News Accuracy in Switzerland and Italy
Nearly 80 years of accuracy research in the United States has documented that the press frequently errs, but empirical study about news accuracy elsewhere in the world is absent. This article presents an accuracy audit of Swiss and Italian daily regional newspapers. Replicating US research, the study offers a trans-Atlantic perspective of news accuracy. To compare newspaper accuracy in Switzerland and Italy to longitudinal accuracy research in the United States, the study followed closely the methodology pioneered by Charnley (1936) and adapted by Maier (2005). News sources found factual inaccuracy in 60 percent of Swiss newspaper stories they reviewed, compared to 48 percent of US and 52 percent of Italian newspapers examined. The results show that newspaper inaccuracy—and its corrosive effect on media credibility—transcends national borders and journalism cultures. Nowadays, digitization offers new ways of implementing correction policies. Media organizations need, however, to adapt to these changes and to adapt their structures in particular to new forms of participative and interactive two-way communication
Cu-Pd Bimetal and CuPt Alloy Nanotubes Derived from Cu Nanowires : Novel Amplification Media for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
AbstractSurface-plasmons of metals have been utilized to enhance the Raman spectra of various adsorbed moieties for over decades. While amplification of the spectral intensity takes place on most of the metals, due to their superb properties, Au, Ag and Cu surfaces represent the benchmark in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. In this paper, we show that Cu-Pd bimetal and CuPt alloy nanotubes derived from Cu nanowires by simple galvanic exchange reactions are suitable for the efficient enhancement of Raman spectra when dispersed on Si surfaces. Amplification factors of 120× on Cu nanowires, 150× on Cu-Pd bimetal nanotubes and 250× on CuPt alloy nanotubes in reference to the substrate are measured for rhodamine 6G and methyl violet model compounds. We also show that the nanotubes dispersed on Au surfaces can contribute to a further intensity enhancement of the substrate and detect analytes adsorbed from 10 −6 M analyte concentrations. Our results obtained using bimetallic and alloy nanomaterials shed light on a new strategy to synthetize and apply new types of metal nanostructures and compositions for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in the future.Abstract

Development of a Follow-Up Measure to Ensure Complete Screening for Colorectal Cancer
IMPORTANCE: The current quality performance measure for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is limited to initial screening. Despite low rates, there is no measure for appropriate follow-up with colonoscopy after receipt of an abnormal result of a stool-based screening test (SBT) for CRC. A quality performance measure is needed.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a quality performance measure for follow-up colonoscopy within 6 months of an abnormal result of an SBT for CRC.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective quality improvement study examined data from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020, with 2018 plus 6 months of follow-up as the primary measurement period to verify performance rates, specify a potential measure, and test for validity, reliability, and feasibility. The Optum Labs Data Warehouse (OLDW), a deidentified database of health care claims and clinical data, was accessed. The OLDW contains longitudinal health information on enrollees and patients, representing a diverse mixture of ages and geographic regions across the US. For the database study, adults from 38 health care organizations (HCOs) aged 50 to 75 years who completed an initial CRC SBT with an abnormal result were observed to determine follow-up colonoscopy rates within 6 months. Rates were stratified by race, ethnicity, sex, insurance, and test modality. Three HCOs participated in the feasibility field testing. Data were analyzed from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023.
MAIN OUTCOME AND MEASURES: The primary outcome consisted of follow-up colonoscopy rates following an abnormal SBT result for CRC. Reliability statistics were also calculated across HCOs, race, ethnicity, and measurement year.
RESULTS: Among 20 581 adults (48.6% men and 51.4% women; 307 [1.5%] Asian, 492 [7.2%] Black, 644 [3.1%] Hispanic, and 17 705 [86.0%] White; mean [SD] age, 63.6 [7.1] years) in 38 health systems, 47.9% had a follow-up colonoscopy following an abnormal SBT result for CRC within 6 months. There was significant variation between HCOs. Notably, significantly fewer Black patients (37.1% [95% CI, 34.6%-39.5%]) and patients with Medicare (49.2% [95% CI, 47.7%-50.6%]) or Medicaid (39.2% [95% CI, 36.3%-42.1%]) insurance received a follow-up colonoscopy. A quality performance measure that tracks rates of follow-up within 6 months of an abnormal SBT result was observed to be feasible, valid, and reliable, with a median reliability statistic between HCOs of 94.5% (range, 74.3%-99.7%).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this observational study of 20 581 adults suggest that a measure of follow-up colonoscopy within defined periods after an abnormal result of an SBT test for CRC is warranted based on low current performance rates and would be feasible to collect by health systems and produce valid, reliable results

