Efecto del glicerol sobre los lípidos de la alga roja Gratelupia doryphora
The red alga Gratelupia doryphora was cultivated in Provasoli enricher (plain) seawater and in a glycerol media. The incubation in seawater leads to an increase in the percentage of polyunsaturated acids, while the glycerol increase the total lipid content. If the alga is being grown as a heterotrophic culture, it is possible to increase the alga biomass as well as the content of biologically-active fatty acids.Se cultivó alga roja Gratelupia doryphora en agua de mar enriquecida con Provasoli y en glicerol. La incubación en agua de mar condujo a un aumento en el porcentaje de los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados, mientras que el glicerol incrementó el contenido de lípidos totales. Exploring the Impact of Galaxy Interactions over Seven Billion Years with CAS
We explore galaxy assembly over the last seven billion years by
characterizing "normal" galaxies along the Hubble sequence, against strongly
disturbed merging/interacting galaxies with the widely used CAS system of
concentration (C), asymmetry (A), and 'clumpiness' (S) parameters, as well as
visual classification. We analyze Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS images of
~4000 intermediate and high mass (> 10^9 solar masses) galaxies from the GEMS
survey, one of the largest HST surveys conducted to date in two filters. We
explore the effectiveness of the CAS criteria [A>S and A>~0.35] in separating
normal and strongly disturbed galaxies at different redshifts, and quantify the
recovery and contamination rate. We also compare the average star formation
rate and the cosmic star formation rate density as a function of redshift

Obscured star formation in intermediate-density environments:A Spitzer study of the Abell 901/902 supercluster
We explore the amount of obscured star formation as a function of environment in the Abell 901/902 (A901/902) supercluster at z = 0.165 in conjunction with a field sample drawn from the A901 and CDFS fields, imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Space Telescope A901/902 Galaxy Evolution Survey and Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) Survey. We combine the combo-17 near-UV/optical SED with Spitzer 24 mu m photometry to estimate both the unobscured and obscured star formation in galaxies with M-* > 10(10) M-circle dot. We find that the star formation activity in massive galaxies is suppressed in dense environments, in agreement with previous studies. Yet, nearly 40% of the star-forming (SF) galaxies have red optical colors at intermediate and high densities. These red systems are not starbursting; they have star formation rates (SFRs) per unit stellar mass similar to or lower than blue SF galaxies. More than half of the red SF galaxies have low infrared-to-ultraviolet (IR-to-UV) luminosity ratios, relatively high Sersicindices, and they are equally abundant at all densities. They might be gradually quenching their star formation, possibly but not necessarily under the influence of gas-removing environmental processes. The other greater than or similar to 40% of the red SF galaxies have high IR-to-UV luminosity ratios, indicative of high dust obscuration. They have relatively high specific SFRs and are more abundant at intermediate densities. Our results indicate that while there is an overall suppression in the SF galaxy fraction with density, the small amount of star formation surviving the cluster environment is to a large extent obscured, suggesting that environmental interactions trigger a phase of obscured star formation, before complete quenching
Caracterização geológica e petrológica preliminar do vulcanismo ácido da região de Campos Novos, Santa Catarina
Geological mapping on a scale of 1:50,000 was carried out in an area of 1800 km2, located in the central part of the Videira and Barracão Sheets in the Campos Novos, Celso Ramos and Anita Garibaldi municipalities, Santa Catarina. Five basic flows followed by six acidic units, similar to ignimbrites, were recognized and comprise a 500- to 600- m thick pile. Petrographic and major element geochemical data reveal the tholeitic character of the association and its relationship with low-titanium basalts and Palmas-type acidic rocks. Preliminary petrogenetic study suggests that the acid rocks originated by partial melting of a gabbroic parent which may be the intrusive equivalent of the basic flows of the study area.Trabalhos de mapeamento geológico em escala 1:50.000 foram realizados numa área de 1800 km2, localizada na região centro-sul do estado de Santa Catarina, cobrindo parte das folhas de Videira e Barracão, nos municípios de Campos Novos, Celso Ramos e Anita Garibaldi. Foram reconhecidos 5 derrames básicos sobrepostos por 6 unidades ácidas do tipo ignimbrito, perfazendo um pacote com espessura de 500 a 600 metros. Estudos petrográficos e litoquímicos de elementos maiores revelam o caráter toleítico da associação e sua correlação com os basaltos baixo-titânio e ácidas tipo Palmas. Um ensaio petrogenético preliminar sugere a origem das rochas ácidas por fusão parcial de uma fonte gabróica que pode ser o correspondente intrusivo dos derrames básicos registrados na área estudada
