    Phenomenology of the Baryon Resonance 70-plet at Large N_c

    We examine the multiplet structure and decay channels of baryon resonances in the large N_c QCD generalization of the N_c = 3 SU(6) spin-flavor 70. We show that this ``70'', while a construct of large N_c quark models, actually consists of five model-independent irreducible spin-flavor multiplets in the large N_c limit. The preferred decay modes for these resonances fundamentally depend upon which of the five multiplets to which the resonance belongs. For example, there exists an SU(3) ``8'' of resonances that is eta-philic and pi-phobic, and an ``8'' that is the reverse. Moreover, resonances with a strong SU(3) ``1'' component prefer to decay via a K-bar rather than via a pi. Remarkably, available data appears to bear out these conclusions.Comment: 26 pages, ReVTe

    Silent ischemia: Evaluation by exercise and redistribution tomographic thallium-201 myocardial imaging

    AbstractTo compare the amount of myocardium jeopardized during silent ischemia and painful ischemia, 112 consecutive patients undergoing coronary arteriography with ischemia demonstrated by exercise and redistribution tomographic thallium-201 myocardial imaging (SPECT) were divided into two groups: 84 patients without anginal pain (silent ischemia) and 28 with pain (painful ischemia). The SPECT apical, mid and basal ventricular levels of the short-axis view and the apical portion of the long-axis view were divided into 20 segments.The results were 1) 7.4 ± 4.7 ischemic segments in silent ischemia and 7.6 ± 3.7 in painful ischemia (p = NS) with 4.7 ± 3.6 segments in silent ischemia undergoing total redistribution compared with 5.4 ± 3.4 in painful ischemia (p = NS); 2) no difference in the incidence of single, double or triple vessel disease between silent and painful ischemic groups; 3) similar anatomic distribution of ischemic segments between the two groups; 4) more positive exercise electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in painful ischemia (70%) than in silent ischemia (32%) (p < 0.001) with equal amounts of ischemia associated with positive and negative exercise ECG findings.Conclusions: 1) Patients with silent and painful ischemia during exercise have similar amounts of ischemic myocardium demonstrated by tomographic thallium-201 imaging and similar extent of angiographically documented coronary artery disease despite the absence of pain and the lower incidence of positive exercise ECG findings in silent ischemia. 2) Positive and negative exercise ECG findings were associated with similar amounts of ischemic myocardium

    Mutation and association analysis of the PVR and PVRL2 genes in patients with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate

    Orofacial clefts (OFC; MIM 119530) are among the most common major birth defects. Here, we carried out mutation screening of the PVR and PVRL2 genes, which are both located at an OFC linkage region at 19q13 (OFC3) and are closely related to PVRL1, which has been associated with both syndromic and non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (nsCLP). We screened a total of 73 nsCLP patients and 105 non-cleft controls from the USA for variants in PVR and PVRL2, including all exons and encompassing all isoforms. We identified four variants in PVR and five in PVRL2. One non-synonymous PVR variant, A67T, was more frequent among nsCLP patients than among normal controls, but this difference did not achieve statistical significance

    Este trabalho é uma simulação econômica de operações pecuárias em grande escala na Bacia Amazônica, as quais receberam linhas de crédito subsidiado e incentivos fiscais de vários tipos. Nosso estudo analisa a lucratividade de operações de bovinocultura sob quatro tecnologias de produção, sob preços variáveis de insumos e produtos e a diferentes taxas de valorização da terra. O desenvolvimento da infra-estrutura e o comprometimento do governo brasileiro em integrar a regiao à economia nacional produziu uma alta generalizada nos preços das terras, contribuindo para uma dinâmica especulativa que caracterizou os mercados de terra brasileiros ao longo dos últimos vinte anos.Este estudo demonstra haver muitas condições sob as quais o investimento em pecuária na Amazônia pode ser lucrativa, embora a maioria dos cenários envolva sobrepastejo, subsídios, preços altos para o gado e baixos para os insumos, valorização da terra ou ainda combinações de todas essas condições. O que mais se destaca na simulação é o fato de o sobrepastejo ser a mais lucrativa estratégia de produção na maior parte dos cenários considerados, em virtude do rápido declínio da produtividade das pastagens na Amazônia. Estes resultados tern duas importantes implicações: primeira, que a pecuaria pode expandir-se e ser lucrativa mesmo sem subsídios, sob certos preços do produto e/ou através de uma estrat´égia de contínuo desflorestamento e sobrepastejo: segunda, que a lucratividade do investimento é aumentada em meio a contextos de maior utilização de insumos e maior produção, marcados pela presença de subsídios e/ou valorização da terra.This study is an economic simulation of large scale livestock operations in the Amazon Basin which recieved subsidized credit lines and fiscal incentives of various types. Our study analyses the profitability of livestock operations under four production technologies, under varying input and product prices, and at different rates of land appreciation. Infrastructure development, and the commitment of the Brazilian government to integrate the region into the national economy produced a generalized boom in land prices which contributed to a speculative dynamic in Brazilian land markets that has continued for the last twenty years. This study shows that there are many conditions where investment in livestock [n the Amazon can be profitable, but most of these scenarios imply either overgrazing, subsidies, conditions of high cattle prices and low input prices, land appreciation or combinations of all of these. What is most salient in the simulation is that overgrazing is the most profitable production strategy under most pricing scenarios given the rapid decline of pasture productivity in Amazonia. These results have two important implications: first, livestock activities can expand and be profitable even without subsidies under certain product prices and/or through a strategy of continued clearing and overgrazing. Second, profitability of investment is increased across more input and product contexts with subsidies and/or land appreciation

