    The development of direct payments in the UK: implications for social justice

    Direct payments have been heralded by the disability movement as an important means to achieving independent living and hence greater social justice for disabled people through enhanced recognition as well as financial redistribution. Drawing on data from the ESRC funded project Disabled People and Direct Payments: A UK Comparative Perspective, this paper presents an analysis of policy and official statistics on use of direct payments across the UK. It is argued that the potential of direct payments has only partly been realised as a result of very low and uneven uptake within and between different parts of the UK. This is accounted for in part by resistance from some Labour-controlled local authorities, which regard direct payments as a threat to public sector jobs. In addition, access to direct payments has been uneven across impairment groups. However, from a very low base there has been a rapid expansion in the use of direct payments over the past three years. The extent to which direct payments are able to facilitate the ultimate goal of independent living for disabled people requires careful monitoring

    Rett syndrome (RTT) is a genetic disorder characterized by a range of features including cognitive impairment, gait abnormalities and a reduction in purposeful hand skills. Mice harbouring knockout mutations in the &lt;i&gt;Mecp2&lt;/i&gt; gene display many RTT-like characteristics and are central to efforts to find novel therapies for the disorder. As hand stereotypies and gait abnormalities constitute major diagnostic criteria in RTT, it is clear that motor and gait-related phenotypes will be of importance in assessing preclinical therapeutic outcomes. We therefore aimed to assess gait properties over the prodromal phase in a functional knockout mouse model of RTT. In male &lt;i&gt;Mecp2&lt;/i&gt; knockout mice, we observed alterations in stride, coordination and balance parameters at 4 weeks of age, before the onset of other overt phenotypic changes as revealed by observational scoring. These data suggest that gait measures may be used as a robust and early marker of &lt;i&gt;Mecp2&lt;/i&gt;-dysfunction in future preclinical therapeutic studies

    Application of hydropedological insights in hydrological modelling of the Stevenson-Hamilton Research Supersite, Kruger National Park, South Africa

    Soil information is increasingly sought after for hydrological modelling, as the importance of soil in the hydrological cycle is understood better. In this paper the output of a digital soil mapping exercise was used as the soil input into a distributed hydrological model (ACRU) for a test site within the Stevenson-Hamilton Research Supersite, Kruger National Park (South Africa). The aim was to determine the effect of parameterising a hydrological model with increased levels of soil information, at different scales. To accommodate this aim, ACRU was run in 3 different modes, each with increasing levels of input, on 3 catchments, including a 1st, 2nd and 3rd order catchment. The outputs evaluated included both streamflow and soil water content at selected soil profiles. Simulation accuracy increased with higher levels of soil input, as well as with increasing catchment size. The improved accuracy with increased soil input underscores the value of detailed soil information in modelling, while the improved results with increased catchment size show that the optimal scale for including soil information has not yet been reached.Keywords: ACRU; digital soil mapping; hillslope hydrology; hydropedology; Kruger National Par

    Scaling at the OTOC Wavefront: Integrable versus chaotic models

    Out of time ordered correlators (OTOCs) are useful tools for investigating foundational questions such as thermalization in closed quantum systems because they can potentially distinguish between integrable and nonintegrable dynamics. Here we discuss the properties of wavefronts of OTOCs by focusing on the region around the main wavefront at x=vBtx=v_{B}t, where vBv_{B} is the butterfly velocity. Using a Heisenberg spin model as an example, we find that a propagating Gaussian with the argument −m(x)(x−vBt)2+b(x)t-m(x)\left( x-v_B t \right)^2 +b(x)t gives an excellent fit for both the integrable case and the chaotic case. However, the scaling in these two regimes is very different: in the integrable case the coefficients m(x)m(x) and b(x)b(x) have an inverse power law dependence on xx whereas in the chaotic case they decay exponentially. In fact, the wavefront in the integrable case is a rainbow caustic and catastrophe theory can be invoked to assert that power law scaling holds rigorously in that case. Thus, we conjecture that exponential scaling of the OTOC wavefront is a robust signature of a nonintegrable dynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    A Matrix Element for Chaotic Tunnelling Rates and Scarring Intensities

    It is shown that tunnelling splittings in ergodic double wells and resonant widths in ergodic metastable wells can be approximated as easily-calculated matrix elements involving the wavefunction in the neighbourhood of a certain real orbit. This orbit is a continuation of the complex orbit which crosses the barrier with minimum imaginary action. The matrix element is computed by integrating across the orbit in a surface of section representation, and uses only the wavefunction in the allowed region and the stability properties of the orbit. When the real orbit is periodic, the matrix element is a natural measure of the degree of scarring of the wavefunction. This scarring measure is canonically invariant and independent of the choice of surface of section, within semiclassical error. The result can alternatively be interpretated as the autocorrelation function of the state with respect to a transfer operator which quantises a certain complex surface of section mapping. The formula provides an efficient numerical method to compute tunnelling rates while avoiding the need for the exceedingly precise diagonalisation endemic to numerical tunnelling calculations.Comment: Submitted to Annals of Physics.     Plasticity reveals hidden resistance to extinction under climate change in the global hotspot of salamander diversity

