    Pursuing the planet-debris disk connection: Analysis of upper limits from the Anglo-Australian Planet Search

    Solid material in protoplanetary discs will suffer one of two fates after the epoch of planet formation; either being bound up into planetary bodies, or remaining in smaller planetesimals to be ground into dust. These end states are identified through detection of sub-stellar companions by periodic radial velocity (or transit) variations of the star, and excess emission at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths, respectively. Since the material that goes into producing the observable outcomes of planet formation is the same, we might expect these components to be related both to each other and their host star. Heretofore, our knowledge of planetary systems around other stars has been strongly limited by instrumental sensitivity. In this work, we combine observations at far-infrared wavelengths by IRAS, Spitzer, and Herschel with limits on planetary companions derived from non-detections in the 16-year Anglo-Australian Planet Search to clarify the architectures of these (potential) planetary systems and search for evidence of correlations between their constituent parts. We find no convincing evidence of such correlations, possibly owing to the dynamical history of the disk systems, or the greater distance of the planet-search targets. Our results place robust limits on the presence of Jupiter analogs which, in concert with the debris disk observations, provides insights on the small-body dynamics of these nearby systems.Comment: Accepted for publication in A

    Tee transfiguration of Jesus and the early church

    This thesis la concerned with the theological significance of the Transfiguration of –Jesus. It is an attempt to put into a true perspective an event in the earthly life of Jesus which is too often ignored and misunderstood. It seeks to establish the importance of the transfiguration in the ministry of Jesus, within the Early Church, and in the general framework of New Testament expectation. As well as the three, synoptic accounts of the Transfiguration, the account record in 2 Peter is also analysed. Here, we argue, lies a reference to the transfiguration which is authentically petrine (though used in this Epistle by a pseudonymous author) and which may well have influenced the Evangelists when they reported the same event. The context of the Transfiguration in 2 Peter 1.l6-l8 is that of an apology for the delay of the Parousia, which the Early Church, it would seem, had expected immediately after the ascension. We argue that the 2 Peter account could, therefore, be the primitive, Petrine reminiscence of the Apostle Peter, recorded by an unknown author to make his work appear more authentic. The context of the Transfiguration within 2 Peter and, therefore, in the Early Church, would seen to be that of a prefiguratlon of all that will take place when Christ appears again in glory. Each of the synoptic writers were undoubtedly aware of this understanding of the of the Transfiguration tradition as they, in turn, moulded the narrative into their Gospel narratives. In all three synoptic accounts, the parallelism between Baptism and Transfiguration, the placing of the account near to events at caesares, Philippi, and the Importance of MK .9.1 (and parallels), points to a simple and yet a crucial development within the Gospels of the understanding of the early church concerning the Transfiguration of Jesus.     PyPhi: A toolbox for integrated information theory

    Integrated information theory provides a mathematical framework to fully characterize the cause-effect structure of a physical system. Here, we introduce PyPhi, a Python software package that implements this framework for causal analysis and unfolds the full cause-effect structure of discrete dynamical systems of binary elements. The software allows users to easily study these structures, serves as an up-to-date reference implementation of the formalisms of integrated information theory, and has been applied in research on complexity, emergence, and certain biological questions. We first provide an overview of the main algorithm and demonstrate PyPhi's functionality in the course of analyzing an example system, and then describe details of the algorithm's design and implementation. PyPhi can be installed with Python's package manager via the command 'pip install pyphi' on Linux and macOS systems equipped with Python 3.4 or higher. PyPhi is open-source and licensed under the GPLv3; the source code is hosted on GitHub at https://github.com/wmayner/pyphi .     Four-point bending evaluation of dentin-composite interfaces with various stresses

    Fracture properties of composite-dentin beams bonded with a self?etching adhesive were tested following short term pretreatments to simulate potential degradation mechanisms (thermal cycling, immersion in 5% NaOCl, or fatigue cycling). Beams of rectangular cross-section were shaped to a size of ~0.87 x 0.87 x 10 mm and placed in a four-point bending apparatus, with the loading points 1.8 and 7.2 mm apart, with the interface centered between the inner rollers. Testing was performed in Hanks? Balanced Salt Solution at 25 ?C . Solid dentin and solid composite beams [n = 6] had bending strengths of 164.4 and 164.6 MPa, respectively, under monotonically increasing loads. Bonded beams [n = 6] had strengths of 56.3 MPa. Thermo-cycling (5? to 55?C), NaOCl solution immersion, or 105 of pre-fatigue cycles did not decrease the strength. Conclusion: Thermal stress, exposure to NaOCL, or 105 cycles of mechanical stress does not decrease bond strength of composite bonded to dentin as tested in four-point bending

The definitive version was published in Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology 34 (2017): 269-275, doi:10.1175/JTECH-D-11-00196.1.A data telemetry technique for communicating over standard oceanographic sea cables that achieves a nearly 100-fold increase in bandwidth as compared to traditional systems has been recently developed and successfully used at sea on board two Research Vessel (R/V) Atlantis cruises with an 8.5-km, 0.322-in.-diameter three-conductor sea cable. The system uses commercially available modules to provide Ethernet connectivity through existing sea cables, linking serial and video underwater instrumentation to the shipboard user. The new method applies Synchronous Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) communications technology to undersea applications, greatly increasing the opportunities to use scientific instrumentation from existing ships and sea cables at minimal cost and without modification.This development program has been supported, in part, through research grants from the National Science Foundation (OCE 0447395), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s ASTEP program (NNX09AB76G), and a WHOI Green and Hiam Innovative Technology Award.2017-07-2
