    Modal Analysis of a Two-Parachute System

    The Orion capsule is designed to land under a nominal configuration of three main parachutes; however, the system is required to be fault tolerant and land successfully if one of the main parachutes fails to open. The Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) Team performed a series of drop tests in order to characterize the performance of the system with two main parachutes. During the series of drop tests, several distinct dynamical modes were observed. The most consequential of these is the pendulum mode. Three other modes are benign: flyout (scissors), maypole, and breathing. The actual multi-body system is nonlinear, flexible, and possesses significant cross-coupling. Rather than perform analysis of this highly complex system directly, we conduct analysis of each dynamical mode observed during flight, based on first principles. This approach is analogous to traditional aircraft flight dynamics analysis in which the full nonlinear behavior of the airframe is decomposed into longitudinal dynamics (phugoid and short-period modes) and lateral dynamics (spiral, roll-subsidence, and dutch-roll modes). This analysis is intended to supplement multi-body nonlinear simulations in order to provide further insight into the system

    Linear Analysis of a Two-Parachute System Undergoing Pendulum Motion

    Motion resembling that of a pendulum undergoing large-amplitude oscillation was ob- served during a series of flight tests of an unoccupied Orion Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) drop-test vehicle. Large excursions away from vertical by the capsule could cause it to strike the ground or ocean at a large angle with respect to vertical, with an undesirable attitude with respect to heading, or with a large horizontal or vertical speed. These conditions are to be avoided because they would endanger the occupants of the capsule in an actual mission. Pendulum motion is intimately related to a parachutes aerodynamic normal force coefficient, which is a nonlinear function of angle of attack. An analytical investigation of the dynamics of pendulum motion is undertaken with the aid of a simplified model of the physical system and the assumption that the normal force coefficient is a linear function of angle of attack in the neighborhood of a value corresponding to stable equilibrium. The analysis leads to a simple relationship for the location of a pivot point, which provides insights that are consistent with previous studies

    School Based Mental Health Promotion: Nursing Interventions for Depressive Symptoms in Rural Adolescents

    Integrating health education and health promotion into practice is routinely done by nurses. According to a national survey, the need for mental health services has increased in over two thirds of school districts. This article describes the screening of 193 adolescents in Rural Western Pennsylvania’s 9th, 10th, and 11th graders for depressive symptoms. Ten percent (N=19) of students had depressive symptoms, the majority of which were female. These students were interviewed by the research team. The outcome themes and referrals are reported as well as the discussion of implications for nurses in screening for depression and health promotion

    Ares-I-X Stability and Control Flight Test: Analysis and Plans

    The flight test of the Ares I-X vehicle provides a unique opportunity to reduce risk of the design of the Ares I vehicle and test out design, math modeling, and analysis methods. One of the key features of the Ares I design is the significant static aerodynamic instability coupled with the relatively flexible vehicle - potentially resulting in a challenging controls problem to provide adequate flight path performance while also providing adequate structural mode damping and preventing adverse control coupling to the flexible structural modes. Another challenge is to obtain enough data from the single flight to be able to conduct analysis showing the effectiveness of the controls solutions and have data to inform design decisions for Ares I. This paper will outline the modeling approaches and control system design to conduct this flight test, and also the system identification techniques developed to extract key information such as control system performance (gain/phase margins, for example), structural dynamics responses, and aerodynamic model estimations

    Possibilities for pedagogy in Further Education: Harnessing the abundance of literacy

    In this report, it is argued that the most salient factor in the contemporary communicative landscape is the sheer abundance and diversity of possibilities for literacy, and that the extent and nature of students' communicative resources is a central issue in education. The text outlines the conceptual underpinnings of the Literacies for Learning in Further Education project in a social view of literacy, and the associated research design, methodology and analytical framework. It elaborates on the notion of the abundance of literacies in students' everyday lives, and on the potential for harnessing these as resources for the enhancement of learning. It provides case studies of changes in practice that have been undertaken by further education staff in order to draw upon students' everyday literacy practices on Travel and Tourism and Multimedia courses. It ends with some of the broad implications for conceptualising learning that arise from researching through the lens of literacy practices

    Detection, Identification, Location, and Remote Sensing Using SAW RFID Sensor Tags

    The Electromagnetic Systems Branch (EV4) of the Avionic Systems Division at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX is studying the utility of surface acoustic wave (SAW) radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags for multiple wireless applications including detection, identification, tracking, and remote sensing of objects on the lunar surface, monitoring of environmental test facilities, structural shape and health monitoring, and nondestructive test and evaluation of assets. For all of these applications, it is anticipated that the system utilized to interrogate the SAW RFID tags may need to operate at fairly long range and in the presence of considerable multipath and multiple-access interference. Towards that end, EV4 is developing a prototype SAW RFID wireless interrogation system for use in such environments called the Passive Adaptive RFID Sensor Equipment (PARSED) system. The system utilizes a digitally beam-formed planar receiving antenna array to extend range and provide direction-of-arrival information coupled with an approximate maximum-likelihood signal processing algorithm to provide near-optimal estimation of both range and temperature. The system is capable of forming a large number of beams within the field of view and resolving the information from several tags within each beam. The combination of both spatial and waveform discrimination provides the capability to track and monitor telemetry from a large number of objects appearing simultaneously within the field of view of the receiving array. In this paper, we will consider the application of the PARSEQ system to the problem of simultaneous detection, identification, localization, and temperature estimation for multiple objects. We will summarize the overall design of the PARSEQ system and present a detailed description of the design and performance of the signal detection and estimation algorithms incorporated in the system. The system is currently configured only to measure temperature (jointly with range and tag ID), but future versions will be revised to measure parameters other than temperature as SAW tags capable of interfacing with external sensors become available. It is anticipated that the estimation of arbitrary parameters measured using SAW-based sensors will be based on techniques very similar to the joint range and temperature estimation techniques described in this paper

    Walking the walk: a phenomenological study of long distance walking

    Evidence suggests that regular walking can elicit significant psychological benefits although little evidence exists concerning long distance walking. The purpose of this study was to provide detailed accounts of the experiences of long distance walkers. Phenomenological interviews were conducted with six long distance walkers. Data were transcribed verbatim before researchers independently analyzed the transcripts. Participants reported a cumulative effect with positive feelings increasing throughout the duration of the walk. Long distance walking elicited positive emotions, reduced the effects of life-stress, and promoted an increased sense of well-being and personal growth. Results are aligned to theories and concepts from positive psychology

    The literacy practices for assessment in the vocational curriculum - the case of Hospitality

    This article explores two case studies of the literacy practices of assessment in the vocational curriculum. Previous studies have identified learning in the vocational curriculum as being assessment-driven and that subjects often associated with limited levels of literacy actually require multiple literacy practices from students. Drawing upon studies of the literacy practices of assessment in the teaching of Hospitality, the study explores the academic and occupational forms of reading and writing required of students. These literacy practices are often invisible to both students and staff and yet are central to the success of students in relation to attainment. The article suggests that vocational subjects may actually be more demanding in the range of literacies required for assessment than is often considered to be the case
