    This dissertation analyzes the basalt ground stone industry at the archaeological site of Tres Zapotes, Mexico. Artifacts and by-products were recovered in the excavations conducted by a University of Kentucky project directed by Christopher Pool. All contexts were examined, and the corpus of this study comprises the whole sequence of production, use, and discards of basalt such as by-products of manufacture, unfinished and finished tools, and discarded artifacts. In this opportunity was possible to study over time a change from the Early/Middle Formative period (Olmec occupation) a centralized and exclusionary political economic system to the Late/Terminal Formative period (Epi-Olmec occupation) when there was a corporate system. This work applied contemporary concepts in social sciences such as agency, practice theory, technological choice, and chaîne opératoire. The variation of raw materials over time was studied recoding physical characteristics and a sample of artifacts was analyzed with X-ray florescence in order to see variation in acquisition of rocks over time

    Bionomics and insecticides resistance profiling of malaria vectors at a selected site for experimental hut trials in central Cameroon.

    BACKGROUND Malaria vectors are increasingly developing resistance to insecticides across Africa. The impact of such resistance on the continued effectiveness of insecticide-based interventions remains unclear due to poor characterization of vector populations. This study reports the characterization of malaria vectors at Mibellon, a selected site in Cameroon for experimental hut study, including species composition, Plasmodium infection rate, resistance profiles and mechanisms. METHODS Indoor resting blood-fed Anopheles mosquitoes were collected from houses at Mibellon in 2017 and forced to lay eggs to generate F adult mosquitoes. Insecticides susceptibility bioassays were performed on the F adult mosquitoes following the WHO protocol to assess resistance profile to insecticides. The molecular basis of resistance and Plasmodium infection rate were investigated using TaqMan genotyping. RESULTS Anopheles funestus sensu stricto (s.s.) was predominant in Mibellon (80%) followed by Anopheles gambiae s.s. (20%). High levels of resistance to pyrethroids and organochlorides were observed for both species. Moderate resistance was observed against bendiocarb (carbamate) in both species, but relatively higher in An. gambiae s.s. In contrast, full susceptibility was recorded for the organophosphate malathion. The PBO synergist assays with permethrin and deltamethrin revealed a significant recovery of the susceptibility in Anopheles funestus s.s. population (48.8 to 98.1% mortality and 38.3 to 96.5% mortality, respectively). The DDT/pyrethroid 119F-GSTe2 resistant allele (28.1%) and the dieldrin 296S-RDL resistant (9.7%) were detected in An. funestus s.s. The high pyrethroid/DDT resistance in An. gambiae correlated with the high frequency of 1014F knockdown resistance allele (63.9%). The 1014S-kdr allele was detected at low frequency (1.97%). The Plasmodium infection rate was 20% in An. gambiae, whereas An. funestus exhibited an oocyst rate of 15 and 5% for the sporozoite rate. CONCLUSION These results highlight the increasing spread of insecticide resistance and the challenges that control programmes face to maintain the continued effectiveness of insecticide-based interventions

    Formation, contraction, and mechanotransduction of myofribrils in cardiac development: clues from genetics

    Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect in humans. It is a leading infant mortality factor worldwide, caused by defective cardiac development. Mutations in transcription factors, signalling and structural molecules have been shown to contribute to the genetic component of CHD. Recently, mutations in genes encoding myofibrillar proteins expressed in the embryonic heart have also emerged as an important genetic causative factor of the disease, which implies that the contraction of the early heart primordium contributes to its morphogenesis. This notion is supported by increasing evidence suggesting that not only contraction but also formation, mechanosensing, and mechanotransduction of the cardiac myofibrillar proteins influence heart development.     Hidrodinámica de un sistema arrecifal coralino en el oeste del Golfo de México

