Endohedrally confined hydrogen atom with a moving nucleus

We studied the hydrogen atom as a system of two quantum particles in different confinement conditions; a spherical-impenetrable-wall cavity and a fullerene molecule cage. The motion is referred to the center of spherical cavities, and the Schr\"{o}dinger equation solved by means of a Generalized Sturmian Function expansion in spherical coordinates. The solutions present different properties from the ones described by the many models in the literature, where the proton is fixed in space and only the electron is considered as a quantum particle. Our results show that the position of the proton (i.e. the center of mas of the H atom) is very sensitive to the confinement condition, and could vary substantially from one state to another, from being sharply centered to being localized outside the fullerene molecule. Interchange of the localization characteristics between the states when varying the strength of the fullerene cage and mass occurred through crossing phenomena

    Merlin’s magnifying glass

The following is not a prescriptive text, neither a definitive one, though sometimes it might be thought it is the other way around. In any case, this is a reflection or, if you dislike Cartesian terminology, this is a way of arguing about certain worldview. I chose to call it phenomenology, but you might call it what you please; perhaps “Merlin’s magnifying glass”. The important thing is that the chosen term should suggest that what is there feels and, and at the same time, is felt. And that between what is there and us there is not a gap but a sensitive coexistence. I offer three examples of such a sensitive coexistence based on the relation constructed between "it" before "me" and "me" before "it". After all these considerations, instead of stating a clear set of conclusions, I invite you to try a similar approach in the hope that you succeed unlike me.El que sigue no es un texto prescriptivo, aunque a ratos lo parezca; tampoco es terminante, aunque también lo parezca.

An Exploration of Paul Bowles\u27 Piano-Solo Pieces

This research paper provides a general overview of the piano-solo literature by the American composer Paul Frederic Bowles (1910-1999). Thanks to recent contributions, this repertoire is now available in recordings and musical scores as it has never been before.;This paper is divided into two sections. The first covers the biography of Paul Bowles and his musical achievements as a composer, along with his research into the folk music of Morocco and his literary writings as a music critic for the journal Modern Music and for The New Herald Tribune. The second part is about Bowles\u27 piano-solo output, divided thematically into pieces with similar forms and structures.;For Bowles\u27 solo piano music, theoretical analysis and a review of existing literature help to reveal style traits; these include his preference for short character pieces, in which Bowles employs neoclassical elements, such as melodies with classical harmonies that display bitonal and pandiatonal tendencies, along with ostinato patterns and Alberti-bass accompaniments. Bowles\u27 music often displays ternary or free structures, with motivic development techniques through which themes or passages are derived from previous motives. Jazz and folk idioms are also an important aspect of Bowles\u27 piano music, particularly in his dancelike pieces, many of which display a Latin-American flavor

A study of damage accumulation in a knitted fabric reinforced composite.

The use of knitting technology with advanced fibres such as glass, carbon and aramid, to produce near-net-shape fabrics has in recent years received increasing interest from the composite materials community. Knitted fabrics have the potential of being used in engineering structures with complex shapes in conjunction with a suitable liquid moulding technique, such as Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), due to their excellent drapeability and manufacturability. During previous studies in textile reinforced composites, an intimate relationship between the fabric architecture and the damage development has been demonstrated. In this work, the quasi-static tensile loading deformation behaviour and the relation between the fabric architecture and damage development have been studied for a weft knitted glass fabric. Tensile properties have been examined and the failure mechanisms have been identified experimentally by analysing the damage process in-situ with a camera and by studying fracture surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The acoustic emission technique was used to support the microscopic analysis. The work has investigated the tensile properties and failure mechanisms of three knitted fabric reinforced composite laminates reinforced with a Milano weft knitted glass fabric. The three composites were (i) a single layer of fabric reinforcing epoxy resin, (ii) a single knitted fabric layer sandwiched between 0° glass fibre unidirectional plies (again with the glass reinforcing epoxy resin), and (iii) the same knitted glass fabric but this time used as the reinforcement in commercially produced high fibre volume fraction composites (using the RTM technique). The variation of mechanical properties with angle (from wale to course) has been measured for the single layer of the fabric reinforcing epoxy resin by orientating the wale direction of the fabric at different angles. Mechanical properties have been measured for each angular orientation and comparisons were made between them, especially with regard to the planes of final failure. The single layer composites failed as soon as the first damage was initiated. Hence, to investigate damage accumulation, a novel technique was employed to manufacture a sandwich laminate, which consisted in placing a single knitted fabric layer between 0° glass fibre unidirectional plies. The success of this method is that the accumulation of damage in the knitted architecture was allowed to be studied and some characteristics of crack initiation and crack propagation could be related to the fabric geometry and structure. Experiments on these model transparent materials have been complemented by tests on two types of commercial knitted fabric composite manufactured by the RTM process. Characterization of these materials under tensile loading has been carried out for monotonic and cyclic loading and the results have been compared with those found for the single layer and the sandwich model material. Various failure mechanisms such as cracking at loop cross-over points, resin matrix cracking, fibre bundle debonding and tensile fracture of fibre bundles in failed specimens were observed. The behaviour of the commercial RTM specimens has been discussed in the light of the results obtained from the model single layer and sandwich specimens