    Interference effects in interacting quantum dots

    In this paper we study the interplay between interference effects in quantum dots (manifested through the appearance of Fano resonances in the conductance), and interactions taken into account in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. In the non-interacting case we find that interference may lead to the observation of more than one conductance peak per dot level as a function of an applied gate voltage. This may explain recent experimental findings, which were thought to be caused by interaction effects. For the interacting case we find a wide variety of different interesting phenomena. These include both monotonous and non-monotonous filling of the dot levels as a function of an applied gate voltage, which may occur continuously or even discontinuously. In many cases a combination of the different effects can occur in the same sample. The behavior of the population influences, in turn, the conductance lineshape, causing broadening and asymmetry of narrow peaks, and determining whether there will be a zero transmission point. We elucidate the essential role of the interference between the dot levels in determining these outcomes.     Deformability of Tumor Cells versus Blood Cells

    The potential for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) to elucidate the process of cancer metastasis and inform clinical decision-making has made their isolation of great importance. However, CTCs are rare in the blood, and universal properties with which to identify them remain elusive. As technological advancements have made single-cell deformability measurements increasingly routine, the assessment of physical distinctions between tumor cells and blood cells may provide insight into the feasibility of deformability-based methods for identifying CTCs in patient blood. To this end, we present an initial study assessing deformability differences between tumor cells and blood cells, indicated by the length of time required for them to pass through a microfluidic constriction. Here, we demonstrate that deformability changes in tumor cells that have undergone phenotypic shifts are small compared to differences between tumor cell lines and blood cells. Additionally, in a syngeneic mouse tumor model, cells that are able to exit a tumor and enter circulation are not required to be more deformable than the cells that were first injected into the mouse. However, a limited study of metastatic prostate cancer patients provides evidence that some CTCs may be more mechanically similar to blood cells than to typical tumor cell lines.Janssen Pharmaceutical Ltd.National Cancer Institute (U.S.).     Acoustic Analog to Quantum Mechanical Level Splitting

    A simple physical system is discussed that mirrors the quantum mechanical infinite square well with a central delta well potential. The physical realization consists of a continuous sound wave traveling in a pair of tubes separated by an adjustable diaphragm. The equivalence between the quantum system and the acoustic system is explored. The analytic solution to the quantum system exhibits level splitting as does the acoustic system

    Gene identification and analysis of transcripts differentially regulated in fracture healing by EST sequencing in the domestic sheep

    BACKGROUND: The sheep is an important model animal for testing novel fracture treatments and other medical applications. Despite these medical uses and the well known economic and cultural importance of the sheep, relatively little research has been performed into sheep genetics, and DNA sequences are available for only a small number of sheep genes. RESULTS: In this work we have sequenced over 47 thousand expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from libraries developed from healing bone in a sheep model of fracture healing. These ESTs were clustered with the previously available 10 thousand sheep ESTs to a total of 19087 contigs with an average length of 603 nucleotides. We used the newly identified sequences to develop RT-PCR assays for 78 sheep genes and measured differential expression during the course of fracture healing between days 7 and 42 postfracture. All genes showed significant shifts at one or more time points. 23 of the genes were differentially expressed between postfracture days 7 and 10, which could reflect an important role for these genes for the initiation of osteogenesis. CONCLUSION: The sequences we have identified in this work are a valuable resource for future studies on musculoskeletal healing and regeneration using sheep and represent an important head-start for genomic sequencing projects for Ovis aries, with partial or complete sequences being made available for over 5,800 previously unsequenced sheep genes

    Development of Level 1b Calibration and Validation Readiness, Implementation and Management Plans for GOES-R

    A complement of Readiness, Implementation and Management Plans (RIMPs) to facilitate management of post-launch product test activities for the official Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) Level 1b (L1b) products have been developed and documented. Separate plans have been created for each of the GOES-R sensors including: the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), the Extreme ultraviolet and X-ray Irradiance Sensors (EXIS), Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), GOES-R Magnetometer (MAG), the Space Environment In-Situ Suite (SEISS), and the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI). The GOES-R program has implemented these RIMPs in order to address the full scope of CalVal activities required for a successful demonstration of GOES-R L1b data product quality throughout the three validation stages: Beta, Provisional and Full Validation. For each product maturity level, the RIMPs include specific performance criteria and required artifacts that provide evidence a given validation stage has been reached, the timing when each stage will be complete, a description of every applicable Post-Launch Product Test (PLPT), roles and responsibilities of personnel, upstream dependencies, and analysis methods and tools to be employed during validation. Instrument level Post-Launch Tests (PLTs) are also referenced and apply primarily to functional check-out of the instruments