    The acoustic Doppler current profiler, temperature, salinity and density data set were recorded monthly over the course of a year in a tropical coral reef system to elucidate the effects of abrupt bathymetric changes on current variability and surface temperature over time. A minimum of five transect repetitions were performed during one diurnal tidal cycle each month during the year 2008. According to the empirical orthogonal functions, the dominant terms were advection and friction due to the shallowness of the system and the relatively short continental shelf located in front of the Port of Veracruz (Mexico). The data showed the dominance of the northwest-southeast current velocity components (parallel to the coast) attributed to the winds. The southeastward current velocity was the dominant component throughout the year, followed by the northwestward current velocity component. The data suggested that coral reefs produce current rectification near the shallow reef areas (1 m depth). No correlation existed between surface temperature and the chlorophyll-a levels throughout the year. Residual current velocities throughout the year never reached more than 50 cm –1 during the sampling periods, and the surface temperature varied from 21 to 30°C, with the highest temperature being observed near the coast and reefs. Finally there was a direct correlation of the northeasterly and strong northwesterly winds with the well-mixed cold-salty water column in the reef area.Las corrientes marinas, la temperatura del agua, la salinidad y densidad del mar fueron registradas mensualmente a lo largo de un año, en un sistema de arrecifes coralinos del Golfo de México, para obtener los efectos de los cambios batimétricos sobre la variabilidad de las corrientes marinas y de la temperatura superficial. Se realizó un mínimo de cinco repeticiones, para cada transecto durante un ciclo de marea diurna, de forma mensual durante el 2008. De acuerdo con las Funciones Ortogonales Empíricas (EOF), los términos dominantes fueron la advección y la fricción. Esto se debió a la poca profundidad del sistema (< 45 m) y a la plataforma continental, relativamente corta, situada frente al puerto de Veracruz (México). Los datos mostraron que la componente de velocidad dominante en el sistema es paralela a la costa (sureste-noroeste) principalmente debido al régimen de vientos. La dirección de la velocidad de la corriente dominante fue hacia el sureste seguida por el componente noroeste. Los datos sugieren que los arrecifes de coral producen una rectificación de la corriente cerca de las zonas de arrecifes poco profundas (1 m de profundidad). No se encontró en este estudio una correlación entre la temperatura de la superficie y los niveles de clorofila-a lo largo del año. Las velocidades de las corriente residual a lo largo del año no rebasaron los 50 cm s–1 durante los períodos de muestreo, y la temperatura superficial variaron de 21 a 30°C. La temperatura más alta se observó cerca de la costa y los arrecifes. Por último, existe una correlación directa entre los vientos del noroeste con la columna de agua mezclada (fría y salada) en el área muestreada

    Two new species of Pambolus (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) from Jamaica

    Pambolus albospina sp. n. and Pambolus rastafari sp. n. are described from Jamaica. Pambolus rastafari can be distinguished from all other Neotropical species of the genus by its antennal color pattern and the smooth sculpture of the head and mesoscutum. Pambolus albospina is morphologically close to P. hemitaeniatus van Achterberg, from which it can be distinguished by the number of white antennal segments and the sculpture on the first metasomal tergite.     The P450 CYP6Z1 confers carbamate/pyrethroid cross-resistance in a major African malaria vector beside a novel carbamate-insensitive N485I acetylcholinesterase-1 mutation

    Carbamates are increasingly used for vector control notably in areas with pyrethroid resistance. However, a cross-resistance between these insecticides in major malaria vectors such as Anopheles funestus could severely limit available resistance management options. Unfortunately, the molecular basis of such cross-resistance remains uncharacterized in An. funestus, preventing effective resistance management. Here, using a genome-wide transcription profiling, we revealed that metabolic resistance through up-regulation of cytochrome P450 genes is driving carbamate resistance. The P450s CYP6P9a, CYP6P9b and CYP6Z1 were the most up-regulated detoxification genes in the multiple resistant mosquitoes. However, in silico docking simulations predicted CYP6Z1 to metabolise both pyrethroids and carbamates, whereas CYP6P9a and CYP6P9b were predicted to metabolise only the pyrethroids. Using recombinant enzyme metabolism and inhibition assays we demonstrated that CYP6Z1 metabolizes bendiocarb and pyrethroids, whereas CYP6P9a and CYP6P9b metabolise only the pyrethroids. Other up-regulated gene families in resistant mosquitoes included several cuticular protein genes suggesting a possible reduced penetration resistance mechanism. Investigation of the target-site resistance in acetylcholinesterase 1 (ace-1) gene detected and established the association between the new N485I mutation and bendiocarb resistance (Odds ratio 7.3; P<0.0001). The detection of multiple haplotypes in single mosquitoes after cloning suggested the duplication of ace-1. A TaqMan genotyping of the N485I in nine countries revealed that the mutation is located only in Southern Africa with frequency of 10-15% suggesting its recent occurrence. These findings will help in monitoring the spread and evolution of carbamate resistance and improve the design of effective resistance management strategies to control this malaria vector

    Adesão ao tratamento dos usuários portadores de diabetes mellitus da Unidade de saúde da família Maria das Dores Silva no município de Belo Vale

    O presente trabalho surgiu da necessidade de garantir a adesão ao tratamento de Diabetes Mellitus (DM) em pacientes da Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS) Maria das Dores do Município Belo Vale. Em nossa área de abrangência atinge 157 pessoas, das quais o 29,9% estão descompensadas. Objetivou, elaborar proposta de intervenção para melhorar a adesão ao tratamento para o controle dos usuários diagnosticados com Diabetes Mellitus e descompensados. Para a elaboração do plano utilizou-se o Método do Planejamento Estratégico Situacional (PES) e fez-se a revisão bibliográfica do tema com os descritores: Diabetes Mellitus, prevenção e controle, estratégia saúde da família, planejamento em saúde. Acredita-se que com aplicação do plano de intervenção será possível melhorar a condição de saúde dos usuários portadores de DM e familiar, da comunidade, ocasionando maior bem estar aos envolvidos
