    A study of the configurational properties of high polymers in solution and in bulk

    The polymerisation of the cyclic ethers oxacyclobutane and tetrahydrofuran to poly(trimethylene oxide) and poly(tetramethylene oxide) has been achieved using p-chlorophenyldiazonium hexafluorophosphate catalyst. Their unperturbed dimensions and dipole moments have been investigated. Single theta solvents, cyclohexane at 25.0°C for poly(trimethylene oxide) and 1-hexene at 44.8°C for poly(tetramethylene oxide) were found, and from viscometry and light scattering the unperturbed dimensions of the two polymers were determined. As an alternative, unperturbed dimensions for poly(trimethylene oxide), from intrinsic viscosities in non-ideal solvents, using the Stockmayer–Fixman and Kurata–Stockmayer extrapolation techniques, were obtained.     AbstractIn a double-blind, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial, 340 asthmatic patients aged 12–70 years received budesonide 400 ÎŒg once daily in the morning, budesonide 400 ÎŒg once daily in the evening, budesonide 200 ÎŒg twice daily or placebo, for 12 weeks in addition to inhaled short-acting ÎČ2-agonists used as required (p.r.n.). Budesonide was given as Pulmicort Turbohaler.Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) increased by 20 to 30 1 min−1 in each of the active treatment groups, significantly more than in the placebo group (P<0·01). There were no significant differences between the active treatment groups. Symptom improvement and decreased ÎČ2-agonist use reflected the PEFR data. Incidences of adverse events in the active treatment groups were similar to those observed in the placebo group.Budesonide 400 ÎŒg given once daily morning or evening is equieffective with the same total daily dose given twice daily in the treatment of mild to moderate stable asthmatics

    Determinants of migrant career success: A study of recent skilled migrants in Australia

    Australia has been aggressively pursuing skilled migrants to sustain its population and foster economic growth. However, many skilled migrants experience a downward career move upon migration to Australia. Based on a survey of recent skilled migrants, this study investigates how individual (age, years of settlement, qualifications), national/societal (citizenship and settlement), and organization‐level (climate of inclusion) factors influence their career success. Overall, we found that: (1) age at migration matters more than length of settlement in predicting skilled migrant career success; (2) citizenship uptake and living in a neighbourhood with a greater number of families from the same country of origin facilitate post‐migration career success; and (3) perceptions of one\u27s social/informal networks in the workplace – a dimension of perceived organizational climate of inclusion – also have a positive impact on migrant career outcomes

    Spin Measurements in Cascade Decays at the LHC

    We systematically study the possibility of determining the spin of new particles after their discovery at the LHC. We concentrate on angular correlations in cascade decays. Motivated by constraints of electroweak precision tests and the potential of providing a Cold Dark Matter candidate, we focus on scenarios of new physics in which some discrete symmetry guarantees the existence of stable neutral particles which escape the detector. More specifically, we compare supersymmetry with another generic scenario in which new physics particles have the same spin as their Standard Model partners. A survey of possibilities of observing spin correlations in a broad range of decay channels is carried out, with interesting ones identified. Rather than confining ourselves to one "collider friendly" benchmark point (such as SPS1a), we describe the parameter region in which any particular decay channel is effective. We conduct a more detailed study of chargino's spin determination in the decay channel q~→q+C~±→q+W±+LSP\tilde{q}\to q + \tilde{C}^\pm \to q + W^\pm + LSP. A scan over the chargino and neutralino masses is performed. We find that as long as the spectrum is not too degenerate the prospects for spin determination in this channel are rather good.Comment: 36 pages, references added, 1 figure modifie

    Measurement of the Gluino Mass via Cascade Decays for SPS 1a

    If R-parity conserving supersymmetry is realised with masses below the TeV scale, sparticles will be produced and decay in cascades at the LHC. In the case of a neutral LSP, which will not be detected, decay chains cannot be fully reconstructed, complicating the mass determination of the new particles. In this paper we extend the method of obtaining masses from kinematical endpoints to include a gluino at the head of a five-sparticle decay chain. This represents a non-trivial extension of the corresponding method for the squark decay chain. We calculate the endpoints of the new distributions and assess their applicability by examining the theoretical distributions for a variety of mass scenarios. The precision with which the gluino mass can be determined by this method is investigated for the mSUGRA point SPS 1a. Finally we estimate the improvement obtained from adding a Linear Collider measurement of the LSP mass.Comment: 40 pages; extended discussion of error

