at Long Beach addresses a vital educational question: is there a statistically verifiable relationship between religious belief and academic achievement? For the non- Christian, it is a question of the social utility of religion; does a demonstrable and significant correlation between a religious mindset and measurable academic outcomes exist? Or is a secular outlook equally capable of superior educational success? For the Christian thinker, it is a question of the relationship between the root of faith and the fruit of the “strong mind” (II Tim. 1:7) promised in the scriptures. Can this be translated into statistical categories like “religious people” and “religious institutions” for investigation? If so, how can this be done
Legitimating space: art and the politics of place
Rock art, graffiti, and other emplaced works of art bring people together at specific places. This type of art allows for encounters between people in their absence, and thus presents a range of possibilities for making statements about specific places and those who occupy or visit. This opens the possibility for issues of legitimation to become implicitly or explicitly articulated. However, the legitimate use of space, and the legitimate employment of art, can vary drastically across different contexts. Here, the paper discusses a range of different strategies of art and legitimation in three case studies from India, California, and Spai
Patterns of Financing: A Comparison Between White- and African-American Young Firms
Based on Kauffman Firm Survey data, examines differences in start-up and follow-on capital injections into and capital use by firms with African-American and white owners. Explores how access to capital affects the racial gap in new business formation
Deployable Shroud for the International X-Ray Observatory
A document describes the design of a lightweight (between 100 to 200 kg), light-tight shroud of about 3.9 meters in diameter that could be stowed into a very small volume, and be deployed to 12 meters. The shroud will consist of two concentric multi-layer blankets (MLIs) that are constructed in an accordion shape
Null Lens Assembly for X-Ray Mirror Segments
A document discusses a null lens assembly that allows laser interferometry of 60 deg. slumped glass mirror segments used in x-ray mirrors. The assembly consists of four lenses in precise alignment to each other, with incorporated piezoelectric nanometer stepping actuators to position the lenses in six degrees of freedom for positioning relative to each other
Achievements and challenges of Space Station Freedom's safety review process
The most complex space vehicle in history, Space Station Freedom, is well underway to completion, and System Safety is a vital part of the program. The purpose is to summarize and illustrate the progress that over one-hundred System Safety engineers have made in identifying, documenting, and controlling the hazards inherent in the space station. To date, Space Station Freedom has been reviewed by NASA's safety panels through the first six assembly flights, when Freedom achieves a configuration known as Man Tended Capability. During the eight weeks of safety reviews spread out over a year and a half, over 200 preliminary hazard reports were presented. Along the way NASA and its contractors faced many challenges, made much progress, and even learned a few lessons
Outpatient Injuries of the Hand
All hand injuries, regardless of superficiality, may result in crippling loss of function if treatment is inadequate or mishandled. The essential elements of diagnosis, examination, approach to therapy and after-care are constant. The major difference between an injury requiring hospitalization and one amenable to outpatient management is the extent of the trauma. This article reviews the major outpatient injuries with respect to method of management, choice of definitive procedure, and preservation of function
