The significance of financial self efficacy in explaining women's personal finance behaviour

Much policy attention has been placed on enhancing individuals' financial knowledge and literacy, chiefly through financial education programs. However, managing one's personal finances takes more than financial knowledge and literacy: an individual also needs a sense of self-assuredness, or 'self-belief', in their own capabilities. This personal attribute is known within the psychology literature as 'self-efficacy'. This paper examines the significance of an individual's financial self-efficacy in explaining their personal finance behaviour, through the application of a psychometric instrument. Using a 2013 survey of Australian women, financial self-efficacy emerges as one of the strongest predictors of the type and number of financial products that a woman holds. Specifically, our analysis reveals that women with higher financial self-efficacy - that is, with greater self-assuredness in their financial management capacities - are more likely to hold investment and savings products, and less likely to hold debt-related products. Even alongside other important factors - such as education, financial risk preferences, age and household income - the explanatory power of financial self-efficacy is found to be significant at the 1% critical level. Moreover, the significance of financial self-efficacy is independently identified from that of financial literacy factors, which bears important implications for the development of policies aiming to improve financial outcomes

A Multidimensional Dynamic Measure of Child Disadvantage: A Methodological Tool for Policymakers

This paper demonstrates the applicability of an innovative approach towards examining child disadvantage, using a holistic, dynamic measure that not only accounts for multiple sources of disadvantage but also for the recurrence and persistence of disadvantage throughout a child's life. We analyse child disadvantage using two longitudinal surveys of the Australian child population, one of which is specific to Indigenous children, who experience notably higher rates of disadvantage. Among Australian children, we detect that poor body weight and bullying-representative of the broad dimensions of health and emotional wellbeing-should be of significant concern to policymakers. Among Indigenous children, housing conditions, schooling and exposure to risky behaviours stand out as areas of concern. By identifying the dimensions in which rates of child disadvantage are most severe, this methodological approach can help steer targeted policy actions

Assessing the Market for Poultry Litter in Georgia: Are Subsidies Needed to Protect Water Quality?

Concerns about nutrient loads into our waters have focused attention on poultry litter applications. Like many states with a large poultry industry, Georgia recently designed a subsidy program to facilitate the transportation of poultry litter out of vulnerable watersheds. This paper uses a transportation model to examine the necessity of a poultry litter subsidy to achieve water protection goals in Georgia. We also demonstrate the relationship between diesel and synthetic fertilizer prices and the value of poultry litter. Visual tracking of small animals in cluttered natural environments using a freely moving camera

Image-based tracking of animals in their natural habitats can provide rich behavioural data, but is very challenging due to complex and dynamic background and target appearances. We present an effective method to recover the positions of terrestrial animals in cluttered environments from video sequences filmed using a freely moving monocular camera. The method uses residual motion cues to detect the targets and is thus robust to different lighting conditions and requires no a-priori appearance model of the animal or environment. The detection is globally optimised based on an inference problem formulation using factor graphs. This handles ambiguities such as occlusions and intersections and provides automatic initialisation. Furthermore, this formulation allows a seamless integration of occasional user input for the most difficult situations, so that the effect of a few manual position estimates are smoothly distributed over long sequences. Testing our system against a benchmark dataset featuring small targets in natural scenes, we obtain 96% accuracy for fully automated tracking. We also demonstrate reliable tracking in a new data set that includes different targets (insects, vertebrates or artificial objects) in a variety of environments (desert, jungle, meadows, urban) using different imaging devices (day / night vision cameras, smart phones) and modalities (stationary, hand-held, drone operated)

Isatuximab plus carfilzomib/dexamethasone versus carfilzomib/dexamethasone in patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma: IKEMA Phase III study design

Although the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma has improved dramatically over the past decade, the disease remains incurable; therefore, additional therapies are needed. Novel combination therapies incorporating monoclonal antibodies have shown significant promise. Here we describe the design of a Phase III study (NCT03275285, IKEMA), which is evaluating isatuximab plus carfilzomib and low-dose dexamethasone, versus carfilzomib/dexamethasone in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. The primary end point is progression-free survival. Responses are being determined by an independent review committee using 2016 International Myeloma Working Group criteria, and safety will be assessed throughout. The first patient was recruited in November 2017, and the last patient was recruited in March 2019; 302 patients have been randomized, and the study is ongoing. / Clinical trial registration: NCT0327528

Partial Oxidation of Methanol on Gold: How Selectivity Is Steered by Low-Coordinated Sites

Partial methanol oxidation proceeds with high selectivity to methyl formate (MeFo) on nanoporous gold (npAu) catalysts. As low-coordinated sites on npAu were suggested to affect the selectivity, we experimentally investigated their role in the isothermal selectivity for flat Au(111) and stepped Au(332) model surfaces using a molecular beam approach under well-defined conditions. Direct comparison shows that steps enhance desired MeFo formation and lower undesired overoxidation. DFT calculations reveal differences in oxygen distribution that enhance the barriers to overoxidation at steps. Qualified market access and inter-disciplinarity

This note offers reflections on qualified market access (QMA) the practice of linking trade agreements to values such as human rights, labour standards, or environmental protection. This idea has been suggested by political theorists as a way of fulfilling our duties to the global poor and of making the global economic system more just, and it has influenced a number of concrete policies, such as European Union (EU) trade policies. Yet, in order to assess its merits tout court, different perspectives and disciplines need to be brought together, such as international law, economics, political science, and philosophy. It is also worth reflecting on existing practices, such as those of the EU. This note summarises some insights about QMA by drawing such research together and considers the areas in which further research is needed, whilst reflecting also on the merits of interdisciplinary exchanges on such topics
