Integrating multiple representations: fighting asthma
This paper seeks to engage debates about integrating pluralisms regarding multiple forms/representations and how they might function smoothly if they are closely aligned. This paper offers, narrative poetry with an artistic impression aimed at seeing how these might interact with each other. Like poetry, visual images are unique and can evoke particular kinds of emotional and visceral responses. By offering narrative poetry together with an artistic representation it is not meant to de-value the importance of either, but it is aimed at seeing how these arts-based methods and creative analytical practices might unite as a narrative to offer knew ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘seeing
Highly sensitive alkane odour sensors based on functionalised gold nanoparticles
We deposit dense, ordered, thin films of Au-dodecanethiol core/shell nanoparticles by the Langmuir-Schafer (LS) printing method, and find that their resistance at ambient temperature responds selectively and sensitively to alkane odours. Response is a rapid resistance increase due to swelling, and is strongest for alkane odours where the alkane chain is similar in length to the dodecane shell. For decane odours, we find a response to concentrations as low as 15 ppm, about 600 times below the lower explosive limit. Response is weaker, but still significant, to aromatic odours (e.g. Toluene, Xylene), while potential interferants such as polar and/or hydrogen-bonding odours (e.g. alcohols, ketones, water vapour) are somewhat rejected. Resistance is weakly dependent on temperature, and recovers rapidly and completely to its original value within the error margin of measurement. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Scale robust IMU-assisted KLT for stereo visual odometry solution
We propose a novel stereo visual IMU-assisted (Inertial Measurement Unit) technique that extends to large inter-frame motion the use of KLT tracker (Kanade–Lucas–Tomasi). The constrained and coherent inter-frame motion acquired from the IMU is applied to detected features through homogenous transform using 3D geometry and stereoscopy properties. This predicts efficiently the projection of the optical flow in subsequent images. Accurate adaptive tracking windows limit tracking areas resulting in a minimum of lost features and also prevent tracking of dynamic objects. This new feature tracking approach is adopted as part of a fast and robust visual odometry algorithm based on double dogleg trust region method. Comparisons with gyro-aided KLT and variants approaches show that our technique is able to maintain minimum loss of features and low computational cost even on image sequences presenting important scale change. Visual odometry solution based on this IMU-assisted KLT gives more accurate result than INS/GPS solution for trajectory generation in certain context
New Evidence of Discrete Scale Invariance in the Energy Dissipation of Three-Dimensional Turbulence: Correlation Approach and Direct Spectral Detection
We extend the analysis of [Zhou and Sornette, Physica D 165, 94-125, 2002]
showing statistically significant log-periodic corrections to scaling in the
moments of the energy dissipation rate in experiments at high Reynolds number
() of three-dimensional fully developed turbulence. First, we
develop a simple variant of the canonical averaging method using a rephasing
scheme between different samples based on pairwise correlations that confirms
Zhou and Sornette's previous results. The second analysis uses a simpler local
spectral approach and then performs averages over many local spectra. This
yields stronger evidence of the existence of underlying log-periodic
undulations, with the detection of more than 20 harmonics of a fundamental
logarithmic frequency corresponding to the preferred

On the exactly solvable pairing models for bosons
We propose the new exactly solvable model for bosons corresponding to the
attractive pairing interaction. Using the electrostatic analogy, the solution
of this model in thermodynamic limit is found. The transition from the
superfluid phase with the Bose condensate and the Bogoliubov - type spectrum of
excitations in the weak coupling regime to the incompressible phase with the
gap in the excitation spectrum in the strong coupling regime is observed.Comment: 19 page

Emissive (10.5 to 12.5 microns) and reflective (0.55 to 1.1 microns) data for ten day scenes and infrared data for six night scenes of southern Texas were analyzed for plant cover, soil temperature, freeze, water stress, and evapotranspiration.
