    The Perceived Relationship between Wellness and Microaggressions in African American and Latina American Female Doctoral Students in Counselor Education Programs

    Wellness has been identified as one of the primary goals in the counseling profession (Myers, 1992; Myers & Sweeney, 2005; Roscoe, 2009). Although wellness is one of the main goals of counseling, and there has been a plethora of research on wellness, there is a scarcity of wellness research focused on counselors, and counselors in training (Myers & Sweeney, 2008). Research on racial discrimination and microaggressions in students, as well as faculty in higher education suggests that many colleges and universities are hostile settings for people of color (Bradley & Holcomb-McCoy, 2004; Salazar, 2009; Salazar et al., 2004). Day to day experience with racial microaggressions can be detrimental to the well-being of people of color (Sue, Lin, Torino, Capodilupo, & Rivera, 2009; Troxel et al., 2003). This study utilized qualitative methods to examine the perceived relationship between racial microaggressions and wellness in female graduate students of color. A phenomenological approach (Creswell, 2007; Moustakas, 1994) guided this methodology. Participants included seven African American and one Latina American females who were enrolled in CACREP accredited counselor education doctoral programs in one region of the United States. Participants were interviewed face to face and/or by phone in two rounds of interviews. Interview questions addressed participantsā€™ experiences, their definitions of wellness, and their perceptions of the relationship between wellness and racial microaggressions. Participants discussed seven themes including: program experience, day to day experiences of microaggressions, types of microaggressions, wellness, the impact of microaggressions on wellness, wellness strategies in coping with microaggressions, and program expectations. The primary types of microaggressions experienced were microinsults (n=8) and microinequities (n=7). Microaggressions were found to have an impact on emotional, academic/career, overall, interpersonal/social, physical, psychological, personal, and spiritual components of wellness. Wellness strategies helped to decrease participants (n=4) vulnerability to racial microaggressions. This study provides information which informs counseling programs of the unique experiences and needs of Latina and African American female graduate students, with implications for increasing retention rates and improving the overall quality and wellness of these students

    Helping Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom

    Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) created multiple challenges for the mental health of soldiers who served there. The local facility in this study determined there was a gap in providing OEF/OIF veterans assistance with mental health issues. The practice-focused question explored whether a training module for nurses would assist in the identification of signs and symptoms of mental health issues in OEF/OIF veterans, such as posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, addictions, and suicidal/homicidal ideations, to help ensure timely referral for services. The project used Kolcaba\u27s comfort theory as the basis for the training module. A pretest, training module, and posttest were created and administered to the expert panel. Results showed the training module contained information to assist nurses in identifying the signs and symptoms of mental health issues as well as educated the nurses on various interventions that were available for the veterans. It was determined by the expert panel that the training module should be implemented to assist in decreasing the gap in care for OEF/OIF veterans. This training module might support positive social change by empowering nurses to assist veterans with coping skills overcome mental health issues and lead positive and productive lives

    DATA STRUCTURE WITH RESPECT TO THE MAIN EFFECTS MODEL: A DISCUSSION MOTIVATED BY A META-ANALYSIS DATA SET

    A discussion on data structure relative to the main effects model is motivated by a severely unbalanced meta-analysis data set. This data set is used to highlight the difficulty of assessing data structure when multiple factor data sets are severely unbalanced. Both theoretical results and numerical examples are used to establish that simple approaches to examining data structure using two-way tables provide easily assimilated information about the effect of data unbalance on main effect contrast variances. In addition, notions of balance, proportionality, unbalance, and missing cells with respect to the main effects model are defined in terms of the two-way tables and are related to main effect contrast estimate variances as assessed using the D-optimality criterion

    The Mass of the Black Hole in XTE J1118+480

    We present contemporaneous, broadband, near-infrared spectroscopy (0.9-2.45 Ī¼m) and H-band photometry of the black hole X-ray binary, XTE J1118+480. We determined the fractional dilution of the NIR ellipsoidal light curves of the donor star from other emission sources in the system by comparing the absorption features in the spectrum with field stars of known spectral type. We constrained the donor star spectral type to K7 V-M1 V and determined that the donor star contributed 54% Ā± 27% of the H-band flux at the epoch of our observations. This result underscores the conclusion that the donor star cannot be assumed to be the only NIR emission source in quiescent X-ray binaries. The H-band light curve shows a double-humped asymmetric modulation with extra flux at orbital phase 0.75. The light curve was fitted with a donor star model light curve, taking into account a constant second flux component based on the dilution analysis. We also fitted models that included emission from the donor star, a constant component from the accretion disk, and a phase-variable component from the bright spot where the mass accretion stream impacts the disk. These simple models with reasonable estimates for the component physical parameters can fully account for the observed light curve, including the extra emission at phase 0.75. From our fits, we constrained the binary inclination to 68Ā° ā‰¤ i ā‰¤ 79Ā°. This leads to a black hole mass of 6.9 M_ā˜‰ ā‰¤ M_(BH) ā‰¤ 8.2 M_ā˜‰. Long-term variations in the NIR light curve shape in XTE J1118+480 are similar to those seen in other X-ray binaries and demonstrate the presence of continued activity and variability in these systems even when in full quiescence