The lightest supersymmetric particle will escape the detectors, thereby complicating the full reconstruction of the decay chains. In this paper we expand on existing methods for determining the masses of the particles in the cascade from endpoints of kinematical distributions. We perform scans in the mSUGRA parameter space to delimit the region where this method is applicable. From the examination of theoretical distributions for a wide selection of mass scenarios it is found that caution must be exerted when equating the theoretical endpoints with the experimentally obtainable ones. We provide analytic formulae for the masses in terms of the endpoints most readily available. Complications due to the composite nature of the endpoint expressions are discussed in relation to the detailed analysis of two points on the SPS 1a line. Finally we demonstrate how a Linear Collider measurement can improve dramatically on the precision of the masses obtained

    On-chip hybrid superconducting-semiconducting quantum circuit

    In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a hybrid superconducting-semiconducting circuit consisting of eight planar and ballistic Nb-In 0.75 Ga 0.25 As-Nb Josephson junctions. E-beam lithography was used to fabricate the Josephson junctions on an InGaAs chip. In contrast to our previous studies on long junctions that were fabricated by photolithography, in this study, we observe the induced superconductivity in an In 0.75 Ga 0.25 As quantum well at higher temperatures, between T = 0.3 and 1 K ( 3 He cryostat temperature range). The induced superconducting gap of Δ ind = 0.65 meV was measured at lowest base temperature T = 300 mK. The effect of temperature and magnetic fields B on the induced superconductivity are presented. Our results suggest that our In 0.75 Ga 0.25 As heterostructure is a promising scalable material system for quantum processing and computing applications

    Moderate drinking before the unit: medicine and life assurance in Britain and the US c.1860–1930

    This article describes the way in which “Anstie’s Limit” – a particular definition of moderate drinking first defined in Britain in the 1860s by the physician Francis Edmund Anstie (1833–1874) – became established as a useful measure of moderate alcohol consumption. Becoming fairly well-established in mainstream Anglophone medicine by 1900, it was also communicated to the public in Britain, North America and New Zealand through newspaper reports. However, the limit also travelled to less familiar places, including life assurance offices, where a number of different strategies for separating moderate from excessive drinkers emerged from the dialogue between medicine and life assurance. Whilst these ideas of moderation seem to have disappeared into the background for much of the twentieth century, re-emerging as the “J-shaped” curve, these early developments anticipate many of the questions surrounding uses of the “unit” to quantify moderate alcohol consumption in Britain today. The article will therefore conclude by exploring some of the lessons of this story for contemporary discussions of moderation, suggesting that we should pay more attention to whether these metrics work, where they work and why

    Expansions of algebras and superalgebras and some applications

    After reviewing the three well-known methods to obtain Lie algebras and superalgebras from given ones, namely, contractions, deformations and extensions, we describe a fourth method recently introduced, the expansion of Lie (super)algebras. Expanded (super)algebras have, in general, larger dimensions than the original algebra, but also include the Inonu-Wigner and generalized IW contractions as a particular case.     EML4-ALK V3 oncogenic fusion proteins promote microtubule stabilization and accelerated migration through NEK9 and NEK7

    EML4-ALK is an oncogenic fusion present in ∌5% non-small cell lung cancers. However, alternative breakpoints in the EML4 gene lead to distinct variants with different patient outcomes. Here, we show in cell models that EML4-ALK variant 3 (V3), which is linked to accelerated metastatic spread, causes microtubule stabilization, formation of extended cytoplasmic protrusions and increased cell migration. It also recruits the NEK9 and NEK7 kinase to microtubules via the N-terminal EML4 microtubule-binding region. Overexpression of wild-type EML4 as well as constitutive activation of NEK9 also perturb cell morphology and accelerate migration in a microtubule-dependent manner that requires the downstream kinase NEK7 but not ALK activity. Strikingly, elevated NEK9 expression is associated with reduced progression-free survival in EML4-ALK patients. Hence, we propose that EML4-ALK V3 promotes microtubule stabilization through NEK9 and NEK7 leading to increased cell migration. This represents a novel actionable pathway that could drive metastatic disease progression in EML4-ALK lung cancer