Troppo - A Python framework for the reconstruction of context-specific metabolic models
The surge in high-throughput technology availability for molecular biology has enabled the development of powerful predictive tools for use in many applications, including (but not limited to) the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases such as cancer. Genome-scale metabolic models have shown some promise in clearing a path towards precise and personalized medicine, although some challenges still persist. The integration of omics data and subsequent creation of context-specific models for specific cells/tissues still poses a significant hurdle, and most current tools for this purpose have been implemented using proprietary software. Here, we present a new software tool developed in Python, troppo - Tissue-specific RecOnstruction and Phenotype Prediction using Omics data, implementing a large variety of context-specific reconstruction algorithms. Active Disk Building in a local HI-Massive LIRG: The Synergy between Gas, Dust, and Star Formation
HIZOA J0836-43 is the most HI-massive (M_HI = 7.5x10^10 Msun) galaxy detected
in the HIPASS volume and lies optically hidden behind the Milky Way. Markedly
different from other extreme HI disks in the local universe, it is a luminous
infrared galaxy (LIRG) with an actively star forming disk (>50 kpc), central to
its ~ 130 kpc gas disk, with a total star formation rate (SFR) of ~20.5 Msun
yr^{-1}. Spitzer spectroscopy reveals an unusual combination of powerful
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission coupled to a relatively weak
warm dust continuum, suggesting photodissociation region (PDR)-dominated
emission. Compared to a typical LIRG with similar total infrared luminosity
(L_TIR=10^11 Lsun), the PAHs in HIZOA J0836-43 are more than twice as strong,
whereas the warm dust continuum (lambda > 20micron) is best fit by a star
forming galaxy with L_TIR=10^10 Lsun. Mopra CO observations suggest an extended
molecular gas component (H_2 + He > 3.7x10^9 Msun) and a lower limit of ~ 64%
for the gas mass fraction; this is above average compared to local disk
systems, but similar to that of z~1.5 BzK galaxies (~57%). However, the star
formation efficiency (SFE = L_IR/L'_CO) for HIZOA J0836-43 of 140 Lsun (K km
s^{-1} pc^2)^{-1} is similar to that of local spirals and other disk galaxies
at high redshift, in strong contrast to the increased SFE seen in merging and
strongly interacting systems. HIZOA J0836-43 is actively forming stars and
building a massive stellar disk. Its evolutionary phase of star formation
(M_stellar, SFR, gas fraction) compared to more distant systems suggests that
it would be considered typical at redshift z~1. This galaxy provides a rare
opportunity in the nearby universe for studying (at z~0.036) how disks were
building and galaxies evolving at z~1, when similarly large gas fractions were

Tidal Dwarf Galaxies at Intermediate Redshifts
We present the first attempt at measuring the production rate of tidal dwarf
galaxies (TDGs) and estimating their contribution to the overall dwarf
population. Using HST/ACS deep imaging data from GOODS and GEMS surveys in
conjunction with photometric redshifts from COMBO-17 survey, we performed a
morphological analysis for a sample of merging/interacting galaxies in the
Extended Chandra Deep Field South and identified tidal dwarf candidates in the
rest-frame optical bands. We estimated a production rate about 1.4 {\times}
10^{-5} per Gyr per comoving volume for long-lived TDGs with stellar mass 3
{\times} 10^{8-9} solar mass at 0.5<z<1.1. Together with galaxy merger rates
and TDG survival rate from the literature, our results suggest that only a
marginal fraction (less than 10%) of dwarf galaxies in the local universe could
be tidally-originated. TDGs in our sample are on average bluer than their host
galaxies in the optical. Stellar population modelling of optical to
near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for two TDGs favors a burst
component with age 400/200 Myr and stellar mass 40%/26% of the total,
indicating that a young stellar population newly formed in TDGs. This is