    Extinction rates are predicted to rise exponentially under climate warming, but many of these predictions ignore physiological and behavioral plasticity that might buffer species from extinction. We evaluated the potential for physiological acclimatization and behavioral avoidance of poor climatic conditions to lower extinction risk under climate change in the global hotspot of salamander diversity, a region currently predicted to lose most of the salamander habitat due to warming. Our approach integrated experimental physiology and behavior into a mechanistic species distribution model to predict extinction risk based on an individual’s capacity to maintain energy balance with and without plasticity. We assessed the sensitivity of extinction risk to body size, behavioral strategies, limitations on energy intake, and physiological acclimatization of water loss and metabolic rate. The field and laboratory experiments indicated that salamanders readily acclimatize water loss rates and metabolic rates in ways that could maintain positive energy balance. Projections with plasticity reduced extinction risk by 72% under climate warming, especially in the core of their range. Further analyses revealed that juveniles might experience the greatest physiological stress under climate warming, but we identified specific physiological adaptations or plastic responses that could minimize the lethal physiological stress imposed on juveniles. We conclude that incorporating plasticity fundamentally alters ecological predictions under climate change by reducing extinction risk in the hotspot of salamander diversity

    Adult patients with respiratory syncytial virus infection: impact of solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation on outcomes

    BackgroundRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common community‐acquired pathogen responsible for a substantial disease burden in adults. We investigated the outcomes after RSV infection in hospitalized adults over a 3‐year period.MethodsThis single‐center, retrospective study identified 174 patients hospitalized with RSV upper or lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2012. Clinical data were extracted from medical records. The primary outcome analyzed was all‐cause mortality, defined as death during the index hospital admission. Subjects were divided into 3 groups for comparison: hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients, solid organ transplant (SOT) patients, and non‐transplant patients.ResultsIn our study, 41/174 (23.6%) were HSCT recipients and 28/174 (16.1%) were SOT recipients. Twelve of 174 (6.9%) died. Death occurred in 2/41 (4.9%) HSCT and 3/28 (10.7%) SOT recipients, compared to 7/106 (6.6%) non‐transplant patients. When compared to the non‐transplant cohort, HSCT and SOT were not found to be significant risk factors for mortality (P = 0.685 and 0.645, respectively). In multivariate logistic regression, age >60 was associated with mortality (P = 0.019), while lymphopenia on admission trended toward an association with death (P = 0.054). HSCT patients were less likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit (odds ratio [OR] 0.26, P = 0.04), but were significantly more likely to receive ribavirin therapy (OR 11.62, P 60 or with lymphopenia on admission. This study did not identify any significant increased mortality or morbidity associated with RSV infection in immune suppressed transplant recipients vs. patients who had not received a transplant.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/113135/1/tid12409.pd

    Specific protease activity indicates the degree of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in chronic infected wounds

    Chronic non-healing wounds are a major health problem with resident bacteria strongly implicated in their impaired healing. A rapid-screen to provide detailed knowledge of wound bacterial populations would therefore be of value and help prevent unnecessary and indiscriminate use of antibiotics—a process associated with promoting antibiotic resistance. We analysed chronic wound fluid samples, which had been assessed for microbial content, using 20 different fluorescent labelled peptide substrates to determine whether protease activity correlated with the bacterial load. Eight of the peptide substrates showed significant release of fluorescence after reaction with some of the wound samples. Comparison of wound fluid protease activities with the microbiological data indicated that there was no correlation between bacterial counts and enzyme activity for most of the substrates tested. However, two of the peptide substrates produced a signal corresponding with the microbial data revealing a strong positive correlation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa numbers. This demonstrated that short fluorescent labelled peptides can be used to detect protease activity in chronic wound fluid samples. The finding that two peptides were specific indicators for the presence of P. aeruginosa may be the basis for a diagnostic test to determine wound colonisation by this organism

    A Five-Factor Measure of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Traits.

    The current study provides convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity data for the Five-Factor Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (FFOCI), a newly-developed measure of traits relevant to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) from the perspective of the five-factor model (FFM). Twelve scales were constructed as maladaptive variants of specific FFM facets (e.g., Perfectionism as a maladaptive variant of FFM competence). On the basis of data from 407 undergraduates (oversampled for OCPD symptoms) these 12 scales demonstrated convergent correlations with established measures of OCPD and the FFM. Further, they obtained strong discriminant validity with respect to facets from other FFM domains. Most importantly, the individual scales and total score of the FFOCI obtained incremental validity beyond existing measures of the FFM and OCPD for predicting a composite measure of obsessive-compulsive symptomatology. The findings support the validity of the FFOCI as a measure of obsessive-compulsive personality traits, as well as of maladaptive variants of the FFM
