Men and women with chronic insomnia disorder and OSAS : different responses to CPAP
Objective: To evaluate the response to CPAP in patients with chronic insomnia disorder (CID) with OSAS in an unselected patient population including all OSAS severity groups. As a secondary objective, we also wanted to evaluate the differences between patients that improve insomnia symptoms with CPAP and patients that do not improve, specifically evaluating possible gender differences.
Methods: Retrospective study of patients with a diagnosis of OSAS treated with CPAP and CID at the first clinical visit, selected from a database of an outpatient sleep clinic of University Hospital.
Results: From a database of total of 827 patient, 90 patients were identified with OSAS and CID (53.3% women). Middle / moderate OSAS was diagnosed in 68.9% and severe OSA in 31.1%. Most patients (61.1%) improved insomnia symptoms after CPAP therapy. In the responders group, 58.2% had initial insomnia, 63.6% middle insomnia and 12.7% late insomnia. Responders to CPAP were more frequently women (women 61.8%, men 38.2%, p = 0.035) and there was no other difference between responders and non-responders. On subgroup analysis, this difference was significant only in severe OSAS (women 88.9%, men 31.6%, p = 0.013).
Conclusion: In most patients with CID and OSA, there is a consistent reduction of insomnia symptoms with the CPAP use. This factor emphasizes the importance of performing PSG in CID. Insomnia in men with severe OSAS responds less frequently to CPAP suggesting that in these cases the insomnia phenotype is less dependent on the respiratory symptoms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Avaliação do perfil de biomarcadores enzimáticos em Sardina pilchardus
Mestrado em Biologia Aplicada - Biologia MarinhaAs sardinhas (Sardina pilchardus) capturadas no Atlântico Nordeste são um recurso alimentar comum em Portugal. No entanto, o efeito de potenciais compostos antropogénicos nesta espécie nunca foi avaliado, nem tão pouco foi avaliado o eventual efeito destes compostos em sardinhas capturadas em diferentes locais da costa portuguesa. Tendo em conta a importância da sardinha para o consumo humano, torna-se relevante caracterizar as suas respostas fisiológicas à contaminação. Sendo amplamente capturadas na costa Portuguesa, é importante conhecer em detalhe os padrões de resposta de sardinha à contaminação química, bem como a variabilidade intrínseca (ex: ciclo reprodutivo e estado nutricional) e extrínseca (ex: influência de factores abióticos) dos níveis de resposta. O presente trabalho pretendeu monitorizar mensalmente alterações fisiológicas/adaptativas de Sardina pilchardus no Atlântico Norte, descarregadas em três portos comerciais portugueses (Matosinhos, Aveiro e Peniche), durante um período de nove meses (Maio 2010 – Janeiro 2011). Para tal, utilizou-se uma abordagem de quantificação de biomarcadores (catalase - CAT, glutationa-S-transferase - GSTs; lactato desidrogenase - LDH; acetilcolinesterase – AChE), que foram relacionados com indicadores de estado nutricional, reprodutivo, e fisiológico (índices de condição, K, K (gut), K (liver); índice gonadossomático, GSI; índice hepatossomático, HSI). Assim, o objectivo do presente trabalho foi o de perceber de que forma o uso de biomarcadores, enquanto ferramenta de avaliação da exposição a contaminantes, é afectado pela variabilidade natural (população/zona geográfica e ciclo de vida/sazonalidade).
Os resultados apontam para alguma variação entre áreas geográficas distintas, mas o principal contributo para a variação dos dados foi a sazonalidade. Os níveis de LDH, na globalidade, foram significativamente mais elevados durante o período mais quente (Maio a Setembro), tendo a partir daí decrescido até Janeiro, ao passo que a actividade da AChE variou mensalmente, mas sem um padrão perceptível. As actividades de CAT e GSTs aumentaram gradualmente de Maio a Setembro, tendo diminuído a partir do mês de Setembro. A análise de correlação revelou uma associação significativa entre os biomarcadores e vários índices do estado fisiológico e reprodutivo. Esta associação foi consistente entre populações: a LDH pareceu estar relacionada com o factor de condição (K), ao passo que a CAT e GSTs se relacionaram com o GSI e, no caso das GSTs, também com o HSI e estado nutricional. Os dados apontam claramente para uma grande influência do ciclo reprodutivo na actividade de várias enzimas usadas como biomarcadores.

However, the effect of potential anthropogenic compounds in the species was never evaluated, nor the effect of such compounds in fish captured off the Portuguese coast. Bearing in mind the importance of sardine for human consumption, it is important to characterise their physiological responses to contamination. Thus, it seems vital to study the response patterns of sardines to chemical contamination, as well as the intrinsic (ex: reproductive cycle and nutritional state) and extrinsic (variation in abiotic factors) variability in the levels of response.
