    Histochemistry for the research in veterinary science: the legacy of Giuseppe Aureli

    Twenty years ago, on April 24th 1984, Giuseppe Aureli, Founding Member and President of the Italian Society of Histochemistry from 1971 to 1973, Director of the Institute of Anatomy of Domestic Animals, Histology and Embryology and Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Milan, died suddenly and before his time. Following in the footsteps of Carlo Bignardi, he started from the time he was a student, to deal with the research approaches of Maffo Vialli, founder of histochemistry in Italy Head in Milan of a skilled group of scientists, he developed a sound and reliable research school mainly based on the use of ever more advanced histochemical and cytochemical techniques to study, in the extensive area of veterinary science, different problems aimed at developing either basic knowledge or animal production

    Extensive carrier testing and CF birth prevalence: evidence for a negative correlation

    Aim of the study was to evaluate if extensive CF carrier testing may be connected with the progressive decrease of CF birth incidence recorded in North Eastern Italy. From 1993 to 2007 an average 52,000 newborns per year underwent Neonatal Screening (NS), and 198 newborns with CF were detected (1/3937). A time related contraction in birth prevalence was confirmed, with an average annual percent decrease of 0.15 per 10,000 neonates (Poisson regression analysis p 0.003). In the NS area two sections were identified: the Western Region (WR), where CF carrier testing is not offered to couples from the general population, and the Eastern Region (ER), where CF carrier testing is widely offered to couples from the general population. In ER from 1995 to 2007 such testing practice has been steadily expanding, with a total of 87,721 CF carrier tests performed, 3460 carriers identified, and 238 carrier couples detected (data collection in progress). The prevalence of CF decreased by time (p<0.001) but the rate of decrease was more enhanced in ER as suggested by the existence of a statistically significant (p = 0.014) interaction term between time and region in the Poisson regression model. The overall negative trend in North Eastern Italy is due to a contraction of CF births in its Eastern part. In ER a negative correlation was found between CF incidence and the number of carrier tests (p 0.012). Prenatal diagnosis data collection is in progress. These data support the hypothesis that carrier screening may modify the incidence of CF

    Learning from Demonstration and Safe Cobotics Using Digital Twins

    The use of collaborative robots, or cobots, is nowadays continually increasing, especially in the small- and medium-sized manufacturing sector. For each particular use case, the integration and deployment of a cobot into a collaborative workspace faces a certain number of challenges. Programming industrial robots, for example, can be a relatively complex and time-consuming task. In this paper we report an accurate method to robot programming by using an optimized “learning from demonstration” technique. The operator/programmer performs in real-time the corresponding task to be automatized, and by means of a tracker sensor the programmer’s motions are captured and transmitted to the robot; the robot registers the trajectories and is now able to reproduce the human movements with high accuracy. Another fundamental issue for cobot deployment is safety. In this paper, we also present a virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) environment to facilitate the design and operation of cobots in order to maximize human safety. The virtual reality environment operates as an aide tool during the design phase. The human operator and the robot’s digital twin work side-by-side while executing a collaborative task in a virtual reality space. Their movements are controlled and registered, and after a given period of test time, the data is analyzed to suggest modifications to ensure a safe workspace (collision free) and to increase productivity. For the regular real-time cobot operation, an augmented reality environment was developed, again, with the purpose of assuring a safe human-robot collaboration. The augmented reality environment keeps tracking permanently the cobot and the human manipulations. This system produces audio and visual alarm signals in unsafe situations and is also able to take actions, such as slowing down or stopping the robot, to preserve the physical integrity of the human operator

    Socioeconomic inequalities in low birth weight risk before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina: A cross-sectional study

    Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have exacerbated existing socioe- conomic inequalities in health. In Argentina, public hospitals serve the poorest uninsured segment of the population, while private hospitals serve patients with health insurance. This study aimed to assess whether socioeconomic inequalities in low birth weight (LBW) risk changed during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This multicenter cross-sectional study included 15929 infants. A difference-in-difference (DID) analysis of socioeconomic inequalities between public and private hospitals in LBW risk in a pandemic cohort (March 20 to July 19, 2020) was compared with a prepandemic cohort (March 20 to July 19, 2019) by using medical records obtained from ten hospitals. Infants were categorized by weight as LBW < 2500 g, very low birth weight (VLBW) < 1500 g and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) < 1000 g. Log binomial regression was performed to estimate risk differences with an interaction term representing the DID estimator. Covariate-adjusted models included potential perinatal confounders. Findings: Of the 8437 infants in the prepandemic cohort, 4887 (57 ? 9%) were born in public hospitals. The pandemic cohort comprised 7492 infants, 4402 (58 ? 7%) of whom were born in public hospitals. The DID estimators indicated no differences between public versus private hospitals for LBW risk ( −1 ? 8% [95% CI −3 ? 6, 0 ? 0]) and for ELBW risk ( −0 ? 1% [95% CI −0 ? 6, 0 ? 3]). Significant differences were found between public versus private hospitals in the DID estimators ( −1 ? 2% [95% CI, −2 ? 1, −0 ? 3]) for VLBW risk. The results were comparable in covariate-adjusted models. Interpretation: In this study, we found evidence of decreased disparities between public and private hos- pitals in VLBW risk. Our findings suggest that measures that prioritize social spending to protect the most vulnerable pregnant women during the pandemic contributed to better birth outcomes.     Association between COVID-19 mandatory lockdown and decreased incidence of preterm births and neonatal mortality

