Casimir force between eccentric cylinders
We consider the Casimir interaction between a cylinder and a hollow cylinder,
both conducting, with parallel axis and slightly different radii. The Casimir
force, which vanishes in the coaxial situation, is evaluated for both small and
large eccentricities using the proximity approximation. The cylindrical
configuration offers various experimental advantages with respect to the
parallel planes or the plane-sphere geometries, leading to favourable
conditions for the search of extra-gravitational forces in the micrometer range
and for the observation of finite temperature corrections.Comment: To be published in Europhysics Letters. 7 pages, 4 figure
During april 2002 to april 2003, biological water quality in the Santa Maria River was monitored at 13 sampling stations along 50 km of the mid-low section. Values for the biological water quality were calculated using the BMWP’ index. Physical & chemical parameters were also observed. Although parameters indicated stable conditions, biological water quality represents a limiting factor for the establishment and normal development of aquatic insect communities.

The present work aimed to determine the characteristics of sea turtle nesting at Lagarto Beach and evaluate the success of relocated nests. Nocturnal monitoring was carried out from June 2021 to January 2022, to collect biometric data and relocate nests to a local nursery. A total of 53 Lepidochelys olivacea turtles were identified, which averaged 67.90 cm in length and 70.26 cm in carapace width. Thirty-eight Chelonia mydas turtles were quantified; whose carapace averaged 90.18 cm in length and 86.26 cm in width. In sum, 116 nests were relocated to the nursery, and their exhumation allowed the release of 7,059 hatchlings, reaching a 72.68% hatching success rate. Hatchlings averaged 34.26 mm in carapace width, 41.98 mm in carapace length, and 15.39 g in weight. On the beach, 16 nests were poached, 14 of L. olivacea and two of C. mydas, while four were poached in the hatchery. Poaching in the hatchery amounted to 184 and 199 eggs for L. olivacea and C. mydas, respectively. Considering the percentages of hatching by species, it is estimated that 239 hatchlings were lost as a result of egg poaching. It is necessary to further strengthen the protection and conservation strategies for these important marine reptiles.

Preference for biological motion is reduced in ASD: implications for clinical trials and the search for biomarkers.
BACKGROUND: The neurocognitive mechanisms underlying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain unclear. Progress has been largely hampered by small sample sizes, variable age ranges and resulting inconsistent findings. There is a pressing need for large definitive studies to delineate the nature and extent of key case/control differences to direct research towards fruitful areas for future investigation. Here we focus on perception of biological motion, a promising index of social brain function which may be altered in ASD. In a large sample ranging from childhood to adulthood, we assess whether biological motion preference differs in ASD compared to neurotypical participants (NT), how differences are modulated by age and sex and whether they are associated with dimensional variation in concurrent or later symptomatology. METHODS: Eye-tracking data were collected from 486 6-to-30-year-old autistic (N = 282) and non-autistic control (N = 204) participants whilst they viewed 28 trials pairing biological (BM) and control (non-biological, CTRL) motion. Preference for the biological motion stimulus was calculated as (1) proportion looking time difference (BM-CTRL) and (2) peak look duration difference (BM-CTRL). RESULTS: The ASD group showed a present but weaker preference for biological motion than the NT group. The nature of the control stimulus modulated preference for biological motion in both groups. Biological motion preference did not vary with age, gender, or concurrent or prospective social communicative skill within the ASD group, although a lack of clear preference for either stimulus was associated with higher social-communicative symptoms at baseline. LIMITATIONS: The paired visual preference we used may underestimate preference for a stimulus in younger and lower IQ individuals. Our ASD group had a lower average IQ by approximately seven points. 18% of our sample was not analysed for various technical and behavioural reasons. CONCLUSIONS: Biological motion preference elicits small-to-medium-sized case-control effects, but individual differences do not strongly relate to core social autism associated symptomatology. We interpret this as an autistic difference (as opposed to a deficit) likely manifest in social brain regions. The extent to which this is an innate difference present from birth and central to the autistic phenotype, or the consequence of a life lived with ASD, is unclear
Persistent Megalocystic Ovary Following in Vitro Fertilization in a Postpartum Patient with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
SummaryObjectiveOvarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is more severe when pregnancy occurs, as the developing pregnancy produces human chorionic gonadotropin, which stimulates the ovary's persistent growth. If no pregnancy occurs, the syndrome will typically resolve within 1 week. In a maintained pregnancy, slow resolution of symptoms usually occurs over 1-2 months.Case ReportA 31-year-old woman, gravida 2, para 1, aborta 1, with polycystic ovary syndrome underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) with clomiphene citrate and follicle-stimulating hormone/gonadotropin releasing hormone-antagonist stimulation. During transvaginal oocyte retrieval, enlarged bilateral ovaries were noted. She had an episode of OHSS after IVF/embryo transfer, for which paracentesis was performed three times. Pregnancy was achieved. Throughout antenatal examinations, bilateral ovaries were enlarged. She delivered a healthy baby by cesarean section at term. However, 1 month after delivery, the bilateral ovary had not shrunk, and levels of tumor markers CA125 and CA199 were 50.84 and 41.34 U/mL, respectively. At laparotomy for suspected malignancy, both adnexae formed “kissing ovaries”, which were multinodulated with yellow serous fluid. Specimens from wedge resection submitted for frozen section showed a benign ovarian cyst. The final pathology report showed bilateral follicle cysts.ConclusionWith the increasing use of gonadotropins in the management of infertility, ovarian enlargement secondary to hyperstimulation is common. Generally, symptoms appear between the 6th and 13th weeks of pregnancy and disappear thereafter. The hyperstimulated ovary often subsides after the first trimester. This case is unusual as the megalocystic ovary persisted after delivery. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of enlarged bilateral ovaries persisting 2 months after delivery