The present work intended to monitor physiological/adaptive alterations in Sardina pilchardus in three distinct locations in the North Atlantic, using freshly caught sardines obtained in three Portuguese fishing ports (Matosinhos, Aveiro and Peniche). This was performed on a monthly basis, for a period of nine months (May 2010 – January 2011). To do so, a biomarker approach (catalase – CAT, glutathione S-transferases – GST, lactate dehydrogenase – LDH, and acetylcholinesterase – AChE) was used, and these biochemical parameters were correlated with nutritional, reproductive, and physiological state indicators (condition factors, K, K (gut), K (liver); gonadosomatic index, GSI; hepatosomatic index, HSI). Thus, the goal of the present thesis was to understand how the use of biomarkers, as a tool in the evaluation of contaminant exposure, is affected by natural variability in sardine populations (population/geographic area and life cycle/seasonality).
Our results point towards some variation among distinct geographical areas/populations, but the main contribution in the variation of the data was due to seasonality. LDH values, overall, were significantly higher during the warmer period (May to September), decreasing from there onwards until January. AChE activity varied monthly but no consistent pattern emerged. CAT and GSTs activities gradually increased from May to September, decreasing from September onwards. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between biomarkers and physiological and reproductive state. This association was consistent among populations: LDH was related to condition factor (K), while CAT and GSTs were correlated to GSI and, in the case of GSTs, also with HSI and nutritional state. Our data clearly point out a large influence of the reproductive cycle in the activity of several enzymes, normally used as biomarkers of environmental contamination
Programa sobre uso de rúbricas en la evaluación formativa de estudiantes de una escuela de educación superior pedagógica, Abancay 2023
El objetivo del presente trabajo de investigación, fue determinar de qué manera
influye el programa sobre uso de rúbricas en la evaluación formativa en estudiantes
de una escuela de educación superior pedagógica, Abancay 2023. El estudio tuvo
como fundamento el paradigma positivista; la metodología fue de enfoque
cuantitativo y diseño cuasi experimental, en una muestra de 76 estudiantes, el
instrumento fue un cuestionario con veintiún preguntas, los cuales pasaron por un
proceso de confiabilidad y validez; los resultados demostraron que después de
aplicar al grupo experimental diez sesiones de aprendizaje con rúbricas de
evaluación formativa alcanzó un 98,1% en el nivel logrado, mediante la aplicación
de la prueba U de Mann-Whitney (p<0.05) se determinó que el programa sobre uso
de rúbricas influye significativamente en la evaluación formativa de los estudiantes
de una escuela de educación superior pedagógica, Abancay 2023
Dream recall frequency and content in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy
Purpose: To evaluate morning dream recall frequency and content in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).
Methods: Fifty-two patients with pharmacoresistant TLE submitted to a written dream diary during five consecutive days and continuous video–electroencephalographic (video-EEG) monitoring. A matched control group of 41 healthy subjects completed the same diary at home. The number of recalled dreams (including long dreams) and nonrecalled dream mentation were collected, and the Dream Recall Rate (DRR) was calculated. Hall and Van de Castle dream content analysis was performed.
Key Findings: Greater than 70% of patients with TLE (37 of 52) recall their dreams, but DRR rate in these patients is lower than in controls (p £ 0.001). Dream recall does not appear to be influenced by the presence of neuropsychological deficits nor seizure frequency. In dreams descriptions, TLE patients (vs. controls) have a higher percentage of familiarity in settings and fewer dreams with at least one success.
Significance: Onirical activity of patients with TLE is different from that of healthy subjects. Our results support
the role of mesial and neocortical temporal structures in dream experience. The selective activation of dysfunctional mesial structures may be responsible for some of the observed variability. La formación de profesores: formación contínua o formación postgraduada? Perspectivas de profesores y de líderes de las escuelas
The education is essential for the acquisition of specific knowledge by teachers. The main goal of this investigation is to study the impact of post-graduated education in a group of primary and secondary teachers in a cluster of public schools and in a private one. It’s our goal to comprehend if teachers consider this training as an added value and in what measure this is interpreted as an improvement to their professional development, to schools and to the students learning.In this qualitative investigation that emerges from a wider investigation, located on an interpretative paradigm, different methodological procedures were adopted which allowed us, through the collected data, to comprehend, question, discuss and reflect about the different contributions of post-graduate education and to acknowledge the effects of this training for the development of professional skills in the different pedagogical practices.This article discusses the questions that emerged along the investigation related to the continuous education of teachers, here confronted with the perspectives of post-graduate education, considering the point of view of teachers that attended this training as well as the school managers, all supported by empirical data. La formación es esencial para la adquisición de conocimientos específicos de la profesión docente. La investigación llevada a cabo tiene como problema central el impacto de la frecuencia de los cursos de post-grado en un número de maestros de primaria (EB) y educación secundaria (ES) de un Grupo de Escuelas[1] público y de un colegio privado en Portugal. Nuestro objetivo es entender si los profesores consideran esta formación como un valor añadido y en qué medida esto se refleja en la mejora de su desempeño profesional, de las escuelas y del aprendizaje de los estudiantes.Esta investigación de carácter cualitativo, orientada por un paradigma de investigación interpretativo, integra un estudio más amplio sobre el impacto de la formación postgraduada en educación.