<div><p>Aims</p><p>To determine the mechanisms by which the α<sub>1A</sub>-adrenergic receptor (AR) regulates cardiac contractility.</p><p>Background</p><p>We reported previously that transgenic mice with cardiac-restricted α<sub>1A</sub>-AR overexpression (α<sub>1A</sub>-TG) exhibit enhanced contractility but not hypertrophy, despite evidence implicating this Gα<sub>q/11</sub>-coupled receptor in hypertrophy.</p><p>Methods</p><p>Contractility, calcium (Ca<sup>2+</sup>) kinetics and sensitivity, and contractile proteins were examined in cardiomyocytes, isolated hearts and skinned fibers from α<sub>1A</sub>-TG mice (170-fold overexpression) and their non-TG littermates (NTL) before and after α<sub>1A</sub>-AR agonist stimulation and blockade, angiotensin II (AngII), and Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibition.</p><p>Results</p><p>Hypercontractility without hypertrophy with α<sub>1A</sub>-AR overexpression is shown to result from increased intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> release in response to agonist, augmenting the systolic amplitude of the intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> concentration [Ca<sup>2+</sup>]<sub>i</sub> transient without changing resting [Ca<sup>2+</sup>]<sub>i</sub>. In the <i>absence</i> of agonist, however, α<sub>1A</sub>-AR overexpression <i>reduced</i> contractility despite unchanged [Ca<sup>2+</sup>]<sub>i</sub>. This hypocontractility is not due to heterologous desensitization: the contractile response to AngII, acting via its Gα<sub>q/11</sub>-coupled receptor, was unaltered. Rather, the hypocontractility is a pleiotropic signaling effect of the α<sub>1A</sub>-AR in the absence of agonist, inhibiting RhoA/ROCK activity, resulting in hypophosphorylation of both myosin phosphatase targeting subunit 1 (MYPT1) and cardiac myosin light chain 2 (cMLC2), reducing the Ca<sup>2+</sup> sensitivity of the contractile machinery: all these effects were rapidly reversed by selective α<sub>1A</sub>-AR blockade. Critically, ROCK inhibition in normal hearts of NTLs without α<sub>1A</sub>-AR overexpression caused hypophosphorylation of both MYPT1 and cMLC2, and rapidly reduced basal contractility.</p><p>Conclusions</p><p>We report for the first time pleiotropic α<sub>1A</sub>-AR signaling and the physiological role of RhoA/ROCK signaling in maintaining contractility in the normal heart.</p></div
Risk of emergency hospital admission in children associated with mental disorders and alcohol misuse in the household: an electronic birth cohort study
Background: Mental disorders and alcohol misuse are common in families but their effects on the physical health of children are not known. We investigated the risk of emergency hospital admissions during childhood associated with living with an adult who has a mental health disorder, or who had an alcohol-related hospital admission. Methods: We did this cohort study in a total population electronic child cohort in Wales, UK, which includes all children who live in Wales or with a mother who is resident in Wales. We used Cox regression to model time to first emergency hospital admission during the first 14 years of life associated with living with an adult who has a mental health disorder, or who had an alcohol-related hospital admission. We adjusted our results for social deprivation and perinatal risk factors.Findings: We included data for 253 717 children with 1 015 614 child-years of follow-up. Living with an adult with a mental disorder was associated with an increased risk of emergency admission for all causes (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1·17, 95% CI 1·16–1·19), for injuries and external causes (1·14, 1·11–1·18), and childhood victimisation (1·55, 1·44–1·67). Children living with a household member who had an alcohol-related hospital admission had a significantly higher risk of emergency admissions for injuries and external causes (aHR 1·13, 95% CI 1·01–1 ·26) and victimisation (1·39, 1·00–1·94), but not for all-cause emergency admissions (1·01, 0·93–1·09).Interpretation: The increased risk of emergency admissions in children associated with mental disorders and alcohol misuse in the household supports the need for policy measures to provide support to families that are affected.Funding: Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, Alcohol Research UK, Public Health Wales

This paper surveys the legal tradition that links Magna Carta with the modern concepts of the rule of law and the limits on government. It documents that the original understanding of the rule of law included substantive commitments to individual freedom and limited government. Then, it attempts at explaining how and why such commitments were lost to a formalist interpretation of the rule of law from 1848 to 1939. The paper concludes by arguing how a revival of the substantive commitments of the rule of law is central in a project of reshaping modern states