    Previous studies suggest a decrease in preterm births (PTB) during de coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), possibly due to the effect of the mandatory lockdown. Nevertheless, other reports have been unable to confirm this finding. Most of these studies originated in high-income countries and evaluated a limited number of potential confounders, and all of them assessed a short lockdown period. In addition, an important question remains unanswered: How can we be sure that the observed changes are due to lockdown, when most of the pregnancies delivered in the lockdown period were conceived prior to it?To date there is insufficient evidence to support the notion that public health interventions during the lockdown prevent PTB . The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of PTB, neonatal mortality (NM) and stillbirths adjusted by potential confounders during the lockdown period assessing a time window of nine and a half months during which all the pregnancies analyzed in the exposed group were conceived after the lockdown, with the corresponding incidence in the previous year where all the unexposed pregnancies analyzed were conceived before the lockdown.publishedVersionFil: Cuestas, Eduardo.     Brettanomyces bruxellensis yeasts: impact on wine and winemaking

    Yeasts belonging to the Brettanomyces/Dekkera genus are non-conventional yeasts, which affect winemaking by causing wine spoilage all over the world. This mini-review focuses on recent results concerning the presence of Brettanomyces bruxellensis throughout the wine processing chain. Here, culture-dependent and independent methods to detect this yeast on grapes and at the very early stage of wine production are encompassed. Chemical, physical and biological tools, devised for the prevention and control of such a detrimental species during winemaking are also presented. Finally, the mini-review identifies future research areas relevant to the improvement of wine safety and sensory profiles

    Antibiotic resistance determinants in the interplay between food and gut microbiota

    A complex and heterogeneous microflora performs sugar and lactic acid fermentations in food products. Depending on the fermentable food matrix (dairy, meat, vegetable etc.) as well as on the species composition of the microbiota, specific combinations of molecules are produced that confer unique flavor, texture, and taste to each product. Bacterial populations within such “fermented food microbiota” are often of environmental origin, they persist alive in foods ready for consumption, eventually reaching the gastro-intestinal tract where they can interact with the resident gut microbiota of the host. Although this interaction is mostly of transient nature, it can greatly contribute to human health, as several species within the food microbiota also display probiotic properties. Such an interplay between food and gut microbiota underlines the importance of the microbiological quality of fermented foods, as the crowded environment of the gut is also an ideal site for genetic exchanges among bacteria. Selection and spreading of antibiotic resistance genes in foodborne bacteria has gained increasing interest in the past decade, especially in light of the potential transferability of antibiotic resistance determinants to opportunistic pathogens, natural inhabitants of the human gut but capable of acquiring virulence in immunocompromised individuals. This review aims at describing major findings and future prospects in the field, especially after the use of antibiotics as growth promoters was totally banned in Europe, with special emphasis on the application of genomic technologies to improve quality and safety of fermented foods

    Consensus on the use and interpretation of cystic fibrosis mutation analysis in clinical practice

    It is often challenging for the clinician interested in cystic fibrosis (CF) to interpret molecular genetic results, and to integrate them in the diagnostic process. The limitations of genotyping technology, the choice of mutations to be tested, and the clinical context in which the test is administered can all influence how genetic information is interpreted. This paper describes the conclusions of a consensus conference to address the use and interpretation of CF mutation analysis in clinical settings

    Cet article analyse les représentations et les expériences de jeunes américains participants d’un programme d’éducation internationale à Buenos Aires, par rapport aux modèles, représentations et les rapports de genre et de sexualité qu’on observe et vive dans la culture locale argentine. Avec une méthodologie qualitative, entre 2012 et 2014, on a recueilli les témoignages écrits et oraux de 50 étudiants, hommes et femmes, par rapport aux sujets tels que les galanteries/harcèlements dans les rues, le machisme en Amérique du sud, l’allaitement en public, les idéelles corporelles, ces aspects nous ont permis réfléchir par rapports aux stéréotypes culturels dans lesquels convergent le genre, l’ethnicité, la classe, et la nationalité.             Este artigo analisa as representações e as experiências de jovens estadunidenses participantes de um programa de educação internacional em Buenos Aires, com relação aos modelos, representações e relações de gênero e de sexualidade que observam e vivem na cultura local argentina. Com uma metodologia qualitativa, recolheram-se depoimentos escritos e orais de 50 estudantes, homens e mulheres, entre 2012 e 2014, sobre temas como as paqueras/assédio de rua, o machismo latino-americano, a amamentação em público, os ideais corporais, questões que permitiram refletir sobre estereótipos culturais nos quais confluem o gênero, o étnico, a classe e a nacionalidade.Este artículo analiza las representaciones y experiencias de jóvenes estadounidenses participantes de un programa de educación internacional en Buenos Aires, en relación con los modelos, representaciones y relaciones de género y de sexualidad que observan y viven en la cultura local argentina. Con una metodología cualitativa, entre 2012 y 2014, se recogieron testimonios escritos y orales de 50 estudiantes, varones y mujeres, sobre temas como los piropos/acoso callejero, el machismo latinoamericano, el amamantamiento en público, los ideales corporales, cuestiones que permitieron reflexionar sobre estereotipos culturales en los que confluyen el género, la etnicidad, la clase y la nacionalidad.This article analyzes the representations and experiences of young Americans participating in a program of international education in Buenos Aires, in relation to the models, representations and gender and sexuality issues they observe and live in the local culture from Argentina. With a qualitative methodology, between 2012 and 2014, written and oral testimonies of 50 students (men and women) were collected. These testimonies reflected on topics such as compliments / street harassment, Latinamerican machismo, breastfeeding in public spaces, and body ideals.
