High power RF solid state power amplifier system
A high power, high frequency, solid state power amplifier system includes a plurality of input multiple port splitters for receiving a high-frequency input and for dividing the input into a plurality of outputs and a plurality of solid state amplifier units. Each amplifier unit includes a plurality of amplifiers, and each amplifier is individually connected to one of the outputs of multiport splitters and produces a corresponding amplified output. A plurality of multiport combiners combine the amplified outputs of the amplifiers of each of the amplifier units to a combined output. Automatic level control protection circuitry protects the amplifiers and maintains a substantial constant amplifier power output

A radio frequency power load and associated method. A radio frequency power load apparatus includes a container and a fluid having an ion source therein, the fluid being contained in the container. Two conductors are immersed in the fluid. A radio frequency transmission system includes a radio frequency transmitter, a radio frequency amplifier connected to the transmitter and a radio frequency power load apparatus connected to the amplifier. The apparatus includes a fluid having an ion source therein, and two conductors immersed in the fluid. A method of dissipating power generated by a radio frequency transmission system includes the steps of: immersing two conductors of a radio frequency power load apparatus in a fluid having an ion source therein; and connecting the apparatus to an amplifier of the transmission system
An integrated ultrasound curriculum (iUSC) for medical students: 4-year experience
A review of the development and implementation of a 4-year medical student integrated ultrasound curriculum is presented. Multiple teaching and assessment modalities are discussed as well as results from testing and student surveys. Lessons learned while establishing the curriculum are summarized. It is concluded that ultrasound is a well received, valuable teaching tool across all 4 years of medical school, and students learn ultrasound well, and they feel their ultrasound experience enhances their medical education
Why organizational and community diversity matter:Representativeness and the Emergence of Incivility and Organizational Performance
Integrating sociological and psychological perspectives, this research considers the value of organizational ethnic diversity as a function of community diversity. Employee and patient surveys, census data, and performance indexes relevant to 142 hospitals in the United Kingdom suggest that intraorganizational ethnic diversity is associated with reduced civility toward patients. However, the degree to which organizational demography was representative of community demography was positively related to civility experienced by patients and ultimately enhanced organizational performance. These findings underscore the understudied effects of community context and imply that intergroup biases manifested in incivility toward out-group members hinder organizational performance
A Novel Workflow with a Customizable 3D Printed Vaginal Template and a Direction Modulated Brachytherapy (DMBT) Tandem Applicator for Adaptive Interstitial Brachytherapy of the Cervix
A novel clinical workflow utilizing a direction modulated brachytherapy (DMBT) tandem applicator in combination with a patient-specific, 3D printed vaginal needle-track template for an advanced image-guided adaptive interstitial brachytherapy of the cervix. The proposed workflow has three main steps: (1) pre-treatment MRI, (2) an initial optimization of the needle positions based on the DMBT tandem positioning and patient anatomy, and a subsequent inverse optimization using the combined DMBT tandem and needles, and (3) rapid 3D printing. We retrospectively re-planned five patient cases for two scenarios; one plan with the DMBT tandem (T) and ovoids (O) with the original needle (ND) positions (DMBT + O + ND) and another with the DMBT T&O and spatially reoptimized needles (OptN) positions (DMBT + O + OptN). All retrospectively reoptimized plans have been compared to the original plan (OP) as well. The accuracy of 3D printing was verified through the image registration between the planning CT and the CT of the 3D-printed template. The average difference in D2cc for the bladder, rectum, and sigmoid between the OPs and DMBT + O + OptNs were −8.03 ± 4.04%, −18.67 ± 5.07%, and −26.53 ± 4.85%, respectively. In addition, these average differences between the DMBT + O + ND and DMBT + O + OptNs were −2.55 ± 1.87%, −10.70 ± 3.45%, and −22.03 ± 6.01%, respectively. The benefits could be significant for the patients in terms of target coverage and normal tissue sparing and increase the optimality over free-hand needle positioning
Magnetized Target Fusion Driven by Plasma Liners
Magnetized target fusion (MTF) attempts to combine the favorable attributes of magnetic confinement fusion (MCF) for energy confinement with the attributes of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) for efficient compression heating and wall-free containment of the fusing plasma. It uses a material liner to compress and contain a magnetized plasma. For practical applications, standoff drivers to deliver the imploding momentum flux to the target plasma remotely are required. Spherically converging plasma jets have been proposed as standoff drivers for this purpose. The concept involves the dynamic formation of a spherical plasma liner by the merging of plasma jets, and the use of the liner so formed to compress a spheromak or a field reversed configuration (FRC). For the successful implementation of the scheme, plasma jets of the requisite momentum flux density need to be produced. Their transport over sufficiently large distances (a few meters) needs to be assured. When they collide and merge into a liner, relative differences in velocity, density and temperature of the jets could give rise to instabilities in the development of the liner. Variation in the jet properties must be controlled to ensure that the growth rate of the instabilities are not significant over the time scale of the liner formation before engaging with the target plasma. On impact with the target plasma, some plasma interpenetration might occur between the liner and the target. The operating parameter space needs to be identified to ensure that a reasonably robust and conducting contact surface is formed between the liner and the target. A mismatch in the "impedance" between the liner and the target plasma could give rise to undesirable shock heating of the liner leading to increased entropy (thermal losses) in the liner. Any irregularities in the liner will accentuate the Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities during the compression of the target plasma by the liner
Deconstructing Subtle Racist Imagery in Television Ads
NoAlthough ads with subtle racist imagery can reinforce negative stereotypes, advertisers can eliminate this problem. After a brief overview of predominantly U.S.-based research on the racial mix of models/actors in ads, a theoretical framework for unmasking subtle racial bias is provided and dimensional qualitative research (DQR) is introduced as a method for identifying and rectifying such ad imagery. Results of a DQR-based study of 622 U.K. television ads with at least one Black actor indicate (1) subtle racially biased imagery now supersedes overt forms, and (2) the most popular ad appeals often mask negative stereotypes. Implications for public policy and advertisers, as well as recommendations for future research, are discussed
